What's the likelihood of this disease, the corona eliminating the old Gammons?

nontrivial - the problem is that with all hospitals choked with casualties and the NHS shuddering to a halt as the staff get sick, you have to ask is it worth trading healthcare for a bunch of people dying prematurely.

staying healthy is pretty important rn

it's a real ideological slight of hand to imply loving weev attended occupy because he was a leftist, then because something something he left and became a nazi. if I'm not mistaken he had a loving swastika tattooed on his chest at that point and had been ostracised from programming communities for being a fuckin nazi.

the actual lesson there - that we need to be vigorous in policing our movements for actual, literal Nazis - one of the reasons occupy wasn't an actual left wing movement, instead liberally demanding no ideological intent - is twisted to prove that we need to police people who are mean because they might transmogrify into Nazis.

mine is i repeat words - i do this all the loving time. if i use an adjective in one sentence, scan the paragraph - i have almost certainly unconsciously repeated it elsewhere.

Not-coronavirus chat:

I watch freesat (nb. NOT FREEVIEW they are different and where I live there are only about 5 channels on freeview).
However, my humax box died the night before I left my old flat. After failed attempts to get a new humax box, I discovered that humax pulled out of freesat in October and all that is available is boxes for around £200.

I have got a Sky HD box and get quite a lot of the freesat channels, but not all. Also, despite it having an ethernet port, I can't connect to the internet and watch catch up via it.

My mother has a Sky HD box and gets more free channels. (When my dad was alive they used to pay for sky, but after he died she didn't want to pay for it anymore - she basically listens to the Archers and watches BBC News obsessively). Anyway, this means she watches free channels via a sky box with the old viewing card in it.

Sometimes I find a channel on my skyhd box and it says 'insert viewing card'. So can I buy a viewing card and see extra free channels? (Not interested in a sky subscription).

Or, can anyone recommend a smart tv for no more than about £150. I'm absolutely not bothered about HD (I can't tell the difference between SD and HD) though I suppose that is standard these days. I do want to be able to connect my internet up to it and watch catch ups!

for my mum she bought just a generic hd tv (you can get them pretty cheap secondhand at like, british heart foundation or similar) and then bought a HDMI stick, specifically a kindle fire one. when you buy a specific smart tv you're bound to that (probably very cheap) hardware in there forever - a separate device lets you upgrade. checking around on hotukdeals i can see this one (https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/philips-32-32pht4203-hd-led-tv-139-delivered-at-electrical-experience-3421660) is about 140, but i'd still pitch a used one.

i bought my current one from my sister cause it had a dead pixel, but it goes away when it warms up.

she doesn't watch regular tv at all now, just netflix and amazon prime and various catchup services. she also doesn't have a tv licence anymore cause she realized this.

I think it's worth highlighting here that nerves are going to get extremely frayed as this goes on, particularly as places like this thread become where people are getting most of their socialization. And that's OK - things are catastrophically, terrifyingly hosed right now. But we should try to be understanding of other posters when they express their anxieties - even when that expression isn't done optimally.

That said the symptoms are 'usually' a dry cough.

Yeah - it's kind of dangerous to rule out covid-19 due to a specific symptom, typically a viral infection occupies the immune system and as such the disease usually comes with an additional bacterial infection. This means that you can get symptoms from all kinds of stuff.

Ash Crimson posted:

I think you're being a tad optimistic about the time scale

counter-intuitively, the virus taking a long time (ie a year or more) is a best case scenario. that's what happens if we really manage to flatten the curve.

we are doing an incredibly poor job of preventing spread, which means we're currently on the path towards doing the opposite by spiking it and ensuring everyone who gets sick does so in a very short period of time. many, many people will die - looking at the current annual fatality rate is really deceiving because it discounts all of the people who survived due to medical intervention - but assuming that the post-infection immunity that is being reported holds the surviving population would be able to return to normalcy much faster.

we can still course correct as it's still manageable with significant intervention but the longer we dawdle the worse it will be.
