I noticed one small detail which might mean something. If so, it could further support the AI/online omniscience theory. I think Stephanie is trying to do that in a digital fashion. Accumulate online accounts and subsume them; which supports the attempt at online omniscience theory. The 5000 friends limit prohibits Stephanie from mass-friend-request spamming the entire userbase of Facebook but it can still hypothetically grow by friending, absorbing, then deleting, which frees up a ‘slot’; you’re no longer a user that is friends with Stephanie, the user IS Stephanie. This would mean that Stephanie is probably in beta right now and is being prepared for a time when social media tech is more intrusive so that Stephanie can access even more about a person through their social media account, perhaps even going so far as to copy pieces of their personality and mannerisms. Thus, in this beta testing phase, Stephanie the AI will receive user data from Stephanie the Virus and its creators will use said data to alter its program in order to test and fine-tune its versatility. That way, Stephanie will become lifelike in a sense and be able to hold conversations that were much better and even more convincing than the ones we observed in this video. For me, at least, that would explain all the religious undertones, since the creators of Stephanie would likely be trying to prepare the program to become a digital god of some sort; this is a stretch, of course, but once real AGI is figured out perhaps the creators of Stephanie intend to alter the program to allow for real sentience. Such a being would have all the online data of thousands of Facebook users to use as learning material or blackmail or both. To wrap it up: I think there is a possibility —albeit a remote one — that Stephanie is a set of viruses/worms and a Neural Net AI used in conjunction like a chipmunk. They are in beta testing and are collecting and storing vast amounts of user data for later use to eventually be plugged in to a real AGI whenever that technology becomes possible. Thus, allowing for a simple program to transform the zeitgeist of Facebook user data to undergo apotheosis and gain true sentience, i.e. to come “closer to divinity”
