If the type of mask used was insignificant compared to just actually having a mask at all, then I think the actual effectiveness comes from the masks discouraging/preventing people from touching their faces/mouths/eyes.

So wearing the mask creates that physical barrier and constant reminder to be vigilant and to wash your hands once you get home and take off the mask

If you want to actually prevent inhaling the Wuhan coronavirus, you're gonna need a N95/N99 mask or something that can actually filter out something virus-sized

• not many children have been infected
  
• stay 3 to 6 feet away from infected people to avoid infection yourself (imo this implies that the virus itself is not airborne, so as long as you avoid the water droplets from someone's mouth you're probably okay)
  
• it's difficult for an infected person to spread the virus without coughing or sneezing, but this requires more research

Got driven to the grocery store today by a community vehicle. We got our temperature taken before getting in, and again at the entrance of the supermarket. Everyone is wearing a mask. And then... normal shopping. People are totally calm. I'm not sure I agree with that long post about Chinese people being susceptible to mass panic. People here in Wuhan at least are pretty pragmatic, and in my neighborhood everyone is totally normal (minus everything being closed, and the 100% mask rate).

I know someone on the plane that landed in AK. She decided to get on because she had a young kid. I know you all are joking about them bringing the virus, but she had to be at the airport at 6am to get tested all day for a 10pm flight. That plane is probably the least infected place on earth.

i would, at minimum, add an asterisk to pretty much every statistic post that there's a ton of very important information we don't have and don't know. we shouldn't be talking about mortality or hospitalization rates with any sort of objective emphasis because there's a ton about the way things work right now that we don't understand.

past number go up and it looks like it can be quite dangerous and is quite contagious, trying to say this has a 5% mortality rate or 10% hospitalization rate or w/e is very wrong. We don't even have a good way to know how many actual confirmed cases is because the process by which China is "confirming" cases is so far behind the virus as it currently exists.
