But yes, occasionally I am known to smash.
What I learned was I'd become so invested in Niko that I chose them not only over the world, but above the game itself that was making me choose. That seems a little strange -- Niko is fictional and only exists because of the game, after all -- but what can I say? They're a great character. And perhaps the game being so meta, and addressing us directly, made me feel more personally invested than I might have otherwise.

I'm glad to have seen the Save the World ending because (no surprise) in my game I chose Go Home.

More like 3/4 honestly. Solstice isnt really that long. Granted, theres a LOT of dialogue so its gonna take a while to write up.

I'll also say that while the ending and the choice did get me all melancholic... it wasnt really satisfying. I'm not a big fan of big arbitrary choices at the end, even if lping the game did make me realize the game was trying to foreshadow it and give each decision pros and cons. However, I really feel like solstice tries to also help justify and alleviate any issues/lingering questions people may have.

You sure about that? There's a video let's play of both. OneShot is 3:12 long, and Solstice is 2:47 in their LP.

I also seem to remember it taking nearly as long when I played it.

what horror the gas

When I played it, the initial run was much longer than Solstice, mostly because I spent a lot more time wandering and talking to everyone.

I also "cheated" and did both endings on a second run pre-Solstice because I missed a couple of achievements I wanted to go back and get, which probably lessened the impact for me somewhat.

You know, it would've been hilarious if they let you pester Niko into putting the sun in the press way back when and it just instantly queues up the Return Home ending.

That's from an older version of the game, pre-Steam. It would happen any time you closed the game outside of Niko sleeping/that one room in the tower. In this version, if you do that, once it opens again Niko comments that everything went dark for a moment.

Yeah, the game used to just end here, and Solstice was added later - but, AFAICT it was always intended to be added. You can see some of the hooks for it, when you look back.

Update 19: Solstice

My Burden is Light

Welcome to the Solstice run, please... enjoy your stay.

You found me.

...Why? You're already too late. Not much of the world remains. This will be apparent once you go outside. This place was never worth saving.

Do you still want to try? Then, remember this: Your actions here will affect Niko. Your "mission" is to help Niko leave. And most importantly...

Have we... already been through this, Goons? But that should be impossible... You only had one shot. I wasn't supposed to exist after that...

...."Goons?"... that sounds so familiar.

While re-doing the puzzle with the branch, we discover that the strange journal is already in Niko's possession... that is indeed, strange.

There is nothing new happening in the house, and as we've already seen the new dialogue that prophetbot gets... let's skip on over to the actual start of the solstice run - the mines.

SilverPoint

As a brief reminder, we met Silver and had a conversation with her that maybe saving the world would be futile because the world seemed to be dying regardless. Afterwards, we came to the mines and Silver wanted to escort us inside because of how dangerous it could be. We have done nothing else in this playthrough besides talking to Prophetbot and Silver.

Hmm, that clover on the ground... I don't think it was there the last time we were here.

[You were starting to black out...]

I...

I saw something?

[?]

It was like a really short dream, just now.

[Oh?]

I saw something like...

A robot, with a yellow eye...

[Are you sure you're okay?]

...yeah.

[...You know, now that you mentioned it. There is a robot who always insisted on going back to the abandoned mines.]

[Despite how long the mines have been in disrepair.]

[I hope he's okay.]

...He?

He doesn't look broken or anything...

But I didn't really... SEE him see him, yknow?

Like I said, it was kinda like a dream...

And he was up close!

[Or... hallucination.]

[Whatever it is that living beings have.]

Hm...

Does the robot you know of have a yellow eye?

I don't think I've seen any other robots like that...

[I would not know.]

[I never met him myself. Only heard of him from a friend of mine.]

Your friend, huh...

I mentioned in the last update that there were changes in the mines that could be seen on a second playthrough. This conversation is it. If you played the game a second time before the Solstice update came out, you could get this conversation with Silver, but then have to move on. With the new Solstice content though...

