My understanding is that it uses the same cast from FataMori insomuch as their names, appearances, and core personalities are functionally identical, but it's unconnected narratively and their actual experiences and identities are completely different; the two have no actual connections, so it ends up being more that the original characters are treated as more like an archetype that gives you an immediate understanding of what kind of character theyre going to be if youve played the original. (I have not played the VN, obviously, but that was the impression I got talking w/ someone who knew more)
