I got my start reading our very own Blacksmithing and Metalwork Thread. I bought my equipment mostly off craigslist and later on estate sales. Other than a good 4 1/2" grinder almost everything was bought used. There are a great many superb books on blacksmithing in addition to some really excellent youtube videos. After I'd been doing it about 5 years I moved to an area with a forge guild with it's own dedicated smithy. So now I forge there once a week, which is way more than I was ever able to get time when I had to lug everything in and out of garage.
