I had this naive thought that it'd be neat to be in something like that as long as you were decently secure, but that went away with the Zhengzhou flood. When it started I was like "wow neat I've never seen so much rain in my life!" then when poo poo started collapsing and holes opened up in the ground around me it was not very cool. I'm guessing an earthquake would be the same thing. Little earthquakes are probably all "hah did you feel that?" , water pouring off the top of buildings less cool.

386-SX 25Mhz VGA posted:the cpc seems pretty sincerely leftist in the Dengist “use capitalism to build socialism” way, but afaik they have never claimed to have completed building socialism let alone communism. The “china is a communist state” thing is probably just confusion from the name of the cpc and the western habit of conflating socialism or attempts to get there as communism Noooo unfortunately there's a whole breed of tankie that believes the following - The Western press is involved in a campaign of manufactured consent against China, and thus is filling the heads of American citizens with anti-Chinese propaganda, spreading lies about it as a fascist state, the purpose being to undermine communism in the minds and hearts of the populace at all costs, as it's a threat to capitalist democracy. Thus, it behooves one to look beneath the veil - and to deduce that China is actually communist and good, as is proven by the capitalist West's desire to take it down. When framed in this context, China and Russia are seen and idealized as the last bastions of communism, and are targets of the West because of this, and their pushing back is a survival tactic to protect communism, to prevent it from being eradicated by capitalist hegemony. Trying to explain that China is not communist gets hand-waved as part of the propaganda campaign. Anything bad one could say about China is fully disregarded as part of this, and there's even a whole line of thinking built in about anyone who does speak up about China - that the US pays Chinese ex-pats to get up and talk in front of audiences in order to spread the idea that China is a fascist hellstate. So any time someone is like, hey this thing in China is bad, their response is haha oh you fools - it's alllll part of the propaganda campaign to take down communism. This is also how you get leftists who support Russia invading Ukraine - it's Russian communism trying to protect itself against the expansionist NATO, as West-supporting Ukraine was a threat to their communist way of life.* NOTE: I don't believe this, gently caress Putin and gently caress Russian imperialism, just like gently caress Israel. Support Ukraine, support Palestine. StrangersInTheNight fucked around with this message at 14:13 on Apr 5, 2024 |

I would sooner expect Southeast Asia to resume its 1980s growth convergence than India to pick up the slack, tbh. Indonesia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh in the particular (none of these are small countries, as such)

what's especially funny to me is how they give away that they don't even see it as part of china. like, they wouldn't have called it "China's Guangdong". they'd have just said "in china" or "in guangdong province" or something

It is the same with Hong Kong. Flights to there leave from the international section. The signs, (that I remember) also differentiated the "Domestic" and "International, (Hong Kong/Taiwan)" sections. Macau doesn't get the acknowledgement though
