When's the last time a major sport cancelled their season for something other than a strike or lockout?

The PGA plans to resume the tour in June. I doubt it happens; like baseball's idea of playing games in Arizona, this feels like a contingency plan in case things magically get better. Still, I think this is the first US sport to name a specific date when they'll be back.

MLB stars not thrilled with the Arizona plan:

Mike Trout posted:

"There’s a lot of red flags," Trout said in an interview with NBC Sports. "We want to get back as soon as we can, but obviously it’s got to be realistic. It can’t be sitting in our hotel rooms, just going from the field to the hotel room and not being able to do anything. I think that’s pretty crazy."

One of Trout's greatest concerns with the reported proposal is its impact on the players' families. Trout and his wife Jessica are expecting their first child in August.

"What am I going to do when she goes into labor?" Trout said. "Am I going to quarantine for two weeks after I come back? Cause obviously I can't miss the birth of our first child."

Clayton Kershaw posted:

"I will say that situation, I just don’t see that happening. I’m not going to be away from my family and not seem them for four and a half months. I just talked about how much Cooper changes over one week, so to miss four months of his life right now, I’m just not going to do it.

“And there’s a lot of other things that are just wrong with that proposal. But it’s not to say we can’t go somewhere with it. There’s just a lot of things they’re going to have to figure out before I go quarantine myself with my team for four months.

I can understand how somebody with no family, maybe it’s their first few years, would be OK with any type of baseball being played. I understand that. Just from my personal vantage point, I think there’s something special about Major League Baseball. You start taking away layers of it — whether it be fans in the stands, big stadiums, travel, different things like that — it takes away a little bit of the meaningfulness of the games. I’m all for trying to figure out a solution. I don’t know if I’m in the minority or majority as far as wanting to figure out maybe a little better strategy. I understand the times that we’re in and everybody trying to adapt. All I’ll say is I hope we can come to some type of solution fast, for sure, that I can actually see my family. That’s my only request."

Next summer maybe? Assuming the peak of the pandemic, or second peak or whatever, hits in the fall, then things slowly get better, although not back to "normal", by next spring?

In the past few days, there have been covid outbreaks/cases in college football, baseball, hockey, golf, and boxing. MLB shut down all spring training facilities, which teams had been reopening to small numbers of players. UCLA football players threatened to boycott certain events if the university doesn't provide independent oversight to ensure their safety.
