I’m starting to wonder if Bernie has been front runner all along and the polls have been misrepresenting it to give Biden as much of an artificial lead as possible.

Recall that Hilary was topping the polls until election of Donald Trump.

Well I have confidence in the precinct captains on the ground. I expect everyone to be individually interviewed and the calculations redone one by one with some officials present to ensure integrity. That’s why I think this is taking so long. As other posters have mentioned Iowa has always been a shady process and in the past it was also opaque allowing people to just wing the numbers without scrutiny. In the post 2016 world however, the integrity of the process is paramount and I think the delay has a lot to do with making sure there wasn’t any fuckery so there’d still be some credibility.

If a narrative builds around people rigging the process and there being no credibility to an open and highly public process it could trash the Democratic Party so hard they’d go the way of the Whigs and we’d end up with some new third party. Nobody wants that. There’s grifters who will kiss the ring if Bernie wins as long as they can keep their positions so it serves no one to have a reputation of corruption and electoral malfeasance for the Democratic Party.

I expect the Iowa results to be similar to what the polls were predicting. A 28-30 percent Bernie lead with a +/- 3-4% margin of error. I think the procedures to ensure the numbers are correct will get dragged out so that the media impact of a Biden flame out and Bernie victory is negated. When Bernie wins NH everyone will attribute that as a given. My prediction is we will have to wait until an extremely competitive and vicious Super Tuesday before we really get a front runner that can be declared nominee with some degree of competence.

The conclusion is that Iowa was hard fought but it won’t do what it used to do for the winner and thus we are in for a chaotic couple months before we get the closure we seek.

The biggest irony is that all those pundits saying “No clear winner in Iowa” almost seemed prescient about this entire process.

So if Bernie is the Nominee how does he stop his own party from sabotaging his campaign against Trump.

Like are we going to donate to the presidential campaign via act blue or is it going to happen via DNC fundraising channels? Should he just surround himself by people he trusts rather than the party apparatus?

Basically I’m wondering if Bernie gains access to any kind of resources or support to his campaign if he becomes the nominee. The entire party hates his guts and only through democracy is he gaining his power here.

If Sanders gets a majority and wins the nomination, the DNC will not lift a finger to help him win the white house.
Finally if the odds look good against Trump, Bloomberg will run a spoiler campaign to ensure Sanders loses.

No matter how you look at it, there is no scenario where Bernie enters the White House. The stranglehold the wealthy, powerful and well connected forces of this nation have on political life is too strong to be beaten by electoral politics. But I should add I have no way to legally influence the campaign I’m a Canadian with a vested interest in seeing Bernie in the Whitehouse because I believe the entire planet follows the signals sent out by America on what is politically acceptable.

A Bernie state department forces Canadians to acknowledge that austerity is dead in the water and that we need govt spending on infrastructure and green projects to sustain the economy. We need stronger unions and better wages. If the US head of state advocates for this it becomes politically trendy and other people will start seeing these demands as practical.

I remember during the Obama Administration an article about Pete Buttigieg came out on a major newspaper. At the time it was talking about who Obama's successor would be and what the future of the Democratic Party looked like. I knew subconsciously who Pete was because of that article. At the time the puff piece made him look so promising I thought there was no way in hell he'd have a shot at being president. So now here he is running and I seriously hope I was right back then.

Pete has been preparing for this run for a very very very long time. You insert these little articles so you remember his name. You drop a few puff pieces here and there foreshadowing it. Then long after he drops from memory he pops back up to run for president and suddenly it's like "HEY ! I know this guy" and it feels like you're in the club when the DJ drops a catchy Top 40 song you haven't heard in years but and everyone screams because they mutually know the song.

How do Bernie volunteers make time to do that job between their day job and private life? I'd like to live vicariously while I wait for NH.

I still don’t understand what kinds of powers a Democratic nominee or president has over the actual party.

Is he the de facto party boss during his term? How exactly does Bernie Sanders the nominee have the power to fire people like Tom Perez or others? Do we even have a talent pool of left wing loyalists to replace these people in the event of a left wing purge?

Anyway I wanna talk about NH. What is the strategy to counteract the media narrative that Pete won and is surging ahead in NH? CNN has announced him as the rising star of the Democratic Party. It’s fortunate the rest of the media isn’t doing this and just calling it a tie but it’s still a powerful message.

I’ve long held the belief that CNN has degraded from a respectable news agency to a tabloid news org similar to Fox News but more neoliberal centrist friendly. Still their reporting on Iowa as dishonest as it is is like calling Pete Viagra to Bernie’s Sildenafil. Only those who really care and shop around are going to buy the latter. The rest will buy what they know because it’s the official name brand. This has a powerful effect on the voting public. If the media reported on this properly Bernie should be the presumptive nominee by now!

Will Bernie attack Pete on his south bend record? He needs to attack him hard on his record. Pete engaged in nepotism to fire a qualified black police chief so the police force can murder black people. Pete must get savaged in the debate. The media will ignore it but it needs to be said. The message needs to come out.

People equate stock market performance with job creation and rising incomes even if that isn’t necessarily true.
Basically the overall performance of the DOW Jones and NASDAQ are treated as a measurement for how well you can potentially do even if you’re stuck in lovely precarious work.

For the 50k to high six figures crowd that still works for a living with expectations of retirement:

The stock market performance means their own retail investments, 401Ks and IRAs are doing well. For Americans that’s their kids college education or a down payment on a new home or car. For many people these things are dear to their hearts and super important and they number in the millions.

A Bernie victory likely crashes the stock market and removes a money making and retirement savings avenue many Americans have become accustomed to for decades now that defined benefit retirement plans have gone the way of the dodo and everyone is on IRAs or 401ks.

