This really reminds me of the Hebrew Sabbath year, every seventh year:
* The land would rest (crop rotation) and what grows naturally must be shared and cannot be sold.
* Debts (of Hebrews) are forgiven, and (Hebrew) slaves / prisoners are freed.

Do we know if there was any similar ‘social reset’ in Scandinavia in these 8-year cycles? It sure seems like that kind of arraignment could really stabilize a society, IMO it would sure help the USA about now.
