Austin Powers isn’t really a parody of Bond films, it’s really more of a parody of the legions of sub-Bond ripoffs that floated around in the sixties, like Man from UNCLE and In Like Flynn.

I didn’t see her myself, but apparently Maxine Peake was at my CLP nomination meeting. But yeah in general members of political parties heavily skew old, I guess because people decide to get into politics as a hobby once they retire. Even with Momentum, having had access to the database I can tell you that the membership is a lot older than you’d think.

A shitload of country names in various languages eventually translate down to "foreigners", "people who aren't us", "people we don't know anything about", "people who have one weird attribute because some of our lot met some of them like that thousands of years ago". A lot of country names involve the word for "mute" because the name is from long enough ago that the people who named it thought that people who couldn't speak their language literally could not speak at all.

One of the fun things about monitoring a political figure's public-facing email account is that you get to read people's 2,800 word essay asking Rebecca Long-Bailey to support the decriminalisation of incest.

Yeah, most of the TERF complaints we've received at the Rebecca campaign have been from men.

Looke posted:I haven’t signed up to any campaigns for the Labour leadership/deputy election but just received a text asking if I was supporting Dr Rosena are they allowed to do this? I assume they got my details from my Labour membership, but not sure if they can just text me out of the blue like that Today is the day that Labour allowed the campaigns access to the central Labour membership database. The campaigns are all given a certain number of emails and texts they’re allowed to send out with it, and there’s been a negotiation behind the scenes for what order they’re in. I don’t know much about the deputy contest, but presumably Rosena got first dibs. Phone calls are not restricted though I believe, so there will be a flurry of calling from now until next week when the ballots drop.

TACD posted:Sorry if this has already been asked but is there a good place to lodge a formal complaint about this text spam? The Labour complaints page seems geared toward complaining about a specific person rather than the membership communications in general, but I want to make it clear to whoever's organising this that I'm basically one more spammy text from giving up my membership just to make it stop. All the texts from the campaigns are pre-arranged with the Labour Party. I think each campaign is allowed two texts each from now on (though don’t quote me on that), of which these ones this weekend are the first. This only applies to the central Labour data though. If you’re on another list, for instance the Momentum database, those organisations are allowed to text you as much as they like.

I think this eugenicist business is actually kind of a big deal. This is the first just absolutely unacceptable thing the Tories have done since the election. So this is a test of what they can get away with. I think the Tories (or Cummings anyway) want to play the Trump game of just not caring about criticism over awful poo poo and just waiting for the news cycle to move on. So the real question is whether the news media will keep criticism of this up, or let them get away with it. I'm not optimistic.

Love how much the media is trying to focus this Caroline Flack stuff onto the unwashed masses on social media where the great crime of single, ordinary people being mean to a celebrity goes on every day, and not the actual media where the tiny crime of billionaire-owned newspapers read by a whole country relentlessly hound people the billionaire doesn’t like can be safely ignored.

I guess this is the main reason why they’re moving into TV and radio then, with the Tories’ help, of course. Unrelated, Keir’s mailout is extremely suspicious. No one at the RLB campaign can work out how he could possibly afford it if he isn’t being bankrolled by some unsavoury character. So he probably is.