What's...

That wasn't glowing before!

What IS this...?

[That... was going to be my question.]

[Where did you... get that book?]

Oh, uh...

It was with me when I woke up back at the house.

I didn't really question it at the time...

I flipped through a couple of pages, but I don't understand a word!

[No... I have never heard of anything like that.]

But I... know who wrote the book.]

Oh?

[However...]

[I've only seen his books with a black clover on the cover.]

[If he went through the trouble of putting yellow phosphor in it...]

[And the fact that you woke up with it in the first place...]

Yellow... phosphor?

Oh yeah! That's the rare phosphor that people think the sun is made of, right?

...

I don't think anyone's told me about it...

[Ah... I can show you if you'd like.]

Pretty!

Oh! Looks like there's a clover in the necklace too!

...like the book.

[Well... it IS the same person.]

Oooh.

[That's... why I think this journal would be important.]

[You said it JUST started glowing?]

Yeah?

[That was right after your vision, then...]

[...This HAS to mean something. Maybe you should at least try to read it again...]

Silver takes off back to the entrance, and leaves us here to figure out what to do next... which is to read the book again.

Oh... I found this page.

It looks kind of like a drawing of this room.

Maybe it's telling us we should come here?

Which we did, already.

So... it looks like we're on the right track!

Yeah and so is that mine cart. :rimshot:

This took me a while to realize at first, but it's, again, really obvious in hindsight. How did we solve the Tower? It was thanks to that clover in Niko's inventory and clover.exe. Well, a clover just showed up on the ground here... Let's go stand on it, and check out the book one more time.

Huh... well, that's new.

[I'm not sure... I wasn't looking.]

To be honest... neither was I...

I was just taking a closer look at the journal...

And then I found this page that looks like a drawing of this room... When I looked back up, this minecart just... showed up out of thin air!

Should I be... worried?

[Hmm...]

[This looks like a standard issue minecart, though.]

Ah... that does make sense.

But uh, it didn't do that last time! Or the fact that the drawing had the room in perfect alignment with the minecart?

[I'm just surprised it still works.]

[Guess that means we'll have a working vehicle now.]

[Not sure why you would want to visit the deeper mines, but...]

[If you wanted to, we now have that option.]

...

Is the minecart even going to fit both of us?

[No.]

But I wanted you to come with us... I know I've got Goons, but...

...honestly? This place gives me the creeps!

[I would just have to follow along on the rails.]

But doesn't it look a little... precarious...?

[The magnetic rails can hold me in place.]

[It's only ever dangerous to walk on if you're an organic being.]

[Which you are.]

Gotcha.

With nothing else to stop us, it's time to investigate the inner mines and see if they hold some of the answers to the questions we still have.

We get to control the minecart! Which is pretty nifty, you can quickly outrun Silver as she seems to also have the steady movement of a snail.

Hmm, let's check in with Silver and see how she's doing.

Hello.

[Do you... need anything?]

Nah.

[Okay.]

Hello.

[Hello again.]

Such a small interaction but I love it. :allears:

Okay, now to be serious and continue on ahead.

Inner Mines

Out of Protocol

[This... This isn't what I'm supposed to be showing you at all! How did you get here? ...I can only think of one person. He... contacted you? How long has he been... doing this?]

[...]

[...it doesn't matter at this point.]

[You should turn back. Please turn back. Bad things are going to happen. Very bad things. At this rate, Niko will be in danger. Please turn back.]

Well... that... was ominious. The Entity always spoke to us through a computer or other electronic device. They've never just directly spoke to us, and especially not to tell us to... stop what we're doing.

Oh...

[Hm...? What's wrong?]

I...

I have a bad feeling about this, all of a sudden...

Feels like I should... not be here...

[Ah. Do you want to head back, then?]

I... don't know...

What do you think, Goons? Should we head back?

