No, but you push them away, which is a pain in the rear end, especially if you run some of the slower weapons, such as Greatswords.

A greatsword can also knock people into the air as well, theres a hunting technique to launch someone with the GS and have them mount the monster.

As others mentioned it doesn't hurt, but can still hit other players. The little hits can interrupt combos, knock you out of position, or just stagger you at an inopportune time. The big attacks can sometimes send other people flying into the air, which is rarely appreciated...

On a completely unrelated note, I did a quick video for Peridium. A Thing inspired short horror game with some cordyceps elements. Does get a bit graphic at times to warn viewers, but some incredible voice acting in it.

We've been preparing for awhile and it's time to finally try to capture Zorah Magdaros! We'll begin by bombarding him with cannons and ballista bolts to weaken him. Then we'll begin the mounting phase and directly attack his weak points. The plan goes well until...

Sorry for the delay on this one. Ice and I were having various technical issues when trying to record so I had to redo the audio solo.

Yeah as you might have guessed from Brick's and Ice's remarks in regard to the Commander's plan, it basically was doomed to failure from the start.

I assume the ranged weapons make the node destruction of the second phase utterly trivial.

Also, if you're taking weapon requests, I like the dooter.

That mission is sadly even more gimmicky than the escort mission; At least we got a real fight against the barroth at the end of that one. While it's supposed to be a very cinematic fight, it feels slow most of the time. Especially once you realize how little risk there is. The mounting phase going literally at Zorah's speed lets you get lots of mining done, but you'll likely explore the majority of his carapace before Nergigante arrives. Cut over 10 minutes of repetitive footage off this one...

If you can't tell though, there's a new plan brewing to try and capture Zorah! It's going to be brilliant! And daring! With hookers! And black jack!

Ranged weapons can let you stay out of the blast radius and destroy the cores with impunity for the most part. They do have a 'sweet spot' for range that might be a bit too close on some types, but we'll cover that soon!. I quite like the dooter, but it's going to be a little bit till we see it in action.

Does it offer anything to low-rank play that isn't an overpowered item? Like new weapon moves or somesuch?

I always start over from the beginning when I pick the game up again every few months, because all my muscle memory/timing has evaporated in the interim. I think I made it to the Anjanath quest once, but couldn't beat it.

The main thing I can think of that Iceborne adds to low rank play is the Clutch Claw, a grappling hook sort of tool that's added to your slinger. You can use it to do some movement tricks in the battlefield and grapple onto monsters to do some cool attacks on them. Not sure if that needs to be spoilered or not, but better safe than sorry.

A lot of the weapons got new moves with it. The long sword gains an iajitsu quick draw set of moves for example. The defender weapons are pretty powerful as we've seen, and the complete defender set really increases your longevity. But if you find them too overpowered, just don't use them or only parts of the armor set.

There's new tools for both yourself and your palico in the expansion as well. I can't speak too much on my own experience, but my understanding is it's mostly late game content with a smattering of stuff for early on.

The tree in the ancient forest? It's big. Like big big. From the intro cinematic when we came to the island:

Our hero and the handler are that tiny line under the winged dino on the left.

If you mean the tree we can grow reagents on, it's big but still growing. We'll get a good scene after the next size mission I believe.

I'm really glad you can set waypoints for your scout flies to track, or I would have gotten lost in the tree tops more than once. Lots of side routes, 'short cut' jumps down, vines to swing across, and so much climbable foliage. Finding that camp in the treetops was a complete accident the first time I played. A pair of monsters has a nest at about the highest point we can climb; The 'special jump down' you can do in that area is extreme to say the least, and is one of the reasons Ice keeps joking about our unbreakable legs. We're not done with the forest yet so expect to see more!

There are things outside the scout flies though that help you find alternate routes and such. Mosswine love to eat mushrooms and will take interesting paths to patches around their area. Various monsters can smash down walls in certain spots, and might take a way you've never seen before. Kulu is quite good at that considering it likes doing snatch and grabs on other beasties nests.

Grabbed the expansion on this sale but think I'll hold off installing it till we're done what I consider the 'tutorial' phase of the game.

I should also mention the main game is 34% off if you were thinking of giving it a whirl!

Not really since as long as you've done the Lynian Researcher stuff, you should already have them once you've talked to your cat in the camp after Iceborne's been installed.

The only one that's you need to unlock is the one for the region introduced to Iceborne and admittedly that one is a bit obnoxious because Lynian tribe quest line isn't available right off when you unlock the region itself.

Third Fleet Research Base of the Commission you mean, the Research Commission is the larger group the five fleets are a part of.

