I'm convinced that had social media and media frenzy been at 2020 levels for sars and swine flu and what not, there'd have been the same sensationalism and panic then.

England are not all loving Zombies, but a majority aren't socialists and aren't going to be on-board with your ideology anytime soon and no amount of insulting me is going to change that fact, so go ahead and keep advocating for Wales, Northern Ireland, Northern England and Scotland to stay in a toxic relationship I'm sure the decades of uninterrupted neoliberalism and rapacious corporatism will end anytime soon if we just keep fording ahead with the status quo, which is clearly working so well for all of us, the english included, who are bearing the brunt of it.

Ah yes Scotland, the country pulling so hard to break away from the union that it's only natural that the release and recoil will send it hurtling into full left socialism and not at all just into a smaller capitalist shitbin and the arms of every other neoliberal vulture waiting to make bank off permanent austerity.

I don't eat off my floor, lie in it or otherwise touch it much, do have no problem that I wear shoes in the house.

I wear them less than before but I don't see the point of "coming home, shoes off, dog lead on the dog, shoes on, walk dog, shoes off " or "bring in shopping bag, shoes off, put shopping in kitchen, shoes on, go get the next bag of shopping rinse repeat".

lol if you don't bring all your shopping in a single trip

The thing about news is that it's someone telling you stuff and you have no way to respond so it has an air of authority to it, it tricks you into thinking it must be true. Until they hit a topic where you're the authority

This happened with me when I overheard the news reporting that Apple have settled out of court and did not deliberately obsolete/slow down older models but something something to stop them something harmful something. I can't be arsed looking up what their bullshit was verbatim because gently caress Apple, but it's a good example of this thing I didn't know was "a thing".

Not news related but just as jarring for me is when the "tech wizard du jour" does their "thing" in any US TV show

Deep cut right there.

I loved that show, probably because it pissed my mother off who banned it (this was the fate of a lot of cartoons etc in my childhood). It felt deliciously subversive to 8-10yo me.

I don't remember much about it other than I loving loved it as a kid. There's full episodes on YouTube if you fancy some nostalgia

To be clear, I don't believe this is related to COVID, an aussie supermarket had a massive bulk-deal on toilet paper a week or two ago

yeah, why are looroll shortages "by far the most dangerous" aspect of this? or is the idea that they buy all the food and we all starve?

i can see prescriptions or something, but you can't panic buy those

Among many other risks caused by mass panic, one of them is it's a mass gathering of people in close proximity to panic buy.

That video reminds me that I have got this biased view of Britain as a society with a high rate of petty crime. I am not sure if this is a true impression of just a false gut instinct based on the media I consume and what I read on the british forums that I am a member of. Not a lot of serious stuff like murder, but I get the impression street fights are common, as well burglariers and car thefts/break-ins and the like. But maybe it's skewed based on anecdotal evidence.

It happens of course, but probably not at any more or less an alarming rate than anywhere else when taking into account societal and economic influences. Coverage is skewed because whenever it is gang/drug/race/poor place/chav related (or can be spun/lied about to be) the media are all over it and amplifying it like we just found an intelligent signal from space.
