This is a score attack mode, and Rando Schmuck Pilot XP is counted towards your score. Player Character XP is not, presumably because the player character can never actually die, so there's no risk of losing all the time you invested in them.

i had a mission where I just managed to lose all 4 mechs. One arm, one leg. THE REST CTs. IT WAS A 1 SKULL MISSION. Losing a Medium on turn 2 of shooting, and then going downhill from there is NOT ideal.
Also RNG, there are mechs other than Javelins. It is very hard to do anything when there's only 1 part for anything bigger.

I'm mostly asking for those missions where the entire OpForce is 2 light 'Mechs or a bunch of chaff that aren't really a threat except via incidental headshot.

Let’s Play BattleTech: Career Mode – Joppa

Since I didn’t show travel last time, I will this time. We have two options:

Liu’s Memory, and Joppa. Liu’s Memory is a two skull ice world with the Battlefield flag. IIRC, battlefield usually means more ‘Mech parts in the shop. There are travel contracts to Liu’s Memory, which means we can travel here without it costing us money as long as we do a mission right when we arrive, but I’m not confident in taking on a two skull planet with just our starter ‘Mechs. I’d like one more good medium first. A Hunchback, Centurion, or Griffin would be ideal but I’d gladly take a Wolverine or Shadow Hawk.

Our other option is Joppa. Joppa is an airless moon (read: sucks to fight on) but it’s only a one skull planet and it has one advantage no planet we’ve visited so far has had. Joppa is a black market world. The black market is only available after we’re offered membership, but it’s absolutely worthwhile to join. Joining costs anywhere from 10,000 c-bills (if the pirates really like you) to over a million if they hate your guts; and you’ll only receive the offer to join the black market if you spend time at, traveling to, or traveling from a black market world. We have enough money to join the market if they offer, so I decide Joppa is our next stop. Getting black market access early would be really nice.

On the way to Joppa, I have Dr. Murad start work on the Argo’s full liquor bar lounge, which will generate some passive morale for us.

I’ve just had to chase another card game out of the mess hall so the staff could clean up, Commander. The crew needs somewhere to relax that isn’t also where we’re trying to serve meals.

On the way to Joppa, we also get a bad event.

Ordering Venom to stand down will make her sad but probably have no other lasting consequences. Waiting to see how it resolves could lead to one or both Mechwarriors getting injured so gently caress that. If we had a Dave & Busters the training pods I could send them to duke it out in the simulator, which has a good chance of one getting high spirits and the other low or both getting high spirits because they forgot whatever they were arguing about. Because we don’t have the simulators (they’re a waste outside of this event) I order Venom to stand down.

She gets sulky for a month but I don’t give a poo poo, she’s not my primary called shot maker.

The lounge is so quick to build that Dr. Murad finishes it before we reach Joppa. I start her working on the simulator pods. In my experience, this event is pretty common. The simulators generate 20 experience a day for any ‘Mechwarrior with under 10,000 total experience. The only one on the ship right now who can earn any experience from the simulator is JSON and we only accrue experience while the clock is running which is something I avoid doing wherever possible, but at 90,000 c-bills and 10 days to complete the first upgrade isn’t so expensive that I hate having it. Level 2 and Level 3 simulators are much more expensive and also have experience caps so rather than just being vaguely grumpy at the necessity I actually genuinely hate getting them.

There’s nothing of any real interest in Joppa’s shop, just some Orion parts and components for the Urbanmecn R60, which carries an AC/20. We don’t get an offer to join the black market on the way in so I can’t see what sorts of wonderful goodies the pirates have in stock.

Most of the missions here aren’t great. They’re either escorts or attack/defend and we’re a little slow for the first and nowhere near tough enough for the second. There is one battle and two base captures, so I’ll do those and see if we get any good travel contracts.

I meant to upgrade the Urbanmech on the way to Joppa but I totally forgot.

Joppa Missions

We’re planning an operation and to pull it off, we need the local government authorities to be temporarily distracted. We need you to create that distraction. We’ll point you at a local government patrol. You do something loud and fatal to them. Meanwhile, we execute our operation and give you a cut of the proceeds. Oh, and there may be reinforcements. That’s good; that’s one less lance to get in our way.

I really like ‘loud and fatal’ as a job description, Commander. I may get it put on a plaque.

They’re offering a lot of salvage on this one

… But I go with neutral sliders. This is a one skull planet, three salvage is probably excessive. I’m probably going to regret not gunning for more cash.

