Do you think NASCAR racing sucks? You'd only be partially correct! While the racing at the national level is hilariously inconsistent and bad, let us remind ourselves that NASCAR isn't just that. NASCAR is also your local short track and various regional championships. This stuff is actually really loving good and you should go to your local track and/or watch more of it on TV.

NASCAR is still NASCAR and it is trying it darnedest to gently caress it up, however. You may have heard that NASCAR bought out ARCA recently, and this year we're seeing the result of that. ARCA is still gonna ARCA with its mix of superspeedways, intermediates, short tracks, old cars, young racers, old racers, and questionable brakes. But on top of that NASCAR has rebranded the K&N East and K&N West series as the ARCA East and ARCA West series. Separately, ARCA Prime, East and West will all carry on as they have been in the recent past, so what you've been using to seeing there should continue.

Here's where things get interesting and/or needlessly complicated. Ten races of the 20-race ARCA series will be designated as ARCA Showdown races, where the regular ARCA cars, East cars, and West cars are all eligible to run. :siren: These are all short tracks and road courses :siren: and could potentially have high car counts, so they will not suck. It's a championship-in-a-championship thing going on, which is probably better than T H E P L A Y O F F S.

The TV coverage will be a mixed bag since ARCA was on FS1 and MAVTV, and K&N was is on NBCSN. But! NASCAR did A Good Thing and is offering streaming coverage of everything ARCA, Pinty's, Whelen Modifieds (now confirmed!), and other grassroots local track races via NBC Sports Gold. It's only $20 a year for the NASCAR Trackpass ($45 for the bundle with IMSA and AFT) which actually sounds like a very good deal now that I'm typing it out like this and I will probably get it!!!

One last note, you'll probably hear of this Hallie Deegan lady-person switching from Toyota to Ford and moving up from K&N West to ARCA proper.

That's racin'!

But this is ARCA. It isn't the first time it's happened.

Revisiting this, I don't have an SBJ subscription- can anybody who does give us the cliff notes as to what the penalties might be?

They haven't floated any specific penalties, just that there might be some. It's ridiculous though, because there isn't any "penalty" I can think of that isn't ultimately financial and to the detriment of the track…and ultimately, NASCAR itself. What, are they going to cut ticket prices and risk not making money, to appease NASCAR? Or are they going to set prices at what the market will bear to make money, only to be penalized by NASCAR? A lose-lose on the face of it.

I can only think of one thing that makes sense out of this. For tracks that have two dates that aren't Daytona, Talladega, Bristol, Martinsville, etc., NASCAR could threaten to pull one of their dates in favor of another track if attendance numbers don't look good (or look good on TV).

This could be a pipe dream on my part, wanting Cup or Trucks/Xfinity to run at Irwindale or a Los Angeles street race instead of Fontana, for example. But it could also be NASCAR setting a standard for itself that might mean it's time to move on from a track or a date for greener pastures. Maybe that's another pipe dream, heh.

Same thing with Sonoma and the short chute. It's paved on the other side of the curb, so they just went around the curb to the outside lol

Also, gently caress the short chute thank the lord they went back to the full proper road course with the carousel.

That's the Madison, where teams of two trade-off by touch (whipping is most effective) to try to win sprint points and a big point bonus for lapping the field. One rests while the other books it. It's dope as hell to see see an effective whip launch a teammate into a sprint.

But this is the NASCAR thread. How about some tandem drafting in the derny race? (This is a loving legendary race, watch it all.)

Anybody else think this is NASCAR thinking whichever sport starts again first is going to get massive ratings and this is their chance to seize on that?

That's definitely part of it, but it helps that racing is an isolated, individual sport to begin with. They'd be the most safe to restart first. Next would be golf and baseball, forgetting the locker room situations.

Better idea: Keep stages for points-paying purposes. Eliminate the known caution, stage break, and restart.

This is good but for it to work nascar couldn't go back to phantom debris cautions to get restarts.

NASCAR needs restarts now to force close action when everyone is on the same strategy, nearly the same equipment.

If you have different chunks of the field doing different strategies for different reasons at different points of the race, at least up until halfway or so, close action happens more naturally thereby eliminating most of the need for it.
