To clarify this one, because I think you're sort of misunderstanding what someone means when they say this, this is more referring to those people who, sure, nominally hate fascism and fascist tendencies more, and maybe they do, but they sure speak out a whole lot more often against the socialists they supposedly aren't that heavily in disagreement with.

So, 'more' as in 'more often', not as in 'harder'. You actually see it a whole lot in Australian politics, where it seems like a sect of the center-left Labor party and their supporters pull the knives out about the further-left Greens a whole lot more readily than they do against the parties that actually oppose them.

As far as I'm aware, 5G's main use case as a wireless spectrum is for a bunch of IoT and smart home stuff, which I think we were better off without. For everything else, it's not really useful enough to implement over already-existing technologies. But I can't even research that fact to confirm it, let alone say anything about it in good conscience, because the main anti-5G arguments are this kind of nonsense.

Outing myself and generating thread content, but I've always felt the whole 'Karen' thing was more than a bit misogynistic. I'm not sure that I'd agree that it had class connotations though.

I mean, I do, because the collective image of 'a Karen' as I've understood it is definitely upper-class, or upper-middle at its lowest. 'Karen' describes that sort of older woman who never really seems happy about anything and is always super judgemental of others they see as 'below' them. It's 'I need to speak to your manager' with a larger purview, they're also the moms who give teachers hell and the people who apparently aren't racist but are very scared of black youths. It's definitely an image that I associate with a certain social class.

I suppose there's a sexist element, too, because it is really levelled at women, but I think it's because while that sort of person does exist among men, it manifests very differently.

I'm okay with Conner, because Colton sounds too unique and Cody sounds too young.

A male Karen equivalent, I think, has to be a name you could find multiple people having at a golf or sailing club.

EDIT: a lot of people in the replies saying 'Chad', which would be perfect if the incels hadn't gotten to it first. Chad definitely fights with coaches at their kid's Little League matches and then goes to play golf.

From what I gather, that latter person would be a Becky. So like, Karen's just generally a super-privileged white woman who looks down on everyone, but Becky specifically attacks black people minding their own business.

I might have this entirely wrong, though, because I'm not even American.

I haven't played the FF7 remake (and have no real intention to because I have very strong and nerd-rear end opinions about the fact they shouldn't have made it), but I'm gonna say that OP's probably got a very legitimate complaint going on there. Barrett's always been basically 'late 90s Japan's attempt to write a black guy from a 70s action franchise', I'm really not surprised to hear that they weren't able to excise that. Especially since it looked like the black guy they're basing him on to still be one that's several decades out of date.

FF7's remake and Doom Eternal are basically tag-teaming the role of 'big new pop culture thing you're not allowed to criticize' right now. It's kinda fascinating how you get two entirely different types of angry nerd depending on which one you speak out against.

Oh, it's not even that Doom Eternal is doing anything egregiously wrong or anything. It's just that the internet's in that state right now where if you have a problem with Doom Eternal then the response is a disproportionate 'how DARE YOU'. In kinda the same way as how for a decent stretch of last year you couldn't say anything negative about Avengers Endgame.

I just think it's really interesting how Doom's fans are really performatively Mad if you speak against their game, while the FF7 remake's fans are very performatively Not Mad if you do the same with theirs.

But making GBS threads on Tumblr as a community is just kinda old hat at this point, they've always proven to be generally harmless people, usually with their heart in the right place even if they're idiots. We have all learned very, very, VERY well at this point that their kind of social media idiocy was far from the worst kind, and the fact that the 'ridiculing idiots' corner of the internet kinda gave it both barrels probably wasn't a good angle in retrospect, when certain other social media idiots around at the time proved to be far worse.

MageMage posted:

Do they really call it "queer" studies? Why would any academic institution reclaim a slur like that?

Very quick rundown on this one as I understand it, as someone super involved with queer activism and politics rather than academics:

A: It has been more or less successfully reclaimed. These days the complaints about using the term are less 'it's offensive' and more 'I don't personally associate with the modern political connotations of the word'. Since queer studies/politics inherently have the same political charge that the term 'queer' has in the modern day, it's not too bad in these contexts, but talking about an individual who might just be trying to live their life and happens to be gay, you might not use it there.

B: There's not actually a better term for the general umbrella. You'll see a bunch of different permutations of the acronym depending on who you're talking to, and both who they consider to be part of the community or what they're specifically referring to; personally people I associate with generally use 'LGBTIQ+', because I'm involved in politics so there's a lot of interlocking issues to talk about, but also sometimes an 'A' jumps in there for any number of reasons. So when you're talking about the whole sphere, and again, specifically in the political environments that you'd refer to as 'queer', there's basically no bettter option than just going with 'queer'.

That might, and probably will, change over time! But that's what it is now.

Whenever I see Australian responses like this around a mostly American (or British, or Canadian) context, I'm always struck by how much more vicious they sound. I don't think it's because it's coming from a place of greater hate than it is in other countries, but the Australian culture feels so much more permissive of more hateful and violent language. It's weird, because I don't really think it's reflected in actions.

It's weird to have this come up around tone arguments, because FUUUUUUUUCK does the average Australian lose a normal tone argument... and yet, yeah, like you said, the same stuff applies.
