If you accidentally resized VLC a little, that would cause it to apply a scaling filter to the video and even a less than 1% size change would cause the file size to bloat. Check the resolution of one of the old shots vs one of your new ones.

Maybe check the encoding on the video? If your recording or encoding software decided to change the encoder on you to something lossy, it could've resulted in some artifacting. Also check the bitrate on your recordings, make sure that hasn't changed.
