If Alliance were to become the second largest party could they ignore the DUP then, or is it still the case that there has to be one of each designation and if you don't wish to provide one then in practice you don't get to have a first minister?

Not really. Alliance used to be soft unionist, almost like the UUP. Now they let individual candidates make their own decisions. Outside of independants and small socialist parties they are the closest thing to a nuetral party.

It's also not been confirmed by any reputable sources yet, not that it would matter. On another "wouldn't matter, but it would be ironic given the fash mob", the rumor mill has it that the person who initially tackled the attacker is a Brazilian guy.

Yep.

I guess because he looks like a local (and maybe even sounds like one after being here 20 years) he's considered 'one of the good ones'. Or not. I'm Northern so I've been paying more attention to the far right in England and their effects on politics. If the likes of Farage and Robinson had been nipped in the bud early the UK might not be in the position it's in now. I guess a lot of people in the Republic thought 'It could never happen here'. And now look.

I'd not been checking in with Conor McGregor recently but apparently he's made his full transition to spokesperson of the far-right in Ireland.

He deleted a post yesterday calling for people on the streets after saying "We are at war" to his 10m followers.

As if I needed more reason to dislike that guy. National embarassment.

There's a new youtuber and MMA fan who's making pretty in depth videos about the history of the sport.

He's Irish too and not a fan of CMG either.

If this our jan 6th it implies people might eventually be prosecuted. I’m not optimistic.

Though I have heard rumblings about new incitement to hatred statutes being drawn up.

Yeah, I heard that too. The far right calling it censorship or some nonsense.

And the irony of this would be funny if it wasn't so... I just can't find the words. Get mad at a stabbing of women and children and then go threaten female immigrant workers with a knife:

I can't find any paper talking about it - Google first page for "Ashtown Aldi knife" only returns that Twitter account or people reposting it, so not sure if this is some old stuff.

It looks like they are at least talking about changing the new incitement to hatred act to include social medias. It's funny that it was not there already since this act is from last October, iirc? https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2023/11/24/taoiseach-vows-to-modernise-laws-on-incitement-to-hatred-to-include-social-media/

A bit more on new legislation here https://www.thejournal.ie/cctv-incitement-to-hatred-legislation-6231721-Nov2023/?utm_source=twitter_short

Of course this can't be retroactive, so it won't have any impact on what happend already, but maybe it'll make things a bit more difficult for the fash. At least for the really dumb ones.

Yeah, I should check my sources better. I'm furious about this - just as furious as the far right - and it's not making me think clearly.

Anyway, this is something I have been waiting for - a timeline of events that led to the riots:

I remember a debate me and the boys used to have in highschool.

"Would you sleep with Jim Corr, if you got to sleep with all three Corr sisters after?"

Parts of Ireland called lemonade/soda 'minerals', as the first fizzy drinks was mineral water.
My mum's area of Sligo calls it minerals, but only boomers now use it I think as never heard it in ages.

Me and my brothers used to call it 'millarn', thinking it was from the company 'Maine' that used to sell it door to door.

Sounds weird now buying lemonade from a back of a truck like an ice cream.

There was still a Maine lorry doing regular deliveries where I lived as late as 2009.

Maine still do door-to-door deliveries of fizzy drinks. Fizzy drink fact: Americans call generic carbonated water a club soda, but it's a lapsed trademark of the Club brand of drinks like Orange, Lemon and Rock Shandy that was invented by C&C in Dublin.

I grew up in a bar. I wonder if Cantrell and Cochrane still do the peppermint cordial. I noticed a bottle of that stuff sitting on our shelves for years. I couldn't figure out what it was for until I was in my mid-teens. There was a former political prisoner who liked to slam several brandys' and port before going home to his wife. He would take a couple of shots of undiluted peppermint cordial to freshen his breath before leaving. It didn't sober him up any, of course. Also didn't hide the fact that snot was dripping from his nose and he was carrying a bottle of Henessey home under his arm.

If you see a bottle of that stuff in a bar somewhere don't ask to try it. It's likely over 40 years old. I don't think cordial goes out of date, but still...
