Honest question: if Warren were at 25% and Bernie were at 9%, would you be implying that Bernie was a traitor to the left for staying in the race? Or would you be explaining why Bernie was the more legitimate left candidate with better ideas and plans and therefore he should remain in the race as long as there was a shot?

i've only put a little thought into this, but i think a good question to you might be: if all of the candidates were the same as Bernie in their positions and records and such, would people be as vitriolic toward those candidates?

I can't help but feel like it would help Bernie in particular because of the "he's 78 and just had a heart attack" point that some people love to make. I mean, living past 78 is definitely not unheard of, but I think it would assuage that particular fear that some people have. Stepping into those shoes, I feel like if he were to fall ill, or retire back to his old job of dragging the sun across the sky, it would be nice to know that not all would be lost to chaos.

Somebody please give me a good reason to hope.

The presidency doesn't matter and neither does this horse race. People say that at the very least him winning would be an indicator of where the country wants to go, but really we've already made it very clear where we want to go. Democratic Socialism is a thing now. People are going to start participating more in making things happen imo. Local elections will become a thing, and if a mass movement of individuals is the key to a leftist movement, then I argue that so too does a lot of smaller government bodies working towards a leftist goal.

The thing I hope for is the opportunity to do better. Whether that's by way of the party righting itself or us demolishing them and making way for something better is up to them.

Please don't get mad at me for posting cringe, but I think you guys are getting too hopeless because you've become to hopeful.

Who was the hope and change guy? Obama. Did he do the thing? Nope. Now we have Bernie. He's the "get mad and take the agency in your lives" guy and is he going to do the thing? Let's say yes. Let's say he does a bang up job and at the end of his term the world is a better place. At least we all hope so.

But that's the thing with hope. You're believing that something good will happen. That's not enough though. You have to make it happen. People are already doing that in this primary and those people aren't going away ever. We're not just getting mad and taking action. We're familiarizing ourselves with taking action. Next election when it's Buttigieg trying to primary Bernie Sanders all those people are going to slide right back into that place where they're going to go knock on doors or talk to their families or get to the front lines of the posting warzone or whatever. It's going to become the normal thing to do.

In the same way that hope hasn't lead to anything good, hopelessness has the exact same control over events. So imo it's better to forego it entirely and focus on the next move you're going to make.

Realize the control that you have imo

Majorian posted:

I agree with at least the core of this. I think hope is an incredibly powerful, important part of our strategy as leftists. But it has to have follow-through, and if Bernie doesn't keep pushing for what we elected him to fight for, we need to hold him accountable. We (for the most part) didn't do that with Obama, and that is why we failed. As you say, we need to make taking political action outside of voting a regular part of our lives. A lot of us are already well on the way to doing that. Some of us need to work more on it, myself included. But we need to make political action something that all American leftists and progressives make a regular, active part of their lives.

I just mean that hope hasn't or won't ever really do anything on its own. I mean, yeah it can be a motivator, but so to can anger or a competitive spirit or pride. I think right now people should obviously be angry about our situations and the abuse we deal with and the only thing to oppose that is good vibes and open hearts which is also very useful and good.

I love you guys though :3:

Couldn't believe my ears today when one of my coworkers who is also our union liaison said he voted for Bloomberg because he could beat Trump. I'm like, "He's doing horribly" and he's all, "We need a moderate to run against Trump and Bernie isn't going to be able to do it." I'm still excited for this race though you guys. Like, I'm not worried at all and I think it's because I just got a text from our union about a $.55 raise which apparently will be followed by another one next year, all do to the fighting we did in renegotiating our contract. Sure it's nowhere near enough money to live, but I'm still riding that high of succeeding at a thing that workers should do.

Since Sanders is trying to get a workers party movement into power, I think about it like that same fight. And the real key is that workers have soooooooo much more power than they think. In our renegotiation, it was an 11th hour victory and we basically put on the table the offer that we either get what we want or our country-wide company employer loses a huge HUGE chunk of profits and forfeits the most populous state in the union after New York. Obviously, I feel like the parallel is that as a left wing of a party we have the power to put forth the option that either the party plays fair or the whole thing burns down and they lose their "business" and probably everything else. From there we invest in our own party that will slowly win over their constituents. The last few decades the Democratic Party has been trying to spread right to get the votes, and has left The Left to rot, and now we're ready to split.

So I am a Bernie supporter, and I've never called anyone "cuck" or "normie" or "liz lad" or "bernie bro" or "boomer" or any of that. I know the internet is full of teachable moments that are usually used as an excuse to shame people, but I don't perpetuate that.

I have a sneaking suspicion that my stance is actually a lot more common and people are buying way too heavily into the idea that people are uncooperative assholes by default instead of generally agreeable by default. Maybe you some of you guys agree? Maybe the whole debate on who is the worse group of people is, oh gee idk, endless?

Yeah that's true and we do at least for politics sake, but from a moral standpoint admonishing Sanders voters for not doing it is unfair, considering we've always been at the halfway point with open arms. Warren voters retreating towards their own secluded area while shouting about "Bernie Bros" at this point is only putting distance between them and compromise imo, so they need to change that.
