Mr. Fowl posted:Seems kinda lame that they're slobbering about Mr Number 1 and Maple is the one they're worried about. Makes me think the devs are dumb nerds who hate fun. That struck me as odd too at first, but I suspect the issue is somewhat similar to why land destruction in Magic the gathering is not a viable archetype anymore- it’s no fun to play against. Maple’s build is also based on unique items and a super difficult to get skill. If they were really serious about nerfing her, they would patch hydra eater to scale with the user’s level to a maximum limit of the hydra’s level (or lower), as well as putting increasing poison resistance up to full immunity or even poison healing on first bosses, then regular enemies. Payne probably plays in a more standard way, where it is possible to beat him with the right build and a skilled enough player. The devs are complaining about maple because they don’t want to nerf her any more than necessary, but she isn’t the only player in the game. This show takes place far enough in the future that full VR is widespread. You would think there would be several decades of lessons learned from previous MMOs where they should have known that "Insta-kill anything that touches a comically oversized shield," and "Long duration AoE stun" were bad design choices. It's not Maple's fault they are such poo poo at game balance.

You say that but modern online games still are bad at balancing things especially when it's stuff they don't expect a player to do even though we've seen what happens in plenty of online games like Everquest and WoW). Plus you know they can patch it later!

It's not Maple's fault they are such poo poo at game balance. My background I pretend that the show has is that for some reason MMORPGs never took off, but lots of single player ones did. Other genres like RTS filled the niche, and then along comes VR and someone decides to give a multiplayer RPG a go for the first time since MUD days. This is why you can do things like carry your tanks into battle and your rogues can have heal skills, and why those idiots think unique equipment is a good idea for an MMO. These guys are also still objectively better than the Final Fantasy MMO devs who did this: reddit posted:Introduced in 2005, Absolute Virtue was not successfully popped for three weeks. Three years later and no one had beaten it, but not for lack of trying. One party spent 30 hours on it. After FFXI players were hospitalized fighting FFXI's other megaboss Panadaemonium Warden, SE "nerfed" Absolute Virtue by one-third of it hit points and slapped a 2-hour limit on it. People could not beat in 2 hours what they had failed to beat in 30, and even after the devs released a video, it was still awhile before it was first killed with exploits (which the devs then patched).

My headcanon is that this game is the studio’s first MMO and everyone on the team (at least up to release) has a background in single player games and the VR technology rather than MMOs specifically, hence why they’re making so many comically easy to anticipate errors. Really though, the fact that these are all problems well known in the industry doesn’t mean squat. Game studios repeat the mistakes of the past all the time. Go google the development history of Final Fantasy XIV. Absolute Virtue in FFXI was just the tip of the iceberg.

You can look at something like PoE too where there's some broken interaction somewhere at least every league.

The real sci-fi is that this 84:1 time compression is being used for entertainment and not chaining employees to their virtual desks.

There's probably some low time compression going on during normal stuff, like 2:1 or 3:1, so kids can squeeze out more playtime out of their evening.

Gonna laugh if they are like items and some skills are created by the AI not the devs the devs then balance after poo poo be broke. That is why the unique growth gear is a thing because it was a massive feat solo clearing a boss for the first time. Same with some of Maples skills.

I've only watched through episode 2, but Maple is a cute monstrous war criminal, and I like the little touches in animation like Sally shaking her hands to get the last couple scales to fall out of inventory or flinging Maple into the air to give her a ride. It gives the show a very lively feel, in the same way that the exaggerated animations in like Monster Hunter do.

I didn't notice until now that this show's game has the same name as Amazon's upcoming MMO. I love how Maple immediately needed to get new armor to match her second form. She knows fashion is the most important part of any MMO. The people in maple-watcher chat are right. Payne is going down when she busts out her third form (Wool Maple), and her fourth form (Poison Wool Maple.)

Unless they tweak it, the set just gives a huge amount of HP. Activating her new ability costs HP, and armor piercing attacks will still work, so she figured she'd need a metric truckload of HP to make good use of it.
