So, what's this about? Final Fantasy IV: Free Enterprise, to quote the website: "...is an open-world romhack and scavenger hunt randomizer for Final Fantasy IV for the SNES (originally released in English as Final Fantasy II)". The basics functions of the hack are: 1.) Key plot maguffins are thrown about in various locations where they were not normally obtained (e.g. you might get the Package from Luca, or the Legend sword from the Antlion) 2.) Characters are randomized. You might start was Edward and Porom, or find Kain on the way up Mt. Ordeals 3.) You start with the Enterprise (hence the name), so you're free to go anywhere in the overworld that the airship can access normally. ...What's the point of that? The results of the randomizer are....fairly hilarious sometimes. Of course, they are downright cruel sometimes, too. The RNGod giveth, the RNGod taketh away.... Is it totally random? Well, it's as random as you want it to be! There are a butt-ton of combinations you can set the randomizer to, from limiting what party members you will be able to recruit over the course of the run, to specific victory conditions, to what items the shops carry....there's a lot, okay? You can check out everything there is to offer from the official website: http://ff4fe.com/ What's your plan with this? Myself and Dewgy are planning a few variations of runs. they are 1.) Straight randomized, finish the game the"traditional" way (beat the final boss) 2.) Running with various win conditions that DO NOT involve beating the final boss (there are several alternative win conditions that we can explore) 3.) Specific-character runs (the thread name is a hint....God help us all....) ...and how are we involved? If you feel like it, you can play along at home! I will be sure to include the flag string and seed number for each run--that way, you can create the same randomized game we are playing and experience what we're doing first hand Also, we'll be entertaining thread requests for run criteria. It could be as simple as one modification, or as complex as the entire setup. If you have a request, put it in BOLD please. Dewgy or I will keep track of what's asked for, and we'll try and cobble together some of them Sounds fun drat straight. I'm torn now between playing my own randomized game and just playing the vanilla game through yet again; the more I see of your playthrough, though, the closer I inch to a random run. That's a pretty awesome progression! I would also recommend going for a random run. The guys working on this have pretty much created a whole new experience for this. Mind you, the plot is toast in this version, but it adds a whole bunch of new challenges to the game. We'll be exploring more of those options in later runs with this thread. Hirayuki posted:I looked up the effect of Cry on a Japanese wiki. The original battle message mentioned confusing the enemy, but the wiki notes that they don't seem to be Confused (with a capital C: fighting one another). A strategy guide suggests it unsettles the enemy so they're more likely to run; not only does this seem to be false, it doesn't make it easier for you to run, either. There's a theory that it temporarily lowers the enemy level, in effect, which would make them more likely to run, but since enemies don't flee when there's a big level gap between the two sides, the author suspects that the mention of getting confused/flustered may be a relic of a feature that went unused in the end. Or it's there to carry on the tradition of Fear and Scare in earlier FF titles, if in name only. Well, drat. I would think that its a leftover from the NES FF games where you could get enemies to run from you. ...which leads into a really comical ending for the original game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTOUOeec4Qc&t=4765s Granted, its a TAS, so not something that's really feasible in real time. Instead of forging the Excalibur, like normak, Kokkol makes the Crystal Giant%, where the game ends upon finishing the Giant of Bab-il Fiends%, where the game ends upon being all of the Elementals (BOTH Milon and Milon Z, Kainazzo, Valvalis, Rubicant, & The 4 Fiends combined fight). Of course, their locations will be randomized in this.... Dark Matter Hunt, where we would need to find 30 our of 45 pieces of Dark Matter scattered in chests around the game world. The connection is more explicit with FF1, where the boss of that name has multiple pairs of arms and weapons to match. FF9 also has the similar concept of the many-armed Maliris (?) which references the marilith from AD&D 2E, I guess because they didn't want the mythology connection to be too obvious? It's just a game of telephone because AD&D was in turn referencing Hindu mythology. Well, mistranslation is certainly not outside the realm of possibility here, given the slew of other things that fall into that camp. It's as good a theory as any!

So, with Run #2 in the books, we're going to move to another Alternate Win Scenario: The Dark Matter Hunt! In this, there are 45 chests populated around the game world with Dark Matter in them. In order to finish the flag, we have to find 30 of them and take them to Kory in Agart to finish the objective. What we need from you guys is the following: 1.) Another objective (see list below for options) and 2.) One optional other flag to add (see the list here) The other alternate objective list is pretty long. Here's the list, boiled down to simpler terms (see the link above to see everything spelled out for you) -Find a specific character -Defeat a specific boss (i.e. Defeat the Mist Dragon, Defeat Golbez, etc.) -Finish specific dungeons (i.e. Defeat the boss of the Mist Cave, Liberate Baron Castle, etc.) -Complete specific plot moments (i.e. destroy Mist, Use the SandRuby, etc.) OR if you're feeling indecisive, you can vote for the seed to randomly generate objectives from this list! Note that "defeat the mist dragon" and "defeat the boss of the Mist cave" will most likely end up being two different thing because of the randomization. Votes in BOLD, please. We'll take the top 5 vote getters. Voting closes at noon EDT on the 15th!
