not long after the two leads finally kiss it suddenly abandons having any real plot and becomes only the disconnected slice of life vignettes that were previously less of a focus. it's still gay though but not as directly. i've heard this was because they ran into trouble trying to publish physical copies specifically due to the kiss scene and china's media censorship rules.

ToxicFrog posted:It's not really manga but I just finally finished reading Always Human and it so impossibly cute and gay and comfy, I ended up crying into my keyboard like six times but in a good way. Aerial Magic is only half complete and will never be finished due to writer's block and didn't really go anywhere, it's hard to recommend. Bloom Into You is absolutely a classic though

https://twitter.com/haginomakoto/status/1099948966492262400 this is where she apparently said its not yuri, i saw people give vague translations that she was saying she doesn't consider it yuri and it's just about friendship between girls, but she doesn't mind if people interpret it as yuri. my japanese is nowhere near good enough to say how accurate that is though but if that is accurate then im not personally getting my hopes up about them actually kissing or anything lol. i definitely misremembered how definite it seemed though its extremely gay regardless

the "its just friendship between girls" part was what made me think that it becoming more directly romantic isn't too likely, more than the "not yuri" part

Endorph posted:i am not accusing you of anything since we all get second/third hand information telephone gamed to us sometimes, but my guess is that someone - who has the stereotypical western view of 'all lesbian manga is 'yuri' - saw the author saying that they don't want to call it yuri, and editorialized it as 'they're saying its not gay,' and people took that as gospel. now that the creator hasn't more directly ruled it out i will also be a little disappointed if they don't kiss lol

i think its easier to say with that manga that viewing hiura as directly trans is a fairly obvious possible reading

https://mangadex.org/title/40317/ore-ga-watashi-ni-naru-made this is surprisingly good about growing up with gender issues, much better than i would have thought from the description & premise

i didn't say it was a 'trans-inclusive' story and obviously it isn't directly about the real world experience of being trans, but there's enough similarities that i as a trans person got a lot out of it, certainly much more than from most genderswap stories. it's not really about like, wish fulfilment, either, it's more that akira's experiences are pretty relatable to me, even if they're not always in the same direction gender-wise as mine. there's straight up gender dysphoria, feeling alienated from both genders due to ending up in an awkward in-between of sorts, struggles to adjust to a new gender presentation, general identity issues, etc. there's a lot more there than a ham-fisted "bullying is bad!" which is all i expected from the premise and didn't really think it would have anything interesting or relatable to say about gender at all

i feel like it's sort of a cop out for the dad to come around relatively easily just from the mum saying "look i read some books. lgbt is a real thing!" but i guess they want a happy ending and everything

i would not bother watching WEP if what you're after is good or interesting trans representation the only trans character is a trans boy who only appears for a single episode to recount the horrible abuse they faced and it really does tread into 'misery porn' territory there's another character who struggles with their gender presentation but i really don't read her as trans at all and if she was intended to be it's clear the show would have shouted it out loud. her character is just she's a tomboy/"school prince" etc. who wants to be more feminine but feels conflicted bc she gets a lot of positive attention for her androgynous appearance. it's just a strange, very messy show that doesn't really pull off anything it tries to do despite an excellent first episode lih fucked around with this message at 16:32 on Apr 3, 2021 |

Thuryl posted:I was considerably less positive on that bit because my read on it was that all of that stuff wasn't literally depicting Momoe as trans but was attempting to equate the struggles of a probably-straight cis girl who's frustrated that girls keep crushing on her with those of a trans boy facing corrective rape. there's too much stuff from earlier episodes that doesn't really fit with Momoe being trans, and tbh the whole "handsome girl at an all-girls' school who gets treated as a substitute for a boy" archetype being used unexamined for her would be pretty weird if she is meant to be trans yeah this was my take too i get why people at first interpreted her as possibly trans because the show was very vague about what her deal actually was at first but as it went on that interpretation increasingly made no sense to me

i guess i mean the depression stuff is somewhat relatable but like less in a "wow she really understands it and this makes me feel less alone in the world way" and more of a "this makes me really sad for her" way. even with the optimistic tone towards the end of each of her works (that i've read anyway idk about the most recent one) it just makes me really hope she can find or has found more of a support network to help her manage just being alive better. i don't really find it that uplifting or funny at all, it's just so raw and uncomfortable. i'm glad other people can get something out of it though i guess