We can, in fact, choose to head back towards the entrance... and leave the inner mines alone. But that would just put us back onto the regular path. Despite Niko's fear... we need to push on.

The Goons say we should keep going.

[Alright.]

We can also choose to talk to Silver and get the option again, in case you change your mind. But our mind is resolute - forward!

...But what will we find in the inner mines that could be so dangerous...?

This is getting interesting! And I can definitely see how people might say the game feels more complete (as I seem to recall someone in this thread saying earlier) with the Solstice content. Seeing the content again but from a different perspective gives you more clarity on what's going on, and the original run left a lot of unanswered questions.

Alright, I'm intrigued. We now have Niko, the protagonist, who would normally also be the stand-in for the player in the game except that they've always been talking directly to the player as a godlike presence. That makes the player also a character in the story. And now we're adding the player-as-a-real-person, and the author of the game, as characters/concepts in the story. And at least one NPC knows about all of it!

Curious though -- he said the real world ended. There's any number of possible definitions for "real"...

I'm afraid so.
They're trying their best with it, but I find every time anyone tries this particular meta plot twist it just breaks my immersion entirely. I have a harder time caring about Silver or Niko because the game just went out of its way to remind me they're not real. Just feels like any plot developments from now on are just going to be contrived dollhouse solutions to contrived dollhouse problems.

This is, and has always been, a story about Niko; the other characters matter only insofar as they affect them. So long as Niko isn't jaded by the "everything is fake" revelation, then, those characters still matter.

Tenebrais
Sep 2, 2011

There's another person called out as real too - you. You, the player, are unambiguously a real person, and you went to the effort to come back here and see this through because you care about the world and about Niko.

Really the revelation was inevitable once you reset the game by deleting your save file. Not a lot of ways to make that diegetic without going meta.

Update 22: Cedric the Aviator

Inner Mines

...

...

I... think I remember something...

I remember... what I did at the end. I remember... putting in the sun...

And then everything got really bright...

I... don't remember a lot of the details.

...

I just got brought back anyway...

...

.....

...And with that cheery note, we've got control of Niko back! Hopefully... we can lead them down better paths this time. We've reached the end of the line with the minecart, and this cave has nothing else for us. Let's head outside and see where we ended up at.

To Sleep

It's been a while since we've seen the greenery of the Glen. It's much nicer than the drudgery of the Barrens. We can't head towards the right, so to the left we go!

A vine bridge? Is this Maize's doing or just random overgrowth?

Looks like parts of the ground is missing.

I wonder if it's safe to walk across these vines...

Only one way to find out, I guess...

Would have sucked to find out after the fact that they aren't safe. :v:

Let's head inside this door to see where it takes us.

Flooded Ruins

Oh wow, we really did just pop out right by the city - just like Proto said. For all his sarcasm, the dude at least had a plan in place.

The... big robot, right?

[PLEASE HELP ME CHECK ON THEM. I CANNOT LEAVE MY STATION.]

Alright...

This bot will not let us pass until we go and check on the Glen's Guardian bot. Which is fine, because our destination is the city anyway. So I guess we can pop over there real quick, make sure everything's ok and let this bot know so we can mosey on over to the Refuge to meet Cedric. Easy peasy.

Pshhh, this is a video game! Why would things be simple and easy? Of course the squares have not only taken out the Guardian but are also blocking the only path into the city. Welp! Time for plan B: crying profusely.

Isn't that... the city gate? It's...

[TH#e .%%GAT;E IS C//L OSED UNT#IL FU#RTHER N%OTICE.]

...

Well... at least it was able to still say something after the "Do not approach" spiel that most bots give. That's gotta count for something... right?

Just past the Guardian, it looks like the bridge is down back towards the town. We can go access the save point if we need to, but there's no new scenes for resting in the bed. With no other choice, lets double back towards the original bot that gave us this task to see what they say and see if anyone in the ruins can help us past the bridge.

