I'm just a sick guy, I'm really just a dirty guy.
finished my reread of The Jungle. Marija's path really affected me a lot more this time around. I guess the first time I read it I didn't really grasp what she had gone through in comparison to Jurgis, but reading the scenes at the beginning of the book with the wedding and her nonstop dancing juxtaposed with her loss of strength at the end was supremely heartbreaking to get through.

Finished the book this morning, and drat, it was good. I wasn't expecting it to be so vibrant and visceral, and I felt myself getting pretty upset by how little has changed, in terms of the structure of society. Someday, I hope, Chicago will be ours! One thing that got a little old for me was the structure of certain chapters: "A marvellous opportunity/excellent luck!" -> "Things are going well, maybe this time it'll be okay" -> "Oh poo poo gently caress gently caress poo poo" -> "Wailing and misery and poverty and loss" over and over again. Sinclair certainly wasn't a subtle writer when it came to depicting hardship. I really liked it though. I'm glad it led to at least some reforms, even if it didn't usher in the socialist utopia Sinclair hoped for.

Keep thinking about this all the time. I’ll likely reread this again.
