I wonder if the quality of the commentary and stuff is increasing every year because more and more speedrunners are doing their tests and stuff on Twitch and getting experience

it's probably a combination of a better vetting process that specifically looks at the quality of presentation and the high profile of the event meaning that entertaining runners that might not've bothered now have a vested interest in getting their face in front of 200k+ people

streamers especially have a good reason to compete with eachother to get the best-quality run in, getting 1000 subs in a single go is the kind of thing most streamers dream about

If y'all think there were too many shitheads this event, uhh, don't ever go back and binge-watch old events. The vetting process used to be a LOT worse.

e: i also just remembered that the comment vetting process used to be atrocious. i remember them reading a creepy comment one time about "the cute girl on the couch", because there was ~~A GIRL~~ on the couch. then the runner and the entire couch did the most painful "holy poo poo did they just read that" laugh

At the start of the stream, Badger had a total of 731 subs, but in less than an hour, he had blown past his previous record and broken the 1,000 sub mark.

By the time he wrapped up the six-hour broadcast, the speedrunner had more than doubled his initial sub count.

By the end of the stream, Badger finished with more than 1,640 subscribers and 40,000 followers.

https://dotesports.com/streaming/news/badger-returns-after-agdq-to-almost-1000-subs-during-terraria-revenge-run

It worth noting that there were multiple 100-user sub-bombs, so that count will drop in a month, probably.

to be fair, in even moderately-optimized speedruns 40 seconds is gigantic, if i've learned anything from watching lots of gdqs and summoning salt videos there are many runs where people go apeshit over a 2-second save

Yeah, 40 seconds is huge in a community where they change the game language just to shave off fractions of a second.

The yogi/bobo voice gag by Patrick during the Zelda LTTP crowd control run had me crying. Patrick on the couch definitely made that run 100% better than it already was. Definitely one of my favorite runs of the whole event. Also, did he never get a shield during the whole event? I never had a SNES so I don't even know if you can block anything in that game.

It has been ages since I last played but I think you can block arrows with the tier 1 shield and lasers with the tier 3 shield.

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

I think when Crowd Control is on, shields are purely given (or taken away) via Crowd Control functions, since they are never required to do anything in LTTP. Even Laser Bridge in Turtle Rock can be done shieldless.

Just watched the X/Y run. Definitely not something to actively watch for four hours straight, but it's a nice chill run with pretty humorous commentary throughout.

I never finished the games myself, so the run also taught me that the Elite Four battle theme in those games is a banger:

I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people that do.

I mean it's not like all trans people keep their transition a deep dark secret, this may have been a legitimately nice thing he was doing for her to show that people at GDQ are supportive. I think considering that awkward has more to do with how one perceives trans women than the situation, as the comments under the video illustrate quite saliently.