Joppa 1: Distraction (Commentary)

After-Action Report:
Battle Record To Date (Victory/Loss/Draw): 8/0/0

OpForce Casualties:
1 Griffin, 2 Locusts, 1 Jenner, 1 Galeon tank, 1 Striker tank

Allied Casualties:
Thoth 18 days injured

Rewards & Chosen Salvage:
I forgot to screencap how much money we made but it was about 350k, GRF-1N parts, 2x JR7-D parts

Good Random Salvage Received:
JR7-D parts, LCT-1E parts, LCT-1M parts

MechWarrior Stat Ups:
Venom: Piloting 6 (+1 hit defense, +3 melee hit defense). Piloting 6 is really good for her survivability.

We need a fresh body because Thoth ate an injury early. Most everyone in Joppa’s hiring hall has lovely stats so I hire Venture because he starts with bulwark. Despite being a criminal, Venture doesn’t have the ‘Unstable’ tag so this was a good pick up. Criminals can sometimes trigger interesting events. The only other pilot here worth considering is Peanut Butter but Venture was cheaper in spite of already being at Guts 7. Rank 2 skills are easy to train up.

We’ve located the secure facility where the Magistracy of Canopus stores its payroll before distributing it to local forces. We believe we could put that payroll to better use. We’d like you to hit the facility and steal the payroll. It will be well-defended, and there is a bonus if you eliminate all the defenders.

Personally, I’m not above simple robbery to pay the bills, Commander.

Joppa 2: Payroll Seizure (No Commentary)

After-Action Report:
Battle Record To Date (Victory/Loss/Draw): 9/0/0

OpForce Casualties:
1 Javelin, 1 Commando

Allied Casualties:
My respect for 1.5 skull missions

Rewards & Chosen Salvage:
257,125 c-bills, COM-1B parts, JVN-10A parts

Good Random Salvage Received:
We got everything else too. One large laser and 2 jump jets, woo! We would’ve salvaged everything on a 1/5 salvage contract. :toot:

MechWarrior Stat Ups:
Venture: Gunnery 4, Piloting 3 (4/3/7/2). This gets him up to speed nicely, he’ll make a good addition to the B team and I gave him the Brooklyn accent so he sounds like a 30 year old Joey Wheeler.

One of our VIPs is in a Capellan facility on Joppa. We need to get her offworld, but the building is surrounded by local government forces. You will sweep aside the opposition, recover our VIP, and transport her to a designated landing zone for extraction. Be prepared for the opposition - the local government units surrounding the embassy won’t let you extract our personnel without a fight. Payment will be issued when you deliver our VIP alive and in one piece.

I like Marina Liao. As quest givers go, she’s no-nonsense. She will absolutely ask us to do some horrendous things but she’s one of the only quest givers who will share the moral burden for those decisions with us rather than throwing us under the bus for making them.

The enemy has to be expecting an attempt to break their siege, so there will be significant resistance.

Yeah, I doubt that.

Joppa 3: Embassy Extraction (No Video)

After-Action Report:
This mission shares the same map as Payroll Seizure but took almost two whole minutes longer to complete!

Battle Record To Date (Victory/Loss/Draw): 10/0/0

OpForce Casualties:
2 Commandos, 1 Locust, 1 Spider

Allied Casualties:
My patience for missions on Joppa, time to GTFO

Rewards & Chosen Salvage:
187,000 c-bills, SDR-5V parts

Good Random Salvage Received:
3x COM-1B parts

We immediately sell this for 215,040 c-bills. The game gives you the option to scrap any ‘Mech you complete for c-bills, but as a general rule you can get slightly more money selling them. I reserve scrapping for emergency cash influxes if my funds get exhausted by an event mid-transit and I need money to make payroll. With luck, that won’t happen this run.

Checking where we can go next, there’s a travel contract to Alloway which is another 1.5 skull planet with a black market (which means the time we spend traveling out of Joppa and the time we spend traveling in to Alloway could trigger the event that gives us black market access!) and a much better local biome.

I check the travel contracts and Oooooh a two skull Assassination? We’re doing this.

Most missions secretly vary their difficulty a little. Most of the time the skull rating is fairly accurate, but some missions can be easier than expected by a skull (like we saw on Joppa) while others can be harder by up to a skull. Assassination missions are never easier than their skull rating indicates so we should be in for a fun time!

Next Time: Beat the Black Knight!

Edit: I finally decided what I wanted to do for Local Government vs. Pirate, since they use the same talking head. I helpfully photoshopped an eyepatch onto the pirate!

I'd really love another good medium. The Enforcer is solid but it's rapidly outclassed, I'd love to replace it with a Hunchback, Griffin, or Centurion but I'd take a Shadow Hawk or a Wolverine instead. As much as I love it we do need to phase out the UrbanMech sooner rather than later.

Everything else really depends on what we find in the shops, and whether or not we get black market access.