[AH. THAT IS OUTSIDE MY CAPACITY FOR HELP. YOU MAY PROCEED TO THE DEEPER RUINS.]

Alright.

No solidarity amongst robots I see. Or maybe the Guardian robot was this one's boss and treated them like crap. In which case, don't treat your workers like robots! Or uh, worker robots like robots...

Ah, the left path is open this go-round. I wonder if there's anybody in that side that could maybe help us across that bridge?

...or not!

We'll have to trek further into the ruins to try and get some help.

Heading towards the right leads to more squares blocking off the way. There was nothing there previously besides a computer to talk to the entity, so it was unlikely that we were gonna find anyone anyway.

Jeez, this place really got hit hard! There's squares all over the place, and these are even blocking a robot and a back entrance to the local village. We really need some help with the bridge now since that's the only way forward.

[TWO CHILDREN RESIDE NEAR HERE.]

No change to this bot since we last saw it. I guess this area was spared from the squares. But hey, maybe the kids are nearby and we can check in on them! It's actually been quite a while since we've them. Hopefully they're doing ok.

...By blocks!

...

Waaaaait a minute.

I remember something about this...

Never knew it'd be so easy!

...(ow my foot ow)

Thank goodness for Niko's brand new superpower: selective rememberance of the first playthrough. That new superpower helped us get past the blocked alleyway. With that out of the way, let's go see how the kids are doing.

Oh... that looks... bad.

Oh...The door...

I knew we'd lose our home eventually, but... I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon...

Oh jeez!

Are you guys okay?

Children of the Ruins

Oh my stars! You're... the savior!

!!!

Um... uh...

It's an honor to meet you!

Yes!

I'd invite you inside, but as you can see, our home is...

It's got squares in it!

Yes, Alula, thank you.

It's... getting everywhere now... isn't it?

Hm?

The squares... there are way more than before!

Even the gate to the Refuge is destroyed now.

That didn't happen last time!

.....

.....

Yeah, you know like the last time we came by and saw it was all fine and dandy! No squares, now squares! What a country!

Uhh...

Nothing!

(almost let that slip, Goons...)

Guess I should introduce myself again...

My name is Niko!

Ni...ko...

Oh gosh! Would it not be rude to call you by name?

No worries, Calamus!

I...um...

uh...

(not again!)

I'm starting to think you're not good at keeping secrets, Niko.

The messiah just knows these things, Calamus!

Riiiight?

Y-yes! Of course!

(phew)

We just got bailed out pretty hard by Alula there. Thankfully Alula still owns, which helps us out.

Ah... you were saying... about the gate?

Oh, right!

Looks like I can't get in the city through the old gate anymore...

Do... either of you know another way to get in?

I remember...

I mean, I HEARD that there's some sort of hidden passage around here somewhere!

Oh! The passage to the burial grounds?

That's the one!

Oh... but I'm not sure if that'll be of any use here...

It's been flooded for a long time, and there's no boat...

Not to mention, the burial grounds itself is pretty far from the city!

That's ok! I would still like to see it!

Niko is on our wavelength and just wants to get new content in this playthrough. Though they are right, we don't have any other leads at this point besides the burial grounds.

Alright, in that case...

...please follow us.

We could go check in on Maize, but we have no real reason to at this point. Our only lead is the burial grounds... so let's follow after the kids into the courtyard.

Children of the Ruins (Piano)

At least the courtyard is unaffected for now...

We usually get to the burial grounds through our friend, but...

...he hasn't been here in forever!

Normally this courtyard would be where we meet up...

I hope he comes back soon...

Been a bit since we heard about the mysterious friend, aka the Author. It was in the middle of a pretty dramatic moment, but Proto seemed to also be referring to them as well. The subtle and not so subtle referrences to the Author may only go up from here until the end.

Oh! I should probably take these ins-

...wait

...we can't get back into our house...

...At least you'll get a change of clothes before starting over.

Let's head inside the mausoleum.

