Dune is one of those movies I can throw on any time of the day and enjoy. I love the look of it.

The whispered inner monologues are such a blunt method of adapting a book that lets you read any character's thoughts, but it gives the movie a unique quality. Maybe Villeneuve should have the characters speak their thoughts directly in the camera, like panto performers.

i'm really afraid of the changes they're making to this adaptation. like how they're changing baron harkonnen from a madman spice addict to a more calculated bond-style villain. but that could work out okay all things considered.

"Madman spice addict" isn't really a fitting description on the Baron. He was only really a madman in the Lynch version.

Tom Holland as Feyd

I still prefer Bill Skarsgård, but I think this could be great as well. I think Holland could really go to town on that role.

The Lynch movie is, however, extremely watchable.

The first Dune miniseries is fairly mediocre, Children of Dune has the better visuals, actors, costumes, score, and writing, but has the unfortunate problem of its plot kind of falling in between more interesting events.

Distinctly remember seeing James Macavoy in it and thinking "whoa, this guy's good."

I'd be fine if Duncan becomes a ghost that only Paul can see, and advises him on how to pick up girls.

And... and maybe he could be shirtless the whole time, for no apparent reason.

The answer is Duncan Idaho is his special OC DO NOT STEAL character. There is literally no reason he should be relevant after book two, and even that is pushing it, but he's right up there being super special to the very end. Why? gently caress if I know, he was basically irrelevant in life.

I liked the shields. Couldn't help but notice that Momoa has a beard at one point, and then not. Maybe he shaves it off after the duke comes to Dune but maybe they expanded his role?

edit: I'm holding out hope the movie receives more vibrant color grading between now and release.

I wonder if Villeneuve will be able to tie a somewhat satisfying end to his movie, since it's only the first half. I feel like it's going to be drat hard, if it ends somewhere with Paul joining the Fremen and all his enemies having 'won.'

Got a reminder that this movie's premiering this week, and the week after I have vacation days I'm not doing anything special with. I think I'll look for some weekday early showing when there's likely to only be a handful of people and chance the theater for the first time in a year and a half.

Children of Dune had the misfortune of having a pretty good/great cast, great soundtrack, pretty good effects (for a TV miniseries), but a really middling story that just feels like a middle part of more interesting events.
