On his way to her lair, he encounters a mysterious person called Dark Doom. Dark Doom happens to be a retired fighting instructor, who taught kids to defend themselves. Mario takes him on and gets transported to “Hometown”. Put in the memories of Silver’s past, Mario finds that she was abused her whole life and fights off a squadron of Koopas as Silver. He also finds “Nightmare” and fights off the evil side of her. Mario meets one of Silver’s friends, Damon. He is being trained by Doom to help with fighting. Eventually, Mario finds Silver in the door of the Wonder Stone and finishes off the queen. Then, Jean comes in to wrap things up. Meeting again after a long time, Silver realises from Mario what it means to be a good person. Then they get together and Mario’s adventure comes to a close.”

Update 1 - RPOOOYYX

This is the entire intro screen.

Let's go with Gilbert. For now, anyway...

We can only access the tower and the pass for now.

Default L1 stats, no gear, Mario only.

Like in the original, we're greeted by a Snifit.

The battle music is a remix of the initial Booster plaza theme, the one that plays before the actual Booster theme kicks in.

Unlike the original, this Snifit has no problem steamrolling a L1 Mario with no gear.

Also we have no save point access yet. Hooray...?

Maybe we're supposed to go to Booster Jean Pass.

Doesn't end well here either.

At this point I start entering gibberish because I expect I'll be doing this a few times. And I'm not wrong...

This fight is actually winnable. Here we fight a Snifit Jr. and an ORB USER.

The ORB USER has sky-high defense but only 4HP.

The Snifit Jr. is pretty weak. The ORB USER hits hard, but at least it's not a one-shot.

The ORB USER can also heal, which...eh. The good thing about this is that the ORB USER misses the next turn after healing, so Mario won't get walloped.

The Snifit Jr. will go down in one or two hits, so overall this isn't too bad, except for the fact that we currently lack any means of HP recovery.

The puzzle still exists, not that I remember about it. It's been like fifteen years since I played this game, so my memory is fuzzy as hell and I'll be relying a lot on LeaveMyWife's LP of the game to catch the differences between the original and this hack.

Really, avoiding combat is a necessity due to the complete lack of healing items so far.

Jean: Although as with normal life,

I'm not cutting anything out here. We jump straight from that thought to the next:

Jean: This tower has been passed down and given to the person after.

Well, alright then.

Oh gently caress you.

There's a save point a few rooms into the tower, but we've got to reach it first!

Also I explore both rooms of Jean Pass, but there's nothing of interest there yet besides a flower to give us a Flower Point. The foes here will kick Mario's rear end right now.

This Flower Tab is still there. Once we get techniques beyond Jump, this'll be nice.

The Rob-ombs here aren't too bad. They can explode and kill you with one hit, but sometimes they won't do anything.

The former is what happens to me, though.

Sometimes the Snifit Jr.'s will spawn with a Chaos Clown, who will throw cards at you for a third of your max HP. This is essentially another wipe.

Eventually I make it through the Rob-ombs...

...and grab the Masher from the chest. It's a ten attack boost over being unarmed, so yeah, I'll take it.

The Hammerquin will leap in the air and then hit us with a hammer. It's not too bad, honestly.

Later.

The retro room is glitched so that this sprite shows up whenever Mario doesn't move. Otherwise it behaves as normal.

Right now you want to avoid everything you can until you reach the save point.

OH THANK GOD

I completely forgot this puzzle existed, so I didn't solve it. I'll do that next time.

Key thing to remember here. This is my sole way of healing right now, so I better make it count!

I decide to backtrack for now and check out Jean Pass now that I hit some random switch.

Along the way I beat up a free Rob-omb and trigger a level up.

And at this point BizHawk crashed and exited out. I'm not really upset.

Next time, we'll see if there even is a next time!

I'm at a point where I can survive fine in the tower between item drops and leveling up giving a full heal, but apparently L5 is too low a level to fight Jean as he can do a massive chunk of damage to you, so I'm probably going to have to grind some more. Yep!

Also I'll start posting the new battle themes next update. One of them is certainly something...

Also also things don't make any more sense from here.

Update 2 - This is my personal let's play

Since my emulator crashed, it didn't back up my save RAM, so I get to do the 5-10 minutes of actual gameplay all over again.

This time I go with a name I'm rather fond of.

