I think you can help people manage this by simply allowing max 4 visitors at private dwellings, but people are such piss takers that I reckon any easing will be taken as the green light for whatever you want to do.

Like the other thing is they want to go shopping or spend money or horseshit because they think that's mental health.

Comstar, whats your take on relaxing restrictions?

Back to work for everyone in 2 weeks (not including NSW I think). Large gatherings of more than 100 people are still banned (sports events with the public are a big NO). If anyone has a hint of sickness, they get sent home and tested. Work pays for this with a special sick leave. No international travel allowed for a month, and then only to NZ and other pacific islands that are clear. Anyone coming from other places goes into 2 week isolation. The homeless get somewhere to stay so they don't go under the radar. NO CRUISE SHIPS ALLOWED.

Also, 90% tax on billionaires.

I've been talking with my girlfriend about camping locally once restrictions lift, but a friend of hers pointed out that 44 million Germans travelled abroad for holidays in 2019, so if they're all stuck domestically and camping is basically all that's available to them.. whereas in Australia there would probably be a mich higher supply/demand imbalance

For a week or so there, we were doubling every 3 days and going to pass Italy in 2 weeks. Remember when the LNP was offering to give bank loans to small business and that was it? It took about 2 weeks for someone to get in contact with them that MAYBE this was going to be a tad bigger than they thought.

I suspect it was the point where Dutton got it they they noticed it could happen to them personally and may in fact end in riots if they don't change tack, which took about a week and a half. Also, the states DID take notice and so did the public at large.

It is going to go slower than that but pretty good list. However the Pacific Islands are in a situation where they really can't entertain visitors (maybe even without their own two week isolation) - they have nowhere near the resources of Australia to treat an outbreak.

Maybe rather than a huge infrastructure spend (which is slow to wind up and leaves white elephants (BNE/MLB bullet train) requiring ongoing upkeep (sometimes beyond economic benefit) well after the spending need as gone), the focus should be on pouring the stimulus into the likes of the homeless, prison population rehabilitation and otherwise disadvantaged that normally get overlooked during austerity. And I don't mean just sending checks but focused, organized and manpower resourced projects with goals and end dates.

They should relax some restrictions that should have never been in place anyway.

People should be allowed to drive to a different suburb without fear of being fined.

They should also open schools. Parents are not coping having to work and teach from home. Example: me. And I'm not the only one. Children are suffering right now.

Considering it, projects like large scale public housing construction (as in post-WWII scale) could be a win-win overall.

Big stimulus for construction companies, who can start working fairly quickly on housing projects. Replenishes the public housing stock which nationally is well short of needs. Reduces the most vulnerable peoples reliance on private landlords, which as we've seen in the last month can't be trusted. Increasing the housing supply and gently reducing rental demand could also help owner-occupiers get a foot in the market.

Whoops, realised I was posting from the world where Morrison didn't get his election miracle. Yeah, we're gonna get big tax cuts for business and WorkChoices 2: Post-pandemic Boogaloo.

As Comstar said, look at countries like the US. Or UK. Or France. Or Italy. Or Spain.

There will be decades of studies and analysis on the various responses taken and their impacts. It's almost certain we will find out that some of the measures could have been looser. However given the consequences of having an out of control pandemic in Australia having gone a little bit too far is much better than if they had tried to be more measured and not quite gone far enough, giving us both economic and health pain.

It sounded like this modelling was specific to transmission within Australia.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/i-wouldn-t-want-to-be-in-scott-morrison-s-shoes-20200428-p54nuy.html

quote:

The medicos' original modelling assumed Wuhan's R – reproduction number – of 2.68, whereas their more recent modelling using Australian numbers shows we started with Rs above 1 only in Victoria and NSW, before falling below 1 in all states bar Tasmania.

I've seen the same thing mentioned in a snippet of a paywalled article of the Arse that I can't access too, and a bunch of chuds I know are grabbing it to support their argument that Dictator Dan has Gone Too Far with the lockups.

Anyway, it sounded really suspicious that a virus this contagious would have an R of less than 1 with limited restrictive measures in place when Italy has only just managed to get it below 1 with quite tough restrictions, so I'm curious where the model came from and what it's assumption are. It sounds like it's something that has only recently been released too.

Yep. People ITT are using the same liberal argument hitting Rudd against the stimulus packages in the GFC. “Yeah we got through it but they spent too much!”

Yes, in hindsight maybe? The stimulus could have been organised better (school halls, pink batts loosely regulated etc) but all of this we know after the fact. Likewise with covid measures now. Maybe we could have / still could relax early. But “the modelling” isn’t gospel and we have to make guesses.

Simply not true. Specialist schools are also closed.

Schools are *meant* to be open for students who cannot be taught at home, but what many schools are saying is, "please do not bring your students here no matter what". These schools are also saying, "both parents working from home is not a good enough reason". I've heard this not just from my son's school, but from multiple schools across the metro area.

This is leading to students who are being neglected at home because both parents work. Prep-aged kids are not being given the attention they need.

This isn't sustainable. The Victorian Government is ignoring clear medical advice that schools can open, and they should do so right now.

Like I realise it's easy for people without kids to sit here and go, "just keep your loving kids at home", but when the number of new cases every day is in the low single digits or zero, and I have a kid who is actively being harmed by not being taught, it's not very easy to take that advice when he is missing out on crucial early childhood development.
