BIG FLUFFY DOG posted:Unironically what is the difference between Fianna Fael and Fine Gael because even the mainstream news sites can't seem to point to one. How do Irish people decide which one to vote for? Just flip a coin? Fael was the right wing of the anti treaty republicans Gael was pro treaty. Fael started as more a populist organization in fact when are Valera took power in the thirties he did it presenting himself as a borderline left populist.

What are the odds of them actually being able to form a government? Is it possible to form a minority government in Ireland or will they need to partner up with one of the centrist parties?

Weembles posted:What are the odds of them actually being able to form a government? Is it possible to form a minority government in Ireland or will they need to partner up with one of the centrist parties? The seat projections I've seen have SF behind FG and FF despite winning first preferences. If there's to be a minority government, they likely won't be in the best position to lead one. A coalition with smaller parties is their best bet (coalition with either of the big two would be a good way to flush their new support down the toilet) and appears to be what they're going for. Uranium posted:“in a foreign election”? is this the outcome of the iowa caucuses? Ian Paisley is a DUP CHUD in Northern Ireland, where Sinn Fein is also a party and he's basically Baghdad Bobbing the relevance of the Republic of Ireland's elections to Northern Ireland.