Also I avoid all battles, as I need to focus on saving first and then pick the right battles to level up on due to the complete lack of reliable healing.

This time I solve the puzzle here.

In the original, this is where Bowser would get his first weapon upgrade. But Bowser's not in this hack, so...

...instead this random terrapin shows up out of nowhere instead.

TERRY: Just as I expected. She gave Jean a wound which is why she was locked up. Hm hm hm...

I'm not going to ask any questions here.

It's a very minor armor upgrade, but at L1 having any defense at all is a boon.

I eventually change the core SNES emulator for BizHawk from SNES9X to BSNES, and that lets me level up. Level ups are full heals, which is a godsend here.

My main priority is bumping up my Defense, as that's the main thing getting me killed this early on.

After all that, I take a detour to properly explore Booster Pass.

Music: Battle 2

This bush has a new battle theme available, and it's...I don't even know.

It's on par with the grey Snifits in Jean Tower, so it wipes the floor with me.

The switch in Jean Tower unlocks this area, though.

A Frog Coin, a Flower, and our first item.

APPRENTICE: If I beat you, they'll make me Snifit 4! If I'm lucky!

This guy's supposed to be a joke fight in the original. Not so much here!

You don't Game Over here, though. Mario gets back up at 1HP and goes on as normal.

I even head back to the tower to check if this fellow shows up as Snifit 4, but I don't think they do. That said, there's something important about this that will make sense become relevant in the next update.

Music: Battle 1

At any rate, all I can do for now is grind a bit. The ORB things will sometimes proc a full heal upon defeat, which is nice.

Also these foes drop a lot of consumables, mostly Mushrooms and Honey Syrups, but also Mid Mushrooms.

And this is Snifit 3. They kill me effortlessly.

The Fireball spawn rate isn't really that different here, and even better, these things do little damage at this point and drop 10EXP an encounter, so they aren't a bad option for grinding.

The chain chomps can halve your attack and are pretty durable, but at this point they won't wipe me.

JEAN: Eh...? Oh hey! It's you again! It's great to see you beat me here. I can't believe it! Since you're here, maybe you could clear up something for me.

JEAN: PLEASE... fix my clogged toilet! Hurry up! Fix it please!

nope

JEAN: Great... how will I be able to fix my broken toilet NOW?

...Yep!

Anyway these boost our defenses a bit so they're always welcome to have.

Also the game finally recognizes us being in Booster Tower, so there's that.

JEAN: Hmmmm?

SNIFIT: Jean, I think you need look [sic] more carefully for it. Maybe you have it somewhere?

JEAN: A...ha!

As in the original, there's the whole "Hide from the Snifits opening the curtains" thing going on.

But first, dialogue. I'm not cutting anything out here, it's just as disjointed in the game.

JEAN: Right! Now, about the toilet problem, who should have to fix it? Well? Speak up!

JEAN: Hello? Can you fix my toilet please? HEY! HEY! HEY! Hello? Bob?

JEAN: ...... He does not exist...? Where's that plumber guy? I think I need to find and get him to do it for me. If he's here... I got big bucks for him! Mr. Plumber! Come out and work!

Again, I'm not leaving anything out. We jump right from that to...

JEAN: NUMBER ONE! You're not supposed to reveal the secrets y'know.

And yet again, still not leaving anything out here...

JEAN: NO! This can't be! How will we call for XL if we don't have it on hand?

Pretty sure this goes just as it did in the original.

JEAN: AHHHH! I'm not going to be the one getting hurt if you dare to lose that number. Argh!! Number two, YOU look, too!

After round two of curtain dodging...

JEAN: Hey now! It's pain stackingly [sic] obvious that it's there. Number 3! It's your turn!

After the final round of curtains...

JEAN: It's right here you dumbasses!

So you know how in the original, you could avoid this fight if you succeed in dodging the Snifits? In this hack, it doesn't matter at all! You still fight Jean either way!

Music: Boss - Jean

First off, Jean's boss theme sounds like a really cool intro to what should be a bangin' remix of the first Booster Tower theme, except it never leaves the intro stage, making it kinda underwhelming.

Anyway, Jean usually uses a punch attack, though sometimes he'll throw a more powerful bomb attack that does more damage.

Either way, we're way overmatched here. I end up doing a good chunk of grinding.

