Bi guy (masc but okay with any pronouns). I'm also a massive nerd, so I bought an essay collection on Boy Love manga and gender representation.

As a Euro who watched Gundam Wing in 2000, can confirm.

In the gundam thread someone shared a girls magazine ranking chart of favourite/hottest anime characters from 1978 to the early 2000s

Lot of Gundam boys on here, and Wing dominates in the year it came out.

So i have a love/hate/hate/hate affair with anime and lgbt stuff. I think the only like solid queer tv animes ive seen are No.6 and Given? And maybe cause im too tired of really god awful anime to find anything else? Mind you, its what ive seen. Im sure theres more but... like most seem to really solidly misrepresent or just create a lot of weirdness around the issue of queer characters.

In terms of mainstreamish anime I remember watching a show called Love stage (something like that), it was a quirky romance comedy with bits of drama about two male actors falling love. As a show I remember it being a bit average, side characters were one note and often annoying, though the main couple did get together in a relationship before the show ended and had some nice moments about how to make a same sex relationship work. Nothing stood out to me as problematic, but it has been a few years.

That's really it for the more mainstream non porn stuff I can think of. I know there are some more examples including the other suggestions, but yeah its still a niche area.

Well, Netflix had a series called Goku dolls, which I watched in its entirety out of sheer confusion, I still don't know what to think about it, but that's pretty mainstream for better or worse.

Also, I'm sure someone might know what this manga I read a while back but it was basically a kinda BL manga where it was an all boys school but a bunch of students crossdressed because of one reason or another? I started reading it a long time ago but didn't get far and forgot the name and was interested in checking it out again to see if it was good, and it does seem relevant considering the earlier talk about otome danshi.

Sounds like Princess Princess, tho its not really BL but more heavily implied. Its more of a comedy manga, tho the anime does have a pretty BL ending sequence. Then again its been ages since I read it (was my first non-shonen thing so I could have forgotten some things.

I thought it sounded like Princess Princess too, I never got round to reading it, but I did read the Day of Revolution by the same author. In Day one of the main characters is in Princess too, but he becomes the boyfriend of the protagonist of Day whose intersex and transitioned as a girl*. I read it years ago like 06, but aside from the premise Day was an okay light humour manga that poked fun at gender norms and :biotruths:

*According to an omake page the author didn't know intersex people were real and thought she'd made up a wacky premise to make her shoujo comedy series stand out. Until she received thank you letters from intersex fans which caused her to make an apology declaration in case she caused offence unwittingly.

And yeah, while I have soft spot for Day and stuff like it, stuff from that period 99-03 usually just flirted with non het stuff a bit and had a few jokes. I think its interesting that the manga that revolved around an intersex character and a transition was originally conceived as a "isn't life strange" gimmick. Though I'm pleased intersex readers at least found it comforting and the author responded positively.

Anyway, I breezed through Liberta, a web manga about a put upon office worker and her gothie vampire heroine who sweeps her off her feet, kills monsters and beats up harassing managers.

Yeah. For better or worse most of the stuff brought up in this thread is the product of an author who put their own thoughts in the story rather than a corporation trying to check boxes. Like even if Fate is a huge franchise now the original game was made independently by a roleplaying DM and his artist friend who was convinced he was the best writer ever

That last part is framed in a way it implies that he is not in fact the best writer ever.

Decided to finally read Welcome to the NHK over the weekend after stalling on it for years. Its an interesting look and social anxieties and non conformity, and can be bleak as gently caress at times. Don't know how I feel about the ending.

Towards the end of the run a minor character whose been in a miserable and toxic relationship realises the source of a lot of her issues is that she's attracted to women and has been trying really hard to pursue straight relationships and decides to quit forcing heterosexuality on herself. She does a lot better after that.

And one of the main characters runs into a trans woman during a depressive spiral and in desperation to redeem himself gets a job at a host club to help her pay for surgery. Its not treated as a joke just an unexpected turn of events. He was doing it out of a sense of pity which she calls him out over, so its not perfect, but it is an example of a misfit with extreme issues with relationships and women trying to be better by showing some empathy for others.

