I think there are only like two characters from previous games that show back up in 3. Most of the story follows on from the books. So I’d recommend reading those if you want the full Lore experience, they’re pretty good. Although the game’s set up so that you don’t really need to, it provides enough context to understand everything

Anyway my GOTY is Fire Emblem: Three Houses at the moment but we’ll see what happens when I beat Death Stranding. GOTD is harder but probably either Witcher 3 or Yakuza 0
