Divinity Original Sin 2: normally my playstyle in these things is to be thorough and do all quests long before I ever move on

but tutorial island gave me a black cat to escort to safety and no way to pick it up or otherwise direct it away from murderous guards

so I had the person it was following stand back while the rest of my crew murdered their way to the exit in a direct line and it's safe now. Now I can go back and do stuff.

Anyone in here played the Atelier series? What's the best one to start with?

e: From my research it seems to be Sophie due to being cheap + no time limit, but heck, what's the goon-sensus?

Thanks for the info on Ateliers! I'm probably not gonna pick them up immediately as they're not on sale, but I want to shuffle my wishlist right.

Also as the sale winds down I keep looking at Disco Elysium. Hmm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Sayonara Wild Hearts reminds me of Gris, in that it goes in heavy on the aesthetic and experience, and if that doesn't work for you, the entire game doesn't work.

Divinity Original Sin 2: christ, what a sequence

- found a herd of pigs permanently on fire that doesn't hurt them, but does panic them, and we can't help them yet
- attacked by a demon and some skeletons in a really tough encounter that made me work for a victory
- found a blinded magister panicked by a ruined caravan and he tried to arrest me, then wouldn't let me leave, and I had to kill him despite his obvious panic
- immediately afterwards found a scared bear cub that can't find its mom

The Atelier Dusk Trilogy is out on steam, and it's the DX edition with all the tweaks and improvements that weren't in the original game. I need to finish Sophie before I pick it up, but as I understand it, the Dusk Trilogy is one of the best starting points for the entire franchise. Each game in the trilogy is mostly standalone, but set in the same slowly dying world.

e: Let me be clear about what this game is: Chill item-focused jrpg that is slice of life in a slowly dying world, with a melancholy feel. I've never heard of anything like it. Most apocalypse fiction is about traumatic events or how to rebuild society, not quietly watching the world die.

Atelier is a series I've always wanted to check out but then panic about which one to start with and then end up buying something else. Repeat endlessly. I've heard Ryza's real good and the Dusk Trilogy is good too. Maybe if I stick it at the top of my wanted list and not deviate.

I started with Sophie because it was cheap, has no time limit, and is first of its respective trilogy...and now I'm in love and want more. Hence me being excited about Dusk! Gonna pick it up when I finish up the character events in Sophie and smash the final boss.

That said, Dusk has been recommended by the atelier series guide as one of the best starting points, period. It's self-contained, has the best semi-serious plot (still slice of life tho) and while it has a time limit, it's not difficult like the Arland games can be.

so omg, Recore is literally 3D Megaman. You're a lady exploring a failed(?) space colony planet with her robot dog friend, You shoot robots with charged shots, have a dash, and look for powerups and parts. I'm in love with it already.

I know the steam reviews say it involves backtracking and has some other issues, but the intro area was fast and smooth to play and I got to pull robot cores right out of them with a silly tug of war minigame so I'm already hooked.

CSD1: I don't remember
CSD2: I believe you could rebind things by recipe.
CSD3: uhh... it looks like you can't, though it seems to indicate that you can? I suspect that this is something missing from the game and will be added in the future.

It's interesting to think about for me, that I really loved nuXCOM but I've bounced off almost every other one that has been made, at least the more direct derivatives including XCOM 2. My gaming preferences have definitely undergone a wild shift in the last year or so but that one keeps puzzling me.

Bizarrely enough I've fallen most in love with the original X-COM, but modded with X-Piratez or X-COM Files. The original game got something right that's been very satisfying for me, and hasn't been replicated since. I have hopes for Xenonauts 2 though.