And I assume you're gonna try to get the layered version of the various armors as they become available then? Some of the quests are probably better to attempt later on when you're at the Iceborne post game and have some stupidly powerful gear but that's more become said quests can still be obnoxious even with Master Rank stuff.

The Coral Highlands is the other big vertical map alongside the Ancient Forest whereas the Wildspire Wastes is horizontally oriented and the Rotten Vale is a mix being more vertical than the Wastes but not as vertical as the Highlands or Forest.

I believe the Sapphire Star ties to a myth that is connected with World's story, being the basis of the Commission's five fleet in fact if I remember right though you don't have access to the book that tells you the myth itself at this time.

And there is a Resident Evil collaboration in Iceborne which is probably what you were thinking of though you did misremember what you actually get from said event.

Also Ice had it right the first time, the term for the performative cooking the cats were doing is Teppanyaki since the grilling itself involves using a griddle with a flat, solid surface to prepare food in restaurants in front of the guest though Teppanyaki griddles are typically made of iron not stone. Hibachi is actually the name for a traditional Japanese heating device though there is also a small cooking stove heated by charcoal called a Shichirin that are also called "hibachi" in the US.

Regarding fluff bat's diet the reason we don't see it doing any egg hunting like Kulu is because Paolumu's diet consists of the eggs of the land coral which it eats by sucking in air while expelling excess air from its mouth, the eggs it doesn't suck up being eaten by the Raphinos and other monsters. The area with the big cherry blossom tree looking coral we first encountered it is actually a regular feeding spot which it is known to visit at least twice a day since it takes a lot of coral eggs to sustain a single Paolumu.

What's worse about using the Paolumu's "air sacks" as balloons is that they are actually cheek pouches, similar to those of rodents such as squirrels, which allows it to just inflate its neck and float in the sky like a balloon and easily ride the wind currents and updrafts of the Coral Highlands without needing to flap its wings at all:

This also has the added effect of making Paolumu look bigger to predators and it'll often bare its teeth to look more threatening like it did towards the hunter.

I always wondered just what our batty friend was eating exactly. Interesting that it's basically doing a 'whale filter feeding', but makes sense with the ecology of the area. Have I mentioned how much I love the Coral Highlands?

Assumed it was some neck organ that puffed up, but that stuff cheeked Paolumu picture's pretty darned cute.

Chimera-gui
Mar 20, 2014
Paolumu isn't the only monster that eats coral eggs as they are also the staple food of the Raphinos, multiple groups of them even gathering together to feed on the eggs as well as to avoid any predators that are looking for them:

The Paolumu image comes courtesy of BannedLagiacrus who's been Monster Hunter Lore series on their twitter account.

We explore a dangerous new area: The Rotten Vale! A foul poisonous gas fills the valley; Sapping the strength of any who enter and contaminating the local wildlife. Great mounds of corpses and bones have built up in morbid display, and our latest monster is using the dead as armor.

As you might have noticed, the Radobaan armor for humans is meant to invoke the look of a standard diving dress while the palico armor is based on the atmospheric diving suit.

And something to note about Great Girros is that while it usually breathes through its nostrils and mouth, it has also evolved gill-like organs that have small hairs used for filtering out effluvium and capturing purified air in its environment, allowing Great Girros to breathe when it enters areas filled with the effluvium gas:

And while Girros also have gill-like organs for the same reason, they aren't as resistant to effluvium as Great Girros hence why it can make a Girros more violent than usual. This gas also effects Raphinos, making the normally timid monsters aggressive:

You'll get a really good look at Great Girros's gills when he does his roar to summon more buddies to his side. Assume everything here is hostile, even if it wasn't in another area!
Like the Coral Highlands, there's a lot of neat little nooks and shortcuts throughout the Rotten Vale, as well as some environmental hazards (eg. the falling rock) we can take advantage of.

We hit a snag before our return to The Vale so it's not that one, but players seem to either love or despise it. Most of the monsters we fight here are quite neat in my opinion, and really take advantage of the zone. Radobaan for example, has created massive "gutters" from travelling around his territory so much, making a type of 'ring road' on the upper levels. Great Girros is an optional fight, so I'll have to find a good time to slot him to show off his mechanics.

I'm kind of amused that Radobaan used his sleeping cloud attack twice the first time you fought him, just because he never used that attack for me for the longest time! I had no idea he was sleep element! And I used some of the Radobaan armor during low rank and high rank so I had to farm him a decent amount! It probably wasn't till over a hundred hours into the game i happened to need a Sleep Sac for something, I checked the wiki where it dropped, and. . .

"Radobaan is SLEEP? He has a SLEEP attack? :psyduck:"

But yeah anyway, Rotten Vale! This place is awesome! It's super creepy, but it has some areas that look really pretty too, and it's got one of my favorite bosses in the game!
