In the gundam thread someone shared a girls magazine ranking chart of favourite/hottest anime characters from 1978 to the early 2000s  Lot of Gundam boys on here, and Wing dominates in the year it came out.

Nothing stood out to me as problematic, but it has been a few years. That's really it for the more mainstream non porn stuff I can think of. I know there are some more examples including the other suggestions, but yeah its still a niche area. Well, Netflix had a series called Goku dolls, which I watched in its entirety out of sheer confusion, I still don't know what to think about it, but that's pretty mainstream for better or worse. Decided to finally read Welcome to the NHK over the weekend after stalling on it for years. Its an interesting look and social anxieties and non conformity, and can be bleak as gently caress at times. Don't know how I feel about the ending. Towards the end of the run a minor character whose been in a miserable and toxic relationship realises the source of a lot of her issues is that she's attracted to women and has been trying really hard to pursue straight relationships and decides to quit forcing heterosexuality on herself. She does a lot better after that. And one of the main characters runs into a trans woman during a depressive spiral and in desperation to redeem himself gets a job at a host club to help her pay for surgery. Its not treated as a joke just an unexpected turn of events. He was doing it out of a sense of pity which she calls him out over, so its not perfect, but it is an example of a misfit with extreme issues with relationships and women trying to be better by showing some empathy for others.

If you have a smartphone theres a cool opensource comics/manga reader valled Tachiyomi on the f-droid store. It has plugins for a lot of online sites without advertising and it automatically chooses the best layout for your screen.

Its incredibly detailed historically and in artwork, and it gets into gender politics and features male homosexual relationships both toxic and romantic. I'm also reading the manga Lady Snowblood, its a revenge manga set during the Meiji restoration, it was created in the 70s and inspired two pinky violence exploitation films so its depictions of sex and violence are iffy though oddly informative and should come with several CWs the plot revolves around a gang rape to start with, but it is a dark action story about societies seedy underbelly that also shows wlw scenes and commentary on gender politics to go with the commentary on corruption, nationalism and authority.

I remember one of the few times I found an actual translated DJ it was a light One Piece fic were they held hands and kissed. But the scanlator had done it as a commission and the page it was on had a massive "no homo" rant about how this was just an obligation and how uncomfortable it was to do etc. Anyway, haven't read much managa besides a few chapters of Basara but I played Disaster Report 4, and that lets you play as a lesbian or bisexual if you chose to play as a woman*, with some limited romantic options, they don't go very far but its nice not to be rail roaded into heterosexuality in a game that's all about figuring out yourself while surviving an earthquake. And you can dress up in all sorts of clothes and cosplays, including elf ears and ninja outfits, or fast food workers. *Haven't played as a man so I don't know if they're allowed to be non het.

For me homo is an outdated slur in English I never hear outside of re-runs of films from the tubular 90s, and in another language I speak the word (same pronunciation) it just means human. So now it just sort of confuses me every time I see it in English where the fashion isn't skater dude terrible.

YT recs started getting good for once https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PuBb6AIbCs After watching this for the 20th time I tracked down scans of the manga, there are some issues but for the early 80s its surprisingly solid so far. The most problematic elements aren't meanspirited they're played for comedy with the stuffy social conservative family members being the but of the jokes. Think I recall watching a video essay on it and trans representation in manga awhile ago but don't recall much of what was said.
