Now that we find ourselves, or will shortly find ourselves, quarantined to our lovely hovels for the foreseeable future, our corporate overlords have decreed that those of us who are able to continue to being exploited as wage slaves must do so in the interest of Number. This will likely be a new experience for the majority of goons! This is the thread to share your WFH experiences, questions, tips, ways to make it look like you're being productive while you're playing Doom Eternal, advice on how to be absolutely loving sure you're not screensharing before you open a porn tab, etc.

As for myself, I have been working remotely for about 5 1/2 years now. Our entire computer touching team is distributed across multiple timezones and continents. By most metrics we've been successful, insofar as people seem to generally enjoy working here, our turnover is usually pretty low, and our company revenue has grown by an order of magnitude since I started. I am happy to answer whatever questions I can!

Some general, broad tips:

  • Try to have a designated spot for work that is only for work. A separate room is ideal but mostly this is about tricking your brain into going from "home mode" into "work mode". So a certain chair, or spot at a table, whatever is fine.

  • At least at first, try to stick to your normal routine. Get up, shower, get dressed, and "go to work". After a while you can short circuit this but it's good to develop the habit.

  • Take breaks! At an office you can take coffee breaks, take twenty minute shits on company time, "accidentally" take a two hour lunch, etc. You should do this at home too! Do whatever you want, literally anything that's not work. Clean up your filthy abode, play a game, watch some Netflix. No one can be productive for 8 hours uninterrupted.

  • There are two keys to successfully working remotely. First, everyone in the organization must be on board. That means no in person conversations at HQ that don't get communicated back out to the WFH folks, every decision documented in a shared drive, etc. This will actually be a lot easier thanks to coronachan. The second is to overcommunicate everything. Do not assume what people are thinking and ask for clarification without hesitation. Assume positive intent too, because most people are not Extremely Online like goons are and are loving terrible at written tone.

  • At least one external monitor is highly recommended so that you can move Slack over to it and still see incoming messages while you're fragging the legions of Hell on your main display

  • Use Do Not Disturb mode, set working hours, whatever your communication/messaging platform offers, and abide by them. Don't let the fuckers think they can start pinging you at 10pm on a Tuesday and get a reply.

  • Don't eat like poo poo. Yeah there's no longer any social pressure to get a small garden salad lettuce only no dressing for lunch, but slamming six pop tarts down your piehole every day will kill you even if the roni doesn't. Go hit up the cooking thread for ideas Eat your beans.

Good luck out there. Wash your hands.

I'm here for this tangentially. my wife is wfh and I'm about 15% right now as I burn my vacation as slowly as possible.

two kids (one in kindergarten and one in preschool) bouncing around all day so I mostly deal with that while my wife works.

it's been a week and so far I don't know what the loving gently caress

wife & i both work full time from home (btw if you do this you absolutely must have separate offices holy poo poo you will drive each other insane otherwise) and we pulled our 2 year old out of daycare today to eliminate a potential infection vector and also bc we expect daycares will probably be closed by EOW

it's going to be a nightmare, current plan is for wife to take mornings up until 12:30 or so and then i will take afternoons & early evening. at least we can still count on a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon.

they gave me my headset so i can presumably continue to not take phone calls while i'm at home, i guess it's just so my boss can call me and be like sup

this reminds me, one of the most annoying things when people are doing distributed work is poo poo audio. your laptop mic sucks, i'm sorry but u need to accept it. my personal recommendation is to get your employer to expense you one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Jabra-Wirele...bra%2Caps%2C165

i've had mine for the whole time i've been w/ this company and it has not failed me once
