If you overheat your shields go down, which frequently results in you getting hurt. The bar at the bottom of the screen that fills while you shoot is your heat meter.

Anyone been playing co-op and found good class combos? My friend only plays Assassin, so I was letting him have first pick on guns while I got priority on items for Engineer.