Eventually I beat Snifit 3 and get an Ice Bomb for my troubles.

I also get an XL Pizza from a random encounter, and oddly it can't be used in battle.

I grind all the way to L9 with the occasional attempt before I make any real progress on Jean. I also get a few Mushroom drops along the way.

The boosts to Attack and Defense really help here.

As does learning Super Jump.

After taking some damage, Jean will use Spritz Bomb and Loco Express, which do a good chunk more damage.

After dealing enough damage (I think enough to defeat Booster in the original)...

...Jean activates his red form.

He does more damage and will also throw cards. It's more challenging, but manageable enough.

Oh and there's another phase where three Snifits join the fight.

Suffice to say, I can't win where I'm currently at. So it seems I'm stuck here. Am I really expected to level even more to beat this fight?

Actually, no! There's another path we can take, it's just not intuitive and I end up stumbling upon it completely by mistake! Next time, the weirdness gets turned up a few notches.

Update 3 - More plans, more killing.

Right now, I'm at a bit of a roadblock. Jean is a bit too strong for me to handle, so let's explore again and see if there's something I missed.

My first thought is to try to kill the Snifits from earlier. They're not trivial, but they're easily beatable now, and each drops an Ice Bomb.

With two down, I try to take on the last Snifit, but I couldn't get it to spawn this time. Go figure.

Next up, Booster Pass!

The Artichoker is a breeze at my level.

As is Lakitu. I land a Maple Syrup and even learn Super Flame thanks to the fat EXP gain from the battle.

The Apprentice, battle name Snifit Sr. still wipes the floor with me.

But as I leave, something weird happens.

OK, I can access Moleville now. Sure, why not.

The problem is in an earlier attempt, I actually left after losing to the Apprentice to see if it changed anything in Booster Tower (it didn't in the lower levels, anyway), and I did not get this pop-up. But apparently I did some other magic trigger that lets me now visit Moleville.

Alright, then!

To Moleville, I guess!

First off, we finally have a freaking inn and item shop!

Also, this mole now sells the ultimate gear for this hack using Frog Coins. The Scrooge Ring halves FP cost, while the Mega Glove and Super Jacket are the ultimate weapon/armor.

I could afford the Mega Glove at 6 FC, but I opt to wait to afford the Super Jacket, as defense is my bigger liability, and it costs 9 FC.

The NPC dialogue is exactly the same as far as I can tell, except for the cutscene with Bowser, since, well...

...Bowser's been replaced.

RATTY: Yes. Yes. We need some crazy weapons to use for glory!

SILVER: My powers have almost come to me. Don't worry. Evil will commence soon! As for now......

SILVER: You understand what it means to be a loyal minion!

This hack never stops being weird.

The entire rest of this section proceeds as it does in the original, so on to the actual mines.

Hardhat, Boomy Bob, Sparky...

Pounder...

...and Drill Bit.

Turns out I'm way overleveled for this area and I breeze through it all. I probably wouldn't have been if I knew I could unlock Moleville earlier by...hell, I'm still not sure how I unlocked Moleville!

The major change is the hack cuts out the whole chunk of gameplay where you have to find a bomb to unblock a path and then fight Croco. All that's been removed, including the rooms that all took place in, and instead the path is already unlocked.

Which means we can get ourselves a Frog Coin...

...and blast our way through the enemies with an invincibility star.

At the end is Punchinello, complete with his own boss theme.

Music: Boss - Punchinello

This theme is half of a potentially neat remix.

Unlike the original fight, there is no dialogue here.

Punchinello only summons mid-tier bom-ombs, and his main attack is Sand Storm, which actually does a whopping 5 damage to my overleveled self and inflicts Shivers to halve my attack.

That said, I'm still way overleveled for this dungeon, and as a nice bonus I don't have to finish off the bombs either.

And with that we've got Star Piece...

...Number Seven? Yeah, OK, we've got all seven Star Pieces now. Cool, OK, why not.

Instead of the mine cart, we have a large room cluttered with lizards...

...and the Wonder Stone. This is probably important considering it's mentioned in the game's bio.

The Lizaros can inflict poison and boost their Vigor, while the Chrimers hit relatively hard (high single-digit damage, so I'm still pretty overleveled) and can inflict Silence on our silent protagonist with Elegy.

