Dressing gowns are a godsend in cold weather honestly. Even the cheapest ones are generally made of the same fleecy polyester material most blankets are made of except are much, much more convenient to wear all the time, and can go over everything once you're indoors.

Just lol at how poo poo the media is in this country where “government aide walks into hand of random passerby pointing towards nearest bus stop” becomes “labour anarchist bussed in via taxis on taxpayer money brutally assaults conservative advisor to health secretary and smashes his face during riot outside hospital” without literally any repercussions or apologies. Genuinely I don’t think labour is going to win, at best, there will be a hung parliament and Johnson will become a laughing stock for pissing away a 15 pt lead, and a few key tories will lose their seats due to tactical voting.

Tory voters, being generally pensioners, are less likely to vote if there is a high turnout - they see a gang of youths hanging around and get scared and call the police, assuming they're about to get turbomugged and murdered rather than just queing for the polling station.

Re midlands:

Thatcher hosed the midlands hardest of any of the industrial towns, repeatedly and brutally. Then the Tories blamed the EU for loving the midlands. Then the midlands voted to leave the EU quite heavily because the EU spawned thatcher and her policies, according to the tories. Then the Tories won the midlands because only they could stop the EU from keeping going with EU Thatchers tory policies from the EU which were loving the midlands, via Thatcher.

also, racism. Midlands is full of racists.

Jo Swinson is a piece of poo poo and I'd be interested to see how many seats labour loses for the sole reason she split the vote with her propaganda resulting in some ridiculous "conservative win seat with 31% of the vote to labours 29 and lib dems 20% shenanigans"

well it also helped that finally, finally after 18 years in the wilderness, labour got back in, and then spent 13 years not helping the midlands at all and telling them that nothing could be done about the hollowing-out and it was their own fault for not adjusting to the new economy.

I mean yea, I dunno if you noticed but new labour wasn't socialist except in the sense they thought maybe letting the poors starve to death was bad for buisness. They were neoliberals through and through and that's the problem.

Labour lost its northern seats, it's been losing them for decades, because fundamentally the centrist approach is to simply manage capitalism. It can't consider saying "no, we won't let these places decline just because they're no longer maximally economically viable on the global market"

It does not offer us a solution to our problem because our problem is with capitalism, that is the force that is taking away our homes, our jobs, our lives. You can't paper over that forever.

Blair may have won on hope of being something new, but what he was, was simply more of the same.

Yep same thing is happening in the midlands. Telling people “were sorry you lost your jobs due to factory closures but have you considered laissaire fairez capitalism means this is a good thing? Anyway, here’s your monthly condolences check, better luck next time.” Is exactly what Blair and co were doing and what the tories are likely to continue doing now. The guy saying “labour has done nothing for us in decades was imo, right.

re fox hunting from a few pages back: rich wankers think it's fine because they believe it's the only way to stop foxes breeding by disrupting their breeding sites. Even though things like lamplighting or traps are perfectly fine and legal (and just straight up shooting them on sight), rich assholes will claim this only "reduces the population" be leaves the breeding sites and fox den mothers intact.

It still reeks of bullshit but at the same time, that's their logic.

One thing to consider is that the Tories might not actually realize how big an issue this is. Like, these are the people surprised that a lot of imports come in through ports, why would you expect them to know that insulin isn't produced in the UK? A lot of them probably think a can-do attitude and a little derring-do will solve every logistical challenge, and those are the pessimists who even recognize that there might be challenges. The ones who actually do see the challenges for what they are probably see them as an opportunity to make a lot of money, so they're not even gonna try solving the problem in a way that serves society.

Even better: most insulin comes from GMO sources now, so it's likely the UK is way behind on anything we'd need to source it locally becuase of the UK's historical resistance to genetically modified stuff. Why would you happen to have special fermentation tanks to develop genetically modified yeasts just lying around if you're essentially banned from using them thanks to legislation, for instance? Why would you keep stocks of genetically modified yeasts or bacteria at all, in fact?
