Hi everyone, North American lurker here. I started watching UK politics as a kind of passive hobby after the 2017 election because :laffo:, but also because I believe that effective left-leaning politics should look outside of one's borders to how other polities operate. I decided to keep a tab on the UKMT in an effort to understand British parliamentary protocol and procedure through a socialist lens.

Well, by chance this upcoming election falls not only a couple days after my birthday, but also during finals week at my university. Taken together with the 6ish hour time delay, I'm looking forward to drinking and watching the results roll in.

Like most of you I think Labour has a great chance at bringing in an actual left-leaning UK government. If so, I hope my idiot country follows suit 11 months from now.

Good luck, and remember that hope is not a lie!

The first run of Futurama was perfect. I watch the X-mas episodes every year in December as is tradition, like decorating palm trees and jolly-seeking missiles.

Perfectly happy that Ridley is having to confront her privilege, but the framing of the tweet is weird. “This is what happens when you challenge someone in an interview and not defer to their press release” and it’s not a politician, it’s an actress in a kid’s movie who was bullied off of social media.

Here's what I can't figure out: the data I saw say that 16 million registered voters stayed home? Is this accurate, and if so what the hell happened to trigger that?

So what should have Labour done differently?

I think that Brexit is a political Singularity. It seems to foul up the calculus for any political entity that has actual principles other than "rape, pillage, and no brown folk."

Id bet that particular person is full of poo poo and did nothing, kinda like all how every 70 year old in the US was in total solidarity with the hippy movement and never was pro-war despite it having massive support of that total age bracket.

Ultimately, ordinary people don't like to be told that their ingrained bigotry is not harmless, and when they have marginalized people telling them that what they are saying and doing is hurtful, they take offense, and get standoffish. It keeps coming up and starts to be several things, and suddenly they are perceiving it as an attack on themselves. Its stupid and short sighted but this cycle has genuinely been a huge source of brain worms for a shockingly large amount of people. I don't think it helps anything at all when you have lots of these communities blaming everything on the straight white male demographic, or just white people in general. At that point, people get extremely standoffish and accusations of reverse racism start to fly. Suddenly, the people fighting the Fascists are the bad guy, and these idiots start identifying with the fascists rather than the marginalized.

Its loving stupid but I think that its fair to say that the angrier factions in the left have genuinely done some real harm in causing people who already have some of these tendencies to slip down the slope towards right wing radicalization. There is more too it of course, I personally feel that Facebook and Youtube have a huge amount to answer for, but this election result (and things like Trump getting the presidency) have only served to embolden the right even further. I really really hate to say it but a lot of vulnerable people are going to have to be prepared to numb themselves to a fresh wave of emboldened bigots and start playing the long game rather than trying to push through societal change yesterday.

gently caress 'em, if calling people out on their bigotry makes them MORE bigoted then they're fash collaborators and need a stompin'.

Just told my friendship group back in the UK to gently caress off, basically. Bunch of comfortable liberals who're treating all this as a game. One of them called me "trumpian" when I said that media bias against Corbyn/Labour was a major issue - has he loving seen a) The media, and b) Boris Johnson?

They were all loving screaming about how Corbyn has to come out for a 2nd ref NOW NOW NOW for months, and now they're sharing Jonathan Pie videos where he says that "ignoring leave voters and calling them all stupid isn't gonna make them vote for Corbyn!".

Like, gently caress.

gently caress those guys. Does mean I don't really have any friends left in the UK now but at this point I don't care.