Also it doesn't seem like I can progress further in here.

So I guess that's as good a place as any to call it for today!

Next time... ?????????

Update 4 - DARK DOOM

So last time--

...oh, the save's not loading. Good thing I'm using save states as a backup option!

We cleared out Moleville, and now we're done despite the NPC dialogue not changing any! Honestly, I don't even know if Moleville is mandatory! Oh well!

Before I continue, I scour for hidden chests, which seem to be unchanged from the original.

The Super Jacket boosts all stats by a fair amount, and is probably the best option of the bunch. The Mega Glove is a decent alternative, being 15 points stronger than the Masher but with no other stat boost.

The Scrooge Ring is kind of a trap as we'll get better accessories later and "Half FP" is kinda pointless when your basic attack is much more reliable anyway.

SNIFIT 4: I'll wear the number proudly!

Turns out the Apprentice finally got promoted to Snifit 4 due to kicking our butt. I'm glad things worked out for them!

With some new armor and extra levels, let's tackle Jean again.

He's a total pushover this time. Our attack will rip through his HP, while he can barely dent our defense.

I also have enough bomb to one-shot the Snifits.

And from there, Jean goes down in little effort. We even get a Flower Box for our efforts!

JEAN: Move aside so I can open that door.

As we chase Jean out...

Music: Boss - Pizza Guy

PIZZA GUY: Did somebody order an Extra Large Pepperoni-Mushroom Pizza?

But...nobody ever ordered the pizza...

PIZZA GUY: Hey!

The Pizza Guy is a joke. He can use ice spells and swing a knife, but is otherwise no real threat.

On the bright side, hey, free pizza!

And Ultra Jump ain't too shabby to grab.

Also we can access the penultimate area, Silver's Lair.

Music: Silver's Lair

It's a purple version of Toadstool's Castle.

Dry Bones are annoying since they have to be finished off with fire or other non-Attack stuff, but otherwise I'm still overleveled for this point.

The Blue Guardian's supposed to be a miniboss, but it seems to be optional and really doesn't stand out any.

Once we enter the throne room...

...we suddenly end up here.

And now we're in Bowser's Castle, kind of.

We do finally fight Goombas, and they're tanky enough to take a hit and survive.

Piranha Plants are a bit annoying since they can inflict Sleep, but otherwise are also no threat.

You can also do the goomba thumping minigame here if you really want to.

After all that, we suddenly end up in the Kero Sewers.

Complete with tutorial on using pipes. Yeah, OK.

This one takes awhile to navigate but is otherwise not that interesting.

Cheeps sure do exist!

Boos also take a special attack like Fire to go down, while Shadows can inflict Terror to halve your attack.

Ratty is unremarkable, though the Scary Crows can turn you into a mushroom.

Eventually I find the switch to drain the water.

And encounter a bonus boss, Purplequin.

And it's actually a minor challenge! Its special attack, Hammer Time, will hit for 50 damage, so you want to keep topped up and go hard on offense.

The rewards are pretty nice, with a Flower Jar and an accessory that gives modest boosts to our defenses and minor to our offenses.

Eventually I finish exploring and find the way to progress. This is a very long stretch, but we're near the end...

And at last, we're going to finally meet...

...the biggest badass ever.

?????: Yes......you must be that...Mario fellow I hear so often about. Am I right?

?????: Goodbye forever!

Music: Boss - DARK DOOM

This is DARK DOOM, clearly the greatest badass the universe has ever seen. You better be prepared before you tangle with this guy!

This is his only attack that hits double-digit damage.

Otherwise he'll use a variety of other weaker elemental moves combined with stabbing us with what I must assume is the HAR-DOOM.

Eventually, knock him down to low enough health and he'll change to a darker, even edgier color. He'll also start using his signature attack, Dark Matter.

He's immune to special attacks, but physicals still put a hurt on him so he ends up not being too difficult.

And with that, Mario has overcome DARK DOOM. If only I could ever be so lucky...

~X_DARK_DOOM_666_X~: She was really good at it! And she beat me 3 times! It was spectacular! BUT! This isn't over! I'll be back.

Next time, we explore the final area of the game. Things still won't make any sense.

Update 5 - What do you want, idiot?

Welcome to the final area of this hack, Hometown.

Music: Hometown

It's just a reskinned version of Monstro Town.

