I'll bring up Spirit Engine 2. A sidescrolling, technically turn based but basically real time RPG. You are restored to full health at the end of every fight, so the developer can balance almost every fight as if it matters. Each character class has their own way of mitigating damage, from straightforward/dodge tanking to blowing all their actions on shield abilities. Heck your characters even get up during the course of long enough battles, though this also applies to the enemy. An important part of combat is balancing between charging abilities for stronger effects/damage and reacting to what the enemy is doing right now. Probably the most famous feature is that your party has three slots, which can each be filled by one of three unique characters. Each of those 9 characters even have their own journals, though the journals rarely talk about other party members for obvious reasons. The personal plot beats happen at roughly the same time every game, but they are radically different between characters. The sprites look pretty and the main plot isn't bad, even if every shopkeeper feels the need to justify their existence. I will warn that there is only x amount of money in the game, and only y amount of places to sell items. So when offered 2 paths to an objective take both, and don't hold on to too much equipment "just in case". There are 2 sequences with timed battles that will be very annoying to defensively oriented parties. Finally a non-zero number of boss fights and just plain tough fights take place indoors, plan your characters accordingly.
