Regarde Aduck posted:I get confused by this. How does anyone in America make money? How does anyone have savings? They typically have a choice of: a) Be born rich b) Rampant nepotism & corruption c) Incredible luck d) All of the above Regarde Aduck posted:If they apply a system like that here, where there is obviously much less disposable income, everyone is going to be permanently in debt. The new 'rich' will be someone that merely has 0 money. That's the idea. A working population living paycheck to paycheck can't afford luxuries like industrial action or time off sick. They're also immediately replaceable by other desperate folks.

Comrade Fakename posted:NES games cost £40 back in the 80s. Games stayed £40 for like, twenty years, and have only been creeping up in the last decade or so. £40 in 1988 was over £100 in today's money. I remember N64 games that cost £50/60 new in the late 90s. Most of them I had to get 2nd-hand some time later.

It's not socialism if government money goes directly to landlord pockets.

Melissa McCarthyism posted:So this 80% wages scheme, I haven't seen any timeframe for when the full details of this move will be published. Will the total grant per employee be based on their gross pay for the last tax year? Or if you were contracted for a set amount of hours, will the payments be equal to 80% of your contracted hours? I'm curious too. Before that announcement my employer was talking about a 4-day week to stave off redundancies, so I'm curious how this scheme will interact with that. Can employers claim when reducing staff hours too?

Arch-twats Mike Ashley and Tim Martin are having a competition tonight to see who gets the guillotine first. The bloated avarice elemental is arguing that sports equipment is essential now that more people can exercise. He should therefore be able to keep all his shops open for the good of the public. Meanwhile Father Jack's uglier brother has decreed that Wetherspoons 37k+ staff won't receive any further pay effective as of the 22nd. Any due bonuses are on hold and they're not paying out anything under the 80% scheme until they recieve the cash from the government. Which is likely weeks away.

Lungboy posted:He should have said that but made zero mention of key sectors or industries. To be honest I'm not sure how you'd do this without leaving a billion loopholes or unintentionally breaking something. Like what if a widget factory is forced to shutdown as it's not obviously a 'key industry', then a month later we find out that those widgets were part of the supply chain to make ventilators or fix ambulances?

It's just the sniffles! Everyone back to work!" Yeah my first thought after reading the news was that coronavirus would be nothing compared to the repeated industrial-grade hangovers de Pfeffel has survived over the years. It'll struggle to survive in a bloodstream with a permanent ABV, and after a week he'll declare that it's "just a flu after all" and push the button to restart the economy while his chums all invest in bodybag production.
