I think they consciously chose to ditch that aspect because no one liked 'vomit zombies', but rooting the protomolecule in the intrinsically horrific repurposing of human biology is an effective way to characterize its danger. Nothing quite dates the first novel to a particular date in nerd consciousness quite like the vomit zombies.

in regards to the action movie comments, Havelock points out that the Chief Engineer is talking like he's in an action movie back in Chapter 40 and how that makes the whole operation a bad idea