...Niko!

Niko? What's wrong?

You looked like you were about to faint!

...

It's... not the first time it's happened.

...oh?

Earlier I was in the Barrens, and I...

...saw something like this too.

It was like a dream, but only for a split second...

...sounds like a vision.

Like something a prophet would see!

I... guess?

The robot lady I was with earlier had a fancy word for it, though.

Wait...

Lemme...check something.

Oh! I was right!

...huh?

When I had the vision back at the Barrens... the book started glowing too!

I wanted to see if I could get it to happen again, and...

Where did you get that!!!

Oh, uh...

I had it with me when I woke up in this world!

It looks like one of our friend's books!

...Except it's glowy!

...that's what the lady said too...

Hm...

Goons... let's see if we can do anything with the journal in this room...

This conversation actually started similarly to the conversation we had with the kids in Update 18... but swerved to a completely new conversation after only a line or two. Which is interesting considering how few people were likely to see that conversation. The game has quite a bit of content for people willing to put in the effort to get it.

Now then, it may be a bit hard to see but there is a clover next to Niko, so let's stand on that clover and check out the glowing journal.

Woah!

How did that boat get there?

...

Okay, I'm pretty sure it has to do with this journal, now...

The exact same thing happened back at the Barrens.

Seriously?

The journal was glowing, so I wanted to take a closer look at it.

Then, I found a page that looked like a drawing of the room we were in, and then...

A minecart showed up!

What!

What!

That sounds freaky...

No it doesn't!

The Goons must've done something!

We uh, did not do anything, for the record.

Still...

...Hey! We have a boat now!

We can go to the burial grounds and visit mom again!

But...

Come on, Calamus!

Niko and the Goons are with us!

Well... if the Goons made the boat appear... it should be safe...

Note: We did NOT do this. Please do not assume the integrity of the boat based on your misplaced belief in Goons.

What... do you think, Goons?

Despite the prompt from Niko, we do not actually get a choice to say anything. But we do get control of Niko again. So I guess if you don't feel like it's safe you can just ALT-F4 and never reopen the game out of fear. Not a bad strategy I guess, but we are officially in the cannot stop going playthrough. So, onwards we go...

A cutscene does not start playing though, we actually get some control over the boat. And by some control I mean we can move forward, which fits our build as the "Don't stop going forward" playthrough.

The First Universe - A really nice little track. I'd definitely recommend you listen to this one.

C'mon, Alula. Let's go pay our respects...

Okay!

The kids head on to their parent's grave. It's uh, a bit of a downer, even though they were upfront about why they wanted to come here even in the normal runthrough. I guess we should take a tour around the place.

The kids weren't too far away from the docks. It seems a bit insensitive to just butt in on the kids during a very tender moment in their young lives... but on the other hand, the content...

This is her grave...

Ah...

It's been years, but... it's still... hard, y'know?

...

Sigh... Alula...

Wanna help me look for some flowers for mom later?

Y E S

This game has been real good at making me smile or ooh or ah, but very few moments actually moved me like this one. That's not to try and take away from the game, just to underline how really good this moment is. You can actually get so much from these kids relationship over the game and this little moment is such a nice subtle summary of it all and especially of Calamus.

...

...hi Niko!

Hi!

I hope she can see us wherever she is!

And then there's Alula :allears:

Let's get back to exploring this area.

Left side looks pretty empty, let's check the right side then I guess head on back. At least we got a nice scene out of this place.

Oh... or we just found a new character.

Vestige

!

You... um...

My name is Niko...

Ah!

N-nice finally to meet you! ...no, wait.

It is a pleasure to be of acquaintance at last, Niko.

My name is Cedric.

Oh!

I'm supposed to be looking for you too!

I am aware.

Prototype had contacted me earlier, saying that you would be on your way to the city.

He did?

He sent me a message after his memories were restored.

Oh...

