Kyle Buchanan, New York Times posted:

Watching CATS is like stumbling upon an unholy and heretofore unknown genre of porn. Every time these horny fur demons tongue a milk bowl and start moaning I was certain the FBI would raid the theater.

Alison Willmore, Vulture posted:

Are the coats that some of the cats, like Macavity (Idris Elba) and Old Deuteronomy (Dench), wear actually made from the skin of other cats? And if so, does this mean that Jennyanydots, who at one point unzips herself out of a full-body fur suit, is a kind of Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs type?

Caspar Salmon, Prospect posted:

What does it mean to be jellicle? The closest we get to an answer comes when Cat Judi Dench snaps, 'You will never be my jellicle choice' at Cat Idris Elba, as he forces her to walk the plank on a barge on the Thames. But the problem with singling out absurdities or inconsistencies in Cats is that it only brings other problems to the fore. Yes, 'jellicle' means nothing — but then, why do some of the cats wear shoes? Why are they sometimes as big as a human and sometimes as big as a shopping bag? Why do some walk and some crawl? Why do they have necks but no anuses?"

Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies posted:

I felt the light inside me slowly fading.

Alex Cranz, Gizmodo posted:

Then Rebel Wilson unzipped herself and stepped out of her fursuit and proceeded to consume hundreds of tiny human/cockroach composites she trained to dance for her amusement. There's no coming back from that.

Just realizing that no one's made a thread about this waking nightmare yet. I went to a preview screening last night, so AMA?

Goddamn, I haven't seen a movie trigger such a visceral reaction from so many critics in a good while. It just goes on and on and on, and I love watching this dumpster fire:

Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm posted:

There is a thin line between idiocy and genius, and Cats pukes a hairball on it and rubs its rear end all over it.

Lena Wilson, The Playlist posted:

Once Tom Hooper's 110 minutes of Cats are over, theater is dead. One lucky Jellicle cat is dead. And we unchosen ones are left, tragically, to continue living.

Ty Burr, Boston Globe posted:

Oh God, my eyes.

Angie Han, Mashable posted:

I gasped with laughter, I covered my face, I pulled at my hair, I clasped my hands over my mouth to keep from screaming. Cats had broken me, and I'd never felt happier.
*This is a positive review!

Jamie East, The Sun posted:

It's a godforsaken terrible musical and now everyone is realizing it but also the absurdity of it all through all these years. So glad they are dumb and didn't fix how bonkers it is.

Just combine the two films; just as the Emperor is about to kill Luke, Vader stands up belting Memories as he throws the emperor (singing harmony that fades out as he falls)

My expectation for this movie is basically a real world "The Nightman Cometh" and I'm worried it won't live up to expectations.

inspired by but legally distinct from CATS (2019)
I'm trying to find the words to explain my experience of watching the film. It's impossible to actually describe the film, you see, for it has transcended language and understanding. Towards the end of the film, Judi Dench, who plays the queen of the cats, turns directly to the camera and sings about how we all understand cats now and don't need an interpreter anymore. But there is never any interpretation, there is only the grinding of cosmic shards against one another, there is only the sudden and bone-deep realization that we are all artificial, that reality itself simply does NOT cohere, and that we are all living paradoxes, trapped in between the emotional poles of joie de vivre, the depression of alienation, and pure, raw menace. At one point, the devil (who is a cat) drugs all of the good cats into an orgy that he might kidnap the queen of the cats. Logic and reason tear at the seems, space itself compresses into this abstract notion of distance, all touch becomes sensual, the cats frolic in the ruined remnants of a dead humanity. Characters enter the narrative, sing who they are, and then disappear. The camera doesn't care for the relationships between things, all it cares about is bodies in constant, frantic motion, always touching, always prowling, always consuming, until nothing remains but the motion itself as harbinger of days that shall never be.

anyway i give it a 7/10 would watch again

There are so many details about Cats that I love, but especially the fact there is a hierarchy of other animals with human shapes and faces (mice and cockroaches) who the cats feast on nonchalantly

As well, there’s a dog who chases some of the cats, but we never see his terrible face
