Best that can come out of this clusterfuck is maybe something will happen to cause the Chinese themselves to overthrow the commies which would probably lead to a couple million of them getting shot until the soldiers get tired of murdering their own people (happens) then a new happy era of Taiwan number one can begin and wealth beyond measure will resume for all. I think too many Chinese believe the pandemic is under control in China, and are much more likely to believe other countries have inadequate disease control.

Atlas Hugged posted:*snip* This is pretty much why I stopped studying Japanese. I spent a hell of a long time learning a relatively difficult language that I don't use in my personal or professional life. The time sunk to reward ratio is pretty low. Even those I know who do use Japanese in their professional lives always couple that with another skill they have. Speaking a foreign language has been a sign of culture and/or intelligence for centuries, but it's really a form a classism. Speaking English also kinda makes us spoiled.

Saying that it's a form of classism is ironically an incredibly Anglocentric take dude. Considering my audience is these forums, not really? edit for your edit: That's an odd take, and is also a kind of woke-me-up pissing contest that's better off in a DnD thread.

You guys lived in China and you're worried about 3 day old refrigerated rice. rofl edit: quote:B. cereus is a pathogen that causes two kinds of illness. If large amounts of the toxin is consumed, it will cause a vomiting sickness 30 minutes to six hours after consumption, according to the CDC. If the stimulated spores themselves are consumed and germinate in the intestines it will cause diarrhea up to 16 hours after ingestion. bob dobbs is dead posted:so the real reason its not such a big deal in most asian households is the keep warm setting on rice cookers. it gets to 140, 150f, the bacterial toxins form best from 75f to 95f The real reason is they make rice more often, know how much they'll use, and have plans for leftovers. If they don't have plans, they'll just pitch it, because who wants dried out rice? If you keep rice for any period of time at that tempt it gets pretty nasty. In the same amount of time, you could pluck the bowl out and serve out of it (which my family does every year at thanksgiving) you'll be just fine. If it's more than 90 minutes or so, I usually consider it a wash. Just put on a smaller amount of rice on later.

Grand Fromage posted:Not true at all, leaving rice on keep warm for long periods is common if not the default. In China they even sell special rice thermoses so you can keep your rice sitting out warm for days without keeping the rice cooker full. People in China have at least mild food poisoning so regularly it's hard to track to any particular source, though. I must have heard literally thousands of people having aggressive diarrhea in public bathrooms. Dunno how they do it in China, never been invited to look, but I knew was the case with the several families I stayed with in Japan. The... umm... description of the food poisoning rate kinda sounds like maybe that is not the greatest method of preserving rice.

I read an article recently about a guy who was a victim of it once in Beijing, and it caused him to turn down a stranger’s offer to be taken out for tea in Syria years later. Not that all Syrians good and mainlanders bad, it’s just a cultural tendency. It is. In Japan as well. Never been a vicitim of it, but I always hear people posting about falling for it in travelers' forums.
