I wouldn't get too hyped over Iowa being a slam dunk. Biden appeals to old white centrists and Iowa has those in spades.

But yeah, at this point you're hoping that the polls aren't indicative of the surge of youth turnout that'll take place there.

Yeah, it's yet another way that Old White People™ have a way outsized voice in things. They really need to have a state or set of states that actually represents the US population go first every year.

The focus on the first state of a primary really feels like a shortcoming of the general process. I've read a couple pieces around online that are basically "why iowa, well why not iowa?" but they all seem to propose the only possible solution is simply picking a different fixed order. The entire argument is "if not iowa, then who else". And it's like I dunno, we don't do it state by state in the full on election, clearly there are other hypothetical ways to do it.

Maybe I'm just a tad bitter cause I'm in WA and our primary might as well not exist but it's like drat how has this not been addressed? If state by state is necessary, do a lottery, if not, do it at once, current system blows.

They should rank the states based on how their population represents the US as a whole, and go in that order.

If the primaries were ranked in order of how closely they represented the entire US based on age, median income, racial background and education then the first four states would be Illinois, Kansas, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

Sorry, I was not clear: based on racial makeup. And yeah, it won't be the optimal result either, but it is better than "old white people go first."

If primaries were based soley on racial makeup then the first four states would be Illinois, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Keep in mind this is how well they represent the national average, these are obviously not the most diverse states.

How do you define diverse though? Those states are more diverse than Iowa and NH. I think the intent should be to have states that are as close to a microcosm of the country as a whole go first, so candidates have to attempt to address a broader range of concerns to gain the initial lead and the press that goes with it.

Question : has anyone in the MSN, like anyone at all, questioned Buttigieg’s lack of experience?

I seem to remember a significant amount of kvetching about Obama being a freshman Senator with no executive or foreign policy experience in 2008. Wonder what the difference is between Pete and Obama...

Pete is white, that's all the experience he needs. Plus with Trump winning, it's very obvious that question is completely irrelevant these days.

I think this makes Butt much more viable in the states everyone is writing him off in. The news will just be repeating his name over and over as "almost beating Sanders" and he will become the go to low info "I don't want SOCIALISM!" / name recognition guy if Biden stops getting talked about or is only talked about as "being done". I wish I was wrong, but I think this will be a real ratcat fight with Pete in places it is not supposed to be*.

Bernie should pick Papa John for his running mate. Checks the "name recognition" and "will bring in the centrists" boxes, plus provides the missing fast food industry experience Bernie lacks. Who says no?

Yeah I just really hate the idea of my address/phone number/email being in any political database. I know I could put in bogus info, just wish it wasn't so invasive in the first place.

I was going to donate to Bernie awhile back but when I saw all the info they wanted I backed out and I still received an email pushing me to complete my donation so they're probably scraping any input already.

They have to ask a bunch of that stuff for campaign finance law reasons. And, as others have said, every political campaign already has your address, email, and phone number.
