So, what's this about? Final Fantasy IV: Free Enterprise, to quote the website: "...is an open-world romhack and scavenger hunt randomizer for Final Fantasy IV for the SNES (originally released in English as Final Fantasy II)". The basics functions of the hack are: 1.) Key plot maguffins are thrown about in various locations where they were not normally obtained (e.g. you might get the Package from Luca, or the Legend sword from the Antlion) 2.) Characters are randomized. You might start was Edward and Porom, or find Kain on the way up Mt. Ordeals 3.) You start with the Enterprise (hence the name), so you're free to go anywhere in the overworld that the airship can access normally. ...What's the point of that? The results of the randomizer are....fairly hilarious sometimes. Of course, they are downright cruel sometimes, too. The RNGod giveth, the RNGod taketh away.... Is it totally random? Well, it's as random as you want it to be! There are a butt-ton of combinations you can set the randomizer to, from limiting what party members you will be able to recruit over the course of the run, to specific victory conditions, to what items the shops carry....there's a lot, okay? You can check out everything there is to offer from the official website: http://ff4fe.com/ What's your plan with this? Myself and Dewgy are planning a few variations of runs. they are 1.) Straight randomized, finish the game the"traditional" way (beat the final boss) 2.) Running with various win conditions that DO NOT involve beating the final boss (there are several alternative win conditions that we can explore) 3.) Specific-character runs (the thread name is a hint....God help us all....) ...and how are we involved? If you feel like it, you can play along at home! I will be sure to include the flag string and seed number for each run--that way, you can create the same randomized game we are playing and experience what we're doing first hand Also, we'll be entertaining thread requests for run criteria. It could be as simple as one modification, or as complex as the entire setup. If you have a request, put it in BOLD please. Dewgy or I will keep track of what's asked for, and we'll try and cobble together some of them Sounds fun drat straight. This has been a really fun mod to see evolve over time too. We’ve been doing trial runs of this for a while now, and they keep improving the site, the options, and the randomizer itself to stop no-win states and the like. It’s such a good concept and really well done, puts a ton of replay value into FF4’s world and systems.

I've subscribed to the Youtube account for Free Enterprise and I'm still on my way through the World Series. Getting through Edward% as you made this, so I'm excited to see if you check out some of their ideas to make it a little easier on yourselves! FE is my favorite randomizer ever, so I'm looking forward to this!

A significant chunk of last year was spent watching FE runs, and also in getting way back into not just FF4 but TAY... so maybe FE is evil.

Edward in general is actually really good if you know how to use him-- hide allows for cheese strats of a lot of different bosses (including Zeromus) and give him a bow and he's very good. I've always been a big advocate for him, even without the spoon flag active, which, well. Well. I'm a mid-tier racer and semi-regular commentator (though I've stepped back a little from that lately) on races, so I can answer questions about competitive strategy, if anyone's curious. I can also talk about the best strat in the game: quintzerk.

Well, we're finally at the starting line! Give it up for the #YangGang! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W3-yGvFspc Looks like this might be a fairly friendly seed thus far. I'm hoping I can get some higher-powered replacements in soon, but it'll do for now. ...also funnier this way, too, until I run into Golbez or some other stupidly powerful boss that wrecks my day (which almost happens here!)

Looks like it's going well so far. The last topic got me interested in Free Enterprise, but I didn't give it a shot myself. Until now. Cecil, Tellah, Cecil, Rosa, Cid. With Edward hanging out in the Underground waterway.

So is the mod kind/smart enough to not spawn an unwinnable seed? As in, not putting a key item behind a door you need that item to get through. Like the Earth Crystal behind Zot.

Weeble posted:So is the mod kind/smart enough to not spawn an unwinnable seed? I think I ran into one of those a LOT of versions ago, but I'm pretty sure that you can finish* anything it generates *"finish" might not be the correct word, but the progression of key items allows for a path to victory, at least. If you, say, run into Wyvern and Ogopogo early, you might not get too far.... Of course, that's not possible with the safety check on, but....what fun are safety checks?

Weeble posted:So is the mod kind/smart enough to not spawn an unwinnable seed? Yeah, it won't ever cause a softlock due to key item placement. It is possible to place yourself into an unwinnable situation through other means like being gated by bosses you can't hope to kill, but you've got to go well out of your way to actually set that.

So do you have to teach the summons to each Rydia, or do they spread through the Rydia hivemind so that once one Rydia learns a summon, all Rydias know it? Also, I eagerly await when you find a shop selling Bahamut and buy it, considering that the first thing you did when you got Rydia was teach her Bahamut, and then 30 seconds later started talking about wanting to find Bahamut to teach her. Or are there two summons that Baham could be? Honest question, I haven't played FFIV in a long time.

I don't know why you guys are so surprised at Yang's wife giving you the package, she just meant for you to deliver it to those sylph hussies that her husband was two-timing on her with. Also, with the randomizer being able to double up on characters, I wish it had a way to do alternate sprites rather than just alternate palates. Wife instead of Yang, Black Mage and White Mage instead of Palom and Porom, Golbez instead of Cecil, Lucca instead of Cid! ...okay, that's all I got for Sprite swaps. Though the alternate palates are nice at least.

All those dead ends in the Sealed Cave just make think back to all the dead end rooms in the actual FFII. Those spawned you into the middle of the room and had increased encounter rates. Also: Putting the Heroine Robes on your two mages is not a good idea. It neuters their magic. It's a piece of armor designed for meme stuff like a whip-wielding physically oriented Rydia. It's Eblan(a), not Elban(a). There are even on-screen labels! Thanks for this playthrough; FFIV was my first FF and is probably still my favorite, warts and all. It's what inspired me to become a translator (surprisingly, not because of the wonky translation) and sparked my dream of working for Square Enix, which did eventually come true. I'm torn now between playing my own randomized game and just playing the vanilla game through yet again; the more I see of your playthrough, though, the closer I inch to a random run.