The Three Musty Fears seems to be unchanged, which means we can't complete this as far as I know.

SHOPKEEPER: It's really nice to see a new face around here. You must be the new family that just moved into town. In that case...my boys are gonna want to see you. (Come out and say hello!)

SHOPKEEPER: I figured if you came here, then that means you wanna buy stuff. Haha!

Yoshi Candy and Rock Candy are both nice, Yoshi for restoring HP, Rock for dealing damage.

The rest is pretty outclassed by those two, though Maple Syrup takes care of FP needs.

Let's check out the dojo next.

DAMON: Oh my gosh!

Silver...?

DAMON: I've been working on my fighting! And it's really helping me! If you want... we could do a practise match.

Same deal as the original, we fight a disciple and then tackle the Sensai three times.

So, the "Silver" thing wasn't a joke. For some reason, we are Mario inhabiting the memories of Silver. Which means all combat scenarios in Hometown has us fight as Silver.

Unsurprisingly, Silver plays similar to Toadstool.

Sadly, we can't get her new gear or anything, but fortunately this isn't that bad a challenge.

As for the Sensai...

DARK DOOM: Har har! Pretty good lad. The fighting is really fun once you get into it.

DARK DOOM: Analyse the fighting style.

We'll come back to this in a moment.

The Wonder Stone in Moleville Mountain is what breaks the seal for this door, and it just so happens to lead to the final boss of this hack.

I never did bother with this because I suck with the timing and don't feel like save state cheesing. Oh well!

This Toad used to be a Thwomp that would knock the key outside down.

If we visit the Monstermama, she's instead replaced by...

SYLVIA: I don't care!

Not a very nice lady.

So this is Silver's family, and an attempt to explain why Silver is so evil.

SYLVIA: WHAT?!? I'm not your mother. Shoo, leave. I don't need you.

SYLVIA: Sky Troopas, I need you!

Their dialogue is unchanged for their entrance.

SERGEANT FLUTTER: Yes, quite. What do you wish of us?

SERGEANT FLUTTER: Understood, Ma'am!

SERGEANT FLUTTER: You must pace yourself! So long, little girl!

Instead of helping Mario climb Land's End, here the Sky Troopas are trying to murder Silver.

The sergeant uses a pattern of throwing a bomb for decent damage, then healing, then a turn of doing nothing.

If the soldiers are killed, new ones will fly in after several turns. They do minimal damage, so it's better to ignore them and just focus the sergeant down since he's somewhat dangerous.

Luckily, healing is cheap and only uses 2FP, so Silver can survive most situations despite her lower stats and offense.

She also still gains levels.

SYLVIA: But don't let that go to your stupid little head.

So yeah, our mother tried to disown and kill us, no big deal.

DARK DOOM's first fight is pretty simple, using only his trident to stab Silver for small damage.

I have a streak of misses early on, but otherwise this wasn't too terrible.

DARK DOOM: If you truly wish to prove yourself, you will fight me again!

Phase two adds a bomb attack that hits a bit harder.

Still no issue.

DARK DOOM: There's one more challenge ahead of you, lass! Fight me one more time! Then you may prove yourself as a true fighter!

This time DARK DOOM fights in his jet-black Super DOOM mode, and Dark Matter freaking hurts if you don't block it.

I stop for now, but don't worry, I'll take him down proper in the next update.

This takes us to Belome Temple...

...where Belome happens to be.

Oh, wait, I mean the embodiment of a nightmare that just happens to look like Belome. Easy mistake.

It shoots eggs and spits water at us, but it's no threat against us.

And thus Silver slaps her nightmares away.

NIGHTMARE: It's not over yet hot stuff! I'm stuck in your head forever. Farewell for now, Silver!

Well...alright, I guess?

Otherwise, we can make our way to this area, but I don't know how to get the key in Hometown besides maybe doing the Jumping 30/100 Times thing.

The scroll thing still works, but it looks like we can't go any farther into the temple, so with that we're pretty much done here.

Next time, we'll tackle the final update of this hack by tackling the final boss. Maybe everything will make sense once we hit the ending!

...Probably not, though.

Final Update - NO THIS CAN'T BE!

This door that required the Wonder Stone to unlock leads to the final boss.

The area changes considerably here...

...and with that, we've begun the final battle.