I appreciate LGBT anime fans cause I don’t know many and I want to splurge all about the anime I love. I normally tend to prefer Slice of Life and comedies like Kaguya, Lucky Star, Haruhi and Bakarina when normal Shonen anime is mainstream so I have no one to talk to about it :smith:.

Sup,

I think Lucky Star and Haruhi got me into anime too if you don't count watching German dubbed 80s/90s SF ova's and French co-productions. I remember reading the omake to a Lucky Star volume where the author talks about going to a convention and getting marriage proposals from male fans. He seemed confused that a series that heavily baited a same sex relationship would have a queer following. I think my frustration with how that relationship simply refused to develop also led me to look up fan fiction and DJ's.

I've been adding most of the recs to my backlog, I'm currently re-reading Ooku: The Inner Chamber, about life in the Tokugawa Shogunate's harem in an alternate universe where a plague wiped out most of the men in Japan so women came to dominate society and treat men mostly how women were/are treated in this world. Its incredibly detailed historically and in artwork, and it gets into gender politics and features male homosexual relationships both toxic and romantic.

I'm also reading the manga Lady Snowblood, its a revenge manga set during the Meiji restoration, it was created in the 70s and inspired two pinky violence exploitation films so its depictions of sex and violence are iffy though oddly informative and should come with several CWs the plot revolves around a gang rape to start with, but it is a dark action story about societies seedy underbelly that also shows wlw scenes and commentary on gender politics to go with the commentary on corruption, nationalism and authority.

Nickelodeon also had a loving and stable same sex couple that was being haunted and annoyed by the ghost of a girl whose a stereotypical fujoshi, that was kinda funny.

the artist (not writer) of lady snowblood did a straight trans story in the 70s that apparently achieved a lot of mainstream popularity.

gently caress, :( this happens a lot. It's gotten better, but I'm stilled kinda bummed out that a lot of the really cool and sexually liberating manga from the 60s and 70s remains forgotten.

Lady Snowblood owns if you blood and gratuitous sex and other exploitation movie tropes aren't a problem for you. If it is a problem then the sequel movie cuts out most of the sex, all of the sexual violence and replaces them with a surprisingly meaty political thriller about the Meiji era secret police trying to smash the Japanese anarchist movement and drive the poor out of Tokyo. It's a very socially conscious film where the beautiful and tough as nails lead cuts down dozens of murderous and corrupt police with her sword while framed in beautiful sunlight.

Added to the list, angry middle aged homophobes is what got me to check out that She-ra cartoon and it was pretty good.

In the dark days of the mid-2000s I had a really hard time finding Bl manga, most of the links took me to comment sections full homophobia. I remember one of the few times I found an actual translated DJ it was a light One Piece fic were they held hands and kissed. But the scanlator had done it as a commission and the page it was on had a massive "no homo" rant about how this was just an obligation and how uncomfortable it was to do etc.

Anyway, haven't read much managa besides a few chapters of Basara but I played Disaster Report 4, and that lets you play as a lesbian or bisexual if you chose to play as a woman*, with some limited romantic options, they don't go very far but its nice not to be rail roaded into heterosexuality in a game that's all about figuring out yourself while surviving an earthquake. And you can dress up in all sorts of clothes and cosplays, including elf ears and ninja outfits, or fast food workers.

*Haven't played as a man so I don't know if they're allowed to be non het.

For me homo is an outdated slur in English I never hear outside of re-runs of films from the tubular 90s, and in another language I speak the word (same pronunciation) it just means human. So now it just sort of confuses me every time I see it in English where the fashion isn't skater dude terrible.

YT recs started getting good for once

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PuBb6AIbCs

After watching this for the 20th time I tracked down scans of the manga, there are some issues but for the early 80s its surprisingly solid so far. The most problematic elements aren't meanspirited they're played for comedy with the stuffy social conservative family members being the but of the jokes.

Think I recall watching a video essay on it and trans representation in manga awhile ago but don't recall much of what was said.
I guess it was this one since I liked it