Remember when Proto got mad at us for being loud because he was trying to get a connection? It's pretty cool that the game actually set this up and didn't just have an rear end pull of "Oh, Proto sent out a dying message telling me everything".

He told me to wait in the city, but I thought it'd be faster for me to pick you guys up.

...Turns out, that was a terrible idea.

Pick... us up?

...wait... YOU can fly that plane??

What... is a plane?

That thing behind you!

They're called planes in my world!

Oh...

I did not realize they existed in other worlds...

...wait! Are you the friend that Calamus and Alula was talking about, then? Is this the same flying machine they were talking about?

I do not know anyone named Calamus or Alula.

I think... they're meant to be friends with my father.

...in previous iterations of the...

...your father?

He was the original owner of the flying machine...

...it's... one of his greatest inventions, actually.

...flying machine.

IT'S COOL EITHER WAY!!

Niko's love of airplanes flying machines is endearing, especially as someone who has traveled coach in one... not as hyped up as you think!

Thanks?

But to answer your earlier question... I am proficient in operating the machine.

...but... something weird happened to the engine when I was in the air earlier...

I had to make an emergency landing on this tiny island before I crashed into the city wall.

You almost crashed?

That's terrible!

It was not pleasant, I will admit.

I wonder if the engine problem has to do with the square particle disruptions...

I checked, but.... there isn't any of that square stuff inside the machine itself.

...but I noticed some islands in the Glen are REALLY messed up now.

They are...

Sigh. Guess I should have listened to Proto in the first place.

...say, where is he?

He said he was coming with you...

Is he still back at the main islands?

Uh, well... you see there uh Cedric... He's uh... y'know, when robots start to break down they get taken to this server farm upstate...

Oh... actually...

...back at the Barrens, he...

There was a cave-in... and then a bunch of squares... he ... and the robot lady...

... neither of them made it out.

...

He... did give me this, though.

This disk he pulled from his head...

Oh!!!

Oh thank goodness.

He gave you his main drive!

As long as I have this, I should be able to bring him back.

Phew. I knew Proto was too good to keep from this world for long!

R-really?

It's gonna be hard, but yes.

You need all three of us for the big door.

The...?

But first thing's first, we need to find a way to go to the city.

Right... The city gate is kind of kaput now.

If this machine was working, we could just fly right in there...

I've isolated the issue with the machine, but I can't repair it with the stuff I have on hand.

Oh? What's wrong with it?

...

Do you think you'll be able to fix it if the Goons and I help you find those things?

...maybe.

Problem is... the Glen isn't exactly a very high-tech area. I'm not sure if you'll be able to find anything so specialized here.

We'll try anyway!

We can't really do anything else right now...

Alright Goons, we finally got a lead! We need to go find the parts for the airplane flying machine's repairs so that we can bring back Proto!!! And also maybe save Niko too, I guess.

it's not what you've got, it's what you make of it
I get the sense that the "we've actually been playing a game all along and deliberately used Niko to power it" twist is being used to its full potential yet? Niko finds out about it, calls us out for what he thinks our actions are, doesn't call us out when it's elaborated on, then keeps trusting our implicit guidance anyway even though we're told he's upset. we haven't gotten a chance to actually have a conversation with Niko about it; apologize, try to explain, establish what we-as-a-character think about what we've done. we don't know how he feels about us now. might've missed something here, but hopefully this'll be elaborated on in the future.

That moment was niko thinking we were in control of the whole thing rather than us just being along for the ride. Niko thought we were the reason they got abducted from their home to pilot this thing rather than us just being some dopes playing a video game.

These twists are so delicate to balance for precisely this reason. I think where the game does have its saving grace is that it tries to persuade us that Niko is as real as us but just from a different world/dimension. If you're able to suspend your disbelief enough to go along with that (or just like Niko enough as a character to keep going) I think the game goes in a good direction. If you're unable to care for Niko, then solstice will not get better for you, only worse.