Music: Boss - Madame Silver

This is Madame Silver, the person whose memories we've been going through.

She starts off only using slaps, which deal some damage but nothing scary.

After dealing enough damage to her, she begins throwing out status effects like Terror and Mushroom, which are fun to deal with.

Her damage output also beefs up a bit, including some intense bomb action.

After losing enough HP, Silver uses Mega Recover, which also signals the end of the fight.

For you see...

...Silver has a second form.

Music: Boss - Queen Silver

It's a Valentina palette swap but hey.

Her basic attack is very quick so it's hard to block.

The scary thing though is her magic attacks, which hit hard. Diamond Saw is her worst one, but the other spells hit pretty hard too.

I know what to do now to win, but first, let's finish off the Dojo.

The trick for this battle is to heal whenever Silver's HP falls below 40. Dark Matter can be reduced, but I'm terrible at the timing.

It takes awhile, but it's more than manageable.

DARK DOOM: Great job lass. You are now the strongest fighter in this dojo. As such...you should take this!

Our reward for doing the dojo is the DOOM BELT.

DARK DOOM: Damon must work harder. You suggest an excercise? [sic]

The DOOM Belt is a massive buff to Attack and Defense. The buffs to the magic stats are marginal, but they're still a nice upgrade.

Anyway, with our belt of DOOM, let's give Silver another try.

The first phase goes much more smoothly between my heightened offense and her physical attacks being meaningless.

The higher defense is also nice for the Queen phase, but it's not as useful since most of her scary attacks are magic.

There's not much to say here. I just healed whenever I went under 70HP and threw physical attacks until I finally burned through her large HP pool.

And now, the payoff for this whole hack.

We literally beat the tits out of Silver.

And there she is, back to normal.

SILVER: WHAT? Jean? What are you doing here?

JEAN: HAW HAW! It seems that you have forgotten what you even prepared for.

SILVER: ! Did I say that? Mmmm.....

That's right, Mario showed Silver how to be a good person by...

...um...

...moving on!

SILVER: Jean! I have a question to ask you!

And with that, Silver has abandoned her plans for world domination thanks to Mario showing her how to be a good person, and thus she decides to marry Jean because, well, why not?

And of course this means the description that kickstarted this entire Let's Play...

quote:

“A relative of the Booster family, named Jean, has taken his father’s tower after his passing. Jean and his Snifits prepare as Mario enters his tower. Little does Mario realise, a queen named Silver is plotting domination over Mario’s world. Jean attempts to hide the plan but his Snifits reveal it out loud. Her powers are weak… but, she is gathering strength to prepare for what seems like domination. Mario obtains an item called the Wonder Stone which allow him to access Silver’s hometown, 15 years ago. Then they get together and Mario’s adventure comes to a close.”

...ended up spoiling the entire game. The story was there all along!

But they never ordered it!

?????: It's odd to think that such a girl as Silver can become one of the amazing saps to date! Jean, the Eight of the Booster family, has found what life really means to him and it's good.

Booster was an angel sent to guide us all along.

Yeah. Sure. OK.

We get a couple of quick ending cutscenes...

...including a bonus battle with Geno.

It goes as expected.

The parade seems to be modified a bit. For instance, Mario leads the parade instead of Luigi.

But otherwise a lot of the stuff plays out like the original.

At least until the credits softlock here. Oh well, good enough place to end things!

Overall, this hack has lived up to my expectations. The description made it seem goofy, and boy, was it! The balance was wonky, and the progression path is unintuitive at times, but overall I still have a positive impression on this hack. I certainly enjoyed being surprised by some of the more interesting decisions made, and I had fun seeing what insane decisions would pop up next. Props to Minus Bros., the person who made this hack, for providing such a fun experience.

Until next time!

I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.
Minus Bros. made another hack. I am not LPing it since it overhauls the entire game and the changes seem too minor to merit showing off, but it's worth mentioning.

quote:

“Luigi has been cursed by the demons of spirit and has been sent to purgatory to relive his brother’s past life due to his sins. Luigi travels through a gloomy, grey version of his brother’s world. He meets up with his girlfriend Daisy, King Bowser and finds two new companions by the name of Prince and Raino.”

It's basically a difficulty mod (though a seemingly mild one) with some minor story changes, where the entire game is mostly gray for one reason or another.
