I followed the Star Citizen thread for a while but it’s impossible to keep up with. For a good analogy, imagine a movie doing all its CGI and full rendering first, and spending years on it before starting principal photography. Just a bunch of 3D models in a void.

I loved quite a few of the moments in this movie. I liked Suicide Squad okay, but, Jesus, what a difference a vagina makes. Harley Quinn frequently references psychology in a way that makes you believe that she really could have been a psychologist. The bit with Montoya revealing that the she's a lesbian in a way that's almost completely irrelevant to the situation: The point isn't that she likes women. It's that she's in a room with her Captain, AKA the rear end in a top hat ex-partner who stole credit for her work along with her ex-girlfriend and she's there basically begging favors from them. If this was Ronnie Montaya, straight male detective having to do this, the situation would still be awful and uncomfortable, which was the main point of the scene. The bit with the two guys, Harley and the van. Harley's clearly drunk well past the point of consent, barely even conscious. And Diana really doesn't want trouble, so she's walking away. And in the distance, out of focus, we see the two guys about to put Harley in the van. And Harley is a bad person, who has done bad things and has helped/encouraged the Joker to do other bad things. And you can almost hear Diana telling herself this as she's starting to leave, knowing that Harley is about to get raped while she's passed out drunk. And then she comes back and kicks the living hell out of those guys. Just... God drat, how many women have desperately needed that kind of intervention or basic decency.

So, the stuff in the movie that gets closer to real life experiences - especially women's real life experiences - has a much greater impact than the more over-the-top action/violence stuff.

I saw this today and I thought it was a lot of fun. Solid B. Margot Robbie is pretty much always good, but I also loved Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ewan McGregor. Speaking as someone who isn’t always crazy about comic movies I thought it was an above average comic book movie free of major flaws. I like it better than any Marvel movie I’ve seen since Black Panther. Unlike everyone else in the known universe, I have no opinion on why it’s underperforming.

movie's very good, it's very visually exciting which is one of the most important parts of a superhero movie since they don't tend to take a lot of interesting directions storywise, and all of the characters are very well written and acted (MEW is always finding lots of different shades of what could be very stereotypical "Bad rear end Women" roles that she gets, and her Huntress being totally asocial for her entire life is a fun character) but i would like to take a second to praise the soundtrack, which absolutely slaps, every single track. Black Panther is the standard to which all recent movie soundtracks are being held and while it's not quite as cohesive as BP's (because the person in charge isn't one of the artists but one of the filmmakers) it's got a really great variety of sounds, really sounds like something that the characters in the film would listen to, and a lot of names that are probably going to be way bigger in a year or two (obviously Halsey and Megan Thee Stallion are the big gets but artists like Doja Cat and Saweetie and Summer Walker and two former Fifth Harmony members are all rising stars). It reminds me a lot of another superhero soundtrack that focused on finding artists bubbling under the surface and making an album that diagetically fits into the movie, Into The Spiderverse, and if you're being compared to Spiderverse in any aspect you have done something right.

Man, if this gets released on homevideo as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey instead of Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, I'm going to be upset. I really enjoyed it, Harley raiding the police station was one of the most fun action sequences I've seen in awhile. Really the only thing I didn't like was the big climatic fight being set to Barracuda, mostly because I'm just sick of hearing that song, but also it carries over the worst bit of Suicide Squad in out of place but well known songs. The rest of the music was fine though, I really liked the use of the Halsey song in that sprinkler fight. A great follow up to Suicide Squad, glad this one wasn't chopped and skewed.

Harley picking up a bat in the evidence room fight from a table with a chainsaw and a katana was an amazing reference. Harley Quinn and Mad Max basically fill the same role in that the plot isn't about them. It's great.

I enjoyed the film a lot, to me the only questionable decisions were the mixed timeline in the beginning and the birds of prey costumes in the ending were... not good (dunno if it's even a spoiler). The action scenes had great style. This was so much better than most hero movies, hope we get more Harley and friends in the future.

Just saw. Fucken loved this movie. The script was a little wonky in certain points but everyone on set, the actors, the choreographers, the stunt people, really giving it their all and being passionate made up for it. Favorite bit was Harley snorting the cocaine cloud and going ham on the mercenaries in the police evidence lockup. Margot Robbie is so cool.  Everyone was, really.

I like the designs for the costumes, it's just the execution that falters. It's the one time in the whole movie that it really shows its budget and doesn't manage to punch way over its weight class.

That was probably the movie's biggest missed opportunity. As an ex-cop working as a vigilante in Gotham, I was half expecting her to have the Question mask on at the end. Aw well.
