Call me a pessimist, but I think I have come to the rough conclusion that the immediate aftermath of World War II was pretty much the last gasp of any major positive movement towards labor in economic reform. Europe just happened to be more ambitious in the reforms it decided to tackle (healthcare, robust public transportation, etc...) and enjoys the fruits of those decisions when it can. Neither continent seems able to recapture that enthusiasm for reform on the institutional level and now they are just stewards of steadily sinking ships. It just happens that Europe might have a few more lifeboats. If I had to name a culprit I would say it is an aging population in both continents unwilling to accept the need for change and so terrified by the concept of immigration of the other (Mexican/Muslim) that they are willing to sink with the ship instead of trying to salvage it.
