Somehow between when I left this morning and arrived home this afternoon I now have a huge exhaust leak and my car is loud as poo poo. It's annoying, but also kinda fun in a juvenile kinda way when I hold gears longer and give a lot more throttle. I feel like I do major exhaust work every 3-4 years, though.

In my efforts to find the perfect truck shaped car, I keep coming back to the conflict in philosophies with regards to money. On one hand, I'm leaning toward the Suzuki Carry or Mighty Boy. I know from experience that it's not ideal to have a car with parts that only come from across an ocean, but with the price of pre-97, manual transmission, quality trucks, I could just buy the trucks I dream about instead On the other, perhaps more reasonable, hand I could spend $800 and get a piece of garbage, use it up, and just buy more $800 piles of rust and Bondo pretending to be trucks when they die. Selling them for whatever price is better than scrap prices

The problem with plan A is obvious, parts. Registration and ability to drive on highways or whatever too. Don’t know where you are, but you can register them (25 year rule doesn’t apply if you have a title) in indiana and drive on public roads but not interstates. Personally I have been looking at Kubota RTVs and these caught my eye because I could legally drive it to the gas station. The route I would suggest is the second. But here is the problem, trucks hold value on the low end. Sure, a $80k F350 might be worth $20k 8 years later, but once they hit a certain point, the depreciation levels out. Especially ones with a reputation for being tough and reliabile. I had a 2006 dmax silverado 2500, I paid $25k for it in 2011. When it was totalled in 2015 with 166ish on the clock insurance gave me nearly $22k. That same truck with a clean title is still worth about $20k today. The ones that are cheap have many reasons why they are cheap. Finding one thats worth the money requires paying more than it seems you want to spend, or investing time and elbow grease in making a cheap one right. I would avoid rangers, s10s, tacomas and Colorados. People think they cost less to own but they don’t, the mpg still sucks, the resales are always really high, and the affordable trucks are always beat to poo poo. A Nissan Frontier might be ok, but watch out for rust. The newer ones bend in half because the frame rotted through before the bed sides even bubble up. Honestly your best bet is a V6, 2wd half ton in whatever make and cab configuration you want. Used fleet trucks can be decent, the maintenance might have been done on time, but watch out for the used contractor trucks or the ones owned by construction workers. I got a great deal off an older coworker who sold me a 1993 GMC 1500 4x4 for $1200 with a fresh rebuilt motor and 110k on the clock. He locked it up hunting and the person who put the engine in did not understand fuel injection so it ran like poo poo and I got a deal. It needed a vacuum line from the egr solenoid to the egr valve and a new ecu. That seems to be a common theme, the seller might not understand “computer poo poo” and if its running like crap you can get a deal. So yeah, V6 1/2 ton, 2WD, 1990s-2000s and you should be ok. Put the pedal to the floor when you crank it and listen for any dead cylinders. When it starts, look for blue smoke out of the exhaust and pull the oil cap and look for blow by. If it passes the engines are all decent. Transmission will have 4 speeds and a locking torque converter. You can also find manuals. If its got all its gears and shifts smooth its probably ok, if not, a rebuild is $1500 or so. I would budget 2500-3500 all in and you can reasonably expect it to last. You may think you can do it cheaper but by the time its fixed and in reasonable condition it always costs that much or more. Good luck.

I just got spark plugs and a ignition rotor for $7 total for my 84 acty and there is nothing stopping me from driving it on the highway but it’s slow. Just get a kei truck. An old mighty boy isn’t a very reasonable alternative but hey go for it. Carry parts should be very easy to get.

Jesus Christ i swear humanity is actively getting dumber. I just had an argument with someone online that because Dettol lists that it kills "Human Coronavirus" it means the new Novel Wuhan strain is actually man made and a conspiracy to actively kill off a large portion of the planets population. Ignoring the fact that Human Coronavirus includes the SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome strains and they've been known and identified since 2003 and 2012. But noooooo, that cant be what Dettol are referring too on their packaging dated in 2019 at all...... gently caress me dead, we're doomed.

On the truck topic, brother borrowed ours for a couple weeks after he killed his VW and now it has a massive vacuum leak somewhere. Can hear it hissing which might make tracking it down easy but now it's nearly undriveable so that's a pain. I need to get him back over here to diagnose and fix it because I don't have the energy to crawl around an engine bay.

Just turned 40! Had an awesome surprise party and an even more awesomer CHILD FREE getaway with the wifey. Regrettably, the severance package at work is not so good, was hoping to just be sent home with full pay, but the mothership doesn't do it that way so neither do we. Guess I have three months' of paid job hunting then.

Its a testament to our society that people think with a weekend, or two, or even months on a computer and they feel that they are literally more educated on a highly technical subject than specialists that have devoted quite literally, their entire professional lives on the same topic. The whole anti-vaxx movement is a textbook example of this.

So I've been laid up with a cold for two days (and have had to enjoy coronavirus jokes about twenty times). As I slumbered this afternoon, I had a dream. I'm walking along some kind of dirt road, pulling a cabin bag behind me. The sun is out in force, in a way we never get here in Sweden. I'm baking in the sun, pulling that little cabin bag. The road and surrounding terrain are really dry, and there's basically no shadow to be had and I don't anything to drink with me. I haven't seen a single person or car so far, but after several hours (I think), I start hearing traffic up ahead. Finally, cresting a hill I see a bigger road down in the valley in front of me, some kind of county highway I'd guess. Maybe I can get a lift or at least find something to drink. The cabin bag is really heavy. It's still some way to go, but halfway down to the highway there's a car parked along the dirt road, idling. It's a heavily tinted Subaru Baja. As I pass it, the driver rolls down the window. It's STR, a man I have never met but know exactly who it is as soon as I see him. He pulls down his aviators slightly, and asks "Hey dude, you want a Corona?" And then I wake up. Nidhg00670000 fucked around with this message at 20:30 on Feb 2, 2020 |

And this is when Bajaja and STR's paths collide. I would love to find a Baja, but I can't say I've even seen one in the flesh in years. (don't worry, they're based on the Legacy, which is what Brokeback is also based on, so your dream just put me in a cooler version of my car) randomidiot fucked around with this message at 19:05 on Feb 2, 2020 |

The first gen cab forward LH cars really did age pretty well compared to their contemporaries. My first car was a 1995 Eagle Vision with the 3.3 V6 that had 160 blazing horsepower and would scream in excess of 5000 RPM. A friend in high school had an Intrepid with the 3.5 and I was jealous. Hey Kaker or Dave - I need some OEM keyblanks for a 1992 Miata which seem exceedingly hard to find in the states, any idea if these are something you can get through your importing connections? The one original I got with the car has a crack in it and isn't safe to keep using. The later keys from the 93-97 era are shaped differently and all I seem able to find on ebay (so far).