What they miss is that a Bernie admin would expand social security, boost salaries, and make retirement more accessible to normies. Nobody remembers when things like that were possible. The generation that enjoyed those benefits is either dead, retired or grandfathered into those plans with an FYGM attitude. .

I've been arzying like crazy since this primary got started but I'm gonna take everyone's advice and take some breaks from this topic where possible.

I'm not an American citizen or resident, I'm just emotionally invested in having a world leader even the odds for the little people. I'm known among my co-workers to be a persuasive speaker with the chops to do sales. I have zero fear when it comes to canvassing or making calls. Were it possible for me I would be working for Bernie's campaign with every minute of free time available to me. I'd likely have hit my donation limit by now too.

My obsession with Bernie's candidacy comes from a desire to at least right some of the wrongs in the world and prove that we humans can build a more compassionate society in an era of dispassionate capitalism where we are alienated and our sense of self worth is determined by our earning power.

I believe that if you hosed up your life with bad financial decisions, you deserve a chance to make that right and get back on your feet.
I believe that people who have made mistakes are redeemable.
I believe that if you have been hurt, someone should be there to help you.
I believe that if you are poor, you deserve a way out of poverty and into a comfortable existence.
I believe that talentless bullies who owe their power and positions to nepotism and class advantages shouldn't hold power over those less fortunate than them.
I believe that whether or not you're black, muslim, gay, straight, white or trans that we should all be able to help each other, stand up for one another, listen to one another and be loyal to each other in the pursuit of our common well being.

I can go on but I'll basically re-state Bernie's platform plus whatever social democratic movement is the flavor of the month.

Anyway long story short these matters are incredibly important to me. The older I get the more I realize reality is a loving horror show. I feel like that guy in that movie who finds out Soylent Green is people.

I'm gonna make an effort not to chicken little the thread anymore. These primaries aren't over yet. People have won without Iowa and NH. There have been world events where we narrowly avoided Nuclear war because one or two individuals decided to do the right thing.
Lets place our confidence in Bernie and his talented campaign staff that they know what they're doing and that it aint over till its over. At the very least it helps the morale of the thread if we maintain a positive attitude rather than adding to the chorus of negativity.

Negativity about Bernie's campaign is not productive. It hurts you, and it hurts me and ultimately doesn't do anything to get him elected. So I'll do what I can from my end and talk to Americans I know, spread the message to anyone who will listen and fight the good fight. To you my American friends, I really hope you take this nomination, beat Trump in the general and make the world a better place. If you can't do that, at least try to do it in your city or state.

I walked out of that debate firmly believing in a Bernie victory. He didn’t score all the kill shots but he did really well to stay above it all with his image untarnished and his views once more communicated. I think the DNC establishment is running well and truly scared. The writing is on the wall.

I really really appreciated the contributions Steyer made to the debate stage.
I still don’t understand him, his motivations or his ultimate goal. Like during this debate he served more as a person trying to steer the discussion to key issues like the racial abuses and inequalities America faces and that spurred a lot of productive conversation over topics of how to improve wealth in black communities for example.

It’s almost as if some of them were channeling some of Malcom Xs speeches about how black money leaves black communities and enriches white ones.

I just don’t see what Steyer hopes to achieve here. He can’t win the nomination, he’s following behind Bernie in his lane giving him layups and backup. His billionaire status will prevent him from having a cabinet post anywhere in the administration. Normally my friendly side would say he could make a decent treasury secretary but then you’re just putting a liberal Mnuchin in charge and it crashes your credibility.

Perhaps the end game for Steyer is to replace Dianne Feinstein for senator when she retires?

If congressmen and senators don’t vote for his policies he’ll mobilize all the protestors and people who want these policies to protest and demand yes votes from their representatives. If they continue to say no it will result in primary campaigns against them during the midterms.

We trade stocks based on speculation and perceived value. We inflate the value of things because people keep buying it because other people buy them. (see Bitcoin and Real estate).

Therefore the stock market can continue posting gains and growth and will likely do so well until after Trump is out of office. Once he's out of office it'll crash so the blame sits with Bernie or whoever else becomes president.

Replace the stock market numbers with a human happiness index and an environmental health index both in general and by local region as well as internationally. Then vow to push those numbers up. The economy only being a single part of the happiness index.

I mean, it sounds corny, but measuring human happiness and how well our environment is doing would cause people to focus on it, because when you measure a thing, it gets resources, attention and funds. It also couches the rhetoric of what people say about those things in terms of how happy people are and how well the environment is doing. Meanwhile, the stock market is not only a measurement of wealth via gambling, but when the stocks go up, that tends to be bad for things like wages and having decent hours. If the stock market goes up but we're not producing anything new or good, I view that negatively.

It's poo poo and I've long despised it. Everyone treats stock market valuations like they're the be all and end all.
When the stock market inevitably crashes everyone's gonna fixate on that even if things like real wages are going up and people are enjoying better benefits.

There's a lot of work to do to un-gently caress this economy and it requires efforts that need to be sustained well past Bernie's term. Probably more important than a lot of his campaign promises is just the work that will need to be done to remake the Democratic party in his image and to make him an infaliable legend so that nobody breaks from party orthodoxy on things like labour rights, generous pension programs (govt or private via labour regs) and environmental protection to stop climate change. It's a monumental task. I nay-sayed like a motherfucker but I'm convinced Bernie is going to win and what really needs to happen now is to cement that win into lasting progress so we don't just elect a republican 4-8 years from now to undo everything.

I'm even thinking that the midterms could be a rout for the democratic party because Bernie will either achieve a lot and then get pushed back or achieve nothing and get an R senate and house to keep him "in check".
