I've just updated my post on the first page with the April Solidarity Fund update. Details of how to donate to the fund or apply for assistance are at the end of the OP. Guavanaut, possibly worth adding the email address to the list of ways to apply?Maugrim posted:UKMT Solidarity Fund Monthly Update - April 2020

Isomermaid posted:Don't take this as a claim to precarity, cos I know a lot of people have it harder and we'll do OK eventually I guess but I have to vent. Took a mortgage holiday and they've taken the bastard payment anyway. There goes a huge chunk of the budget, right there. So we're scrambling round to work out how to cover things and hoping they fix their fuckup. Apply to the Solidarity Fund. If you get the payment holiday in the end you can always donate back what you claimed!

ThomasPaine posted:It can also work but just be pretty poo poo at its job. One of my best pals told me a while back that she had to have heart surgery as a kid because she was born with some issue that meant there was a hole between two of the ventricles. Had to get something put in I think but she's as healthy as any other 30 year old afaik now. My daughter being under a year old and needing similar heart surgery is why we're on the vulnerable people list. I'm hoping the bcg injection she had at birth (plus being a kid in general) provides her with some defence as was briefly reported a while ago

Ms Adequate posted:Out of curiosity, would the people running the UKMT hardship fund consider something like seb's situation an appropriate thing to ask for help with? I think I must have missed a post while catching up as I don't know Seb's situation, but we will absolutely consider all requests. We've already helped a goon cover rent this month in fact! By way of a mini-update, we're currently making initial enquiries about setting up the final multi-signatory bank account, so that people who are waiting to set up standing orders can do so. That process is likely to take a few weeks though, especially right now. In the mean time we still have over 3k banked from the opening surge. E: just read back and see Seb's issue, which has reminded me: this probably isn't any use to a southerner like Seb, but a goon based in the south Manchester area has offered two PCs up to goons in need: Verizian posted:I've got two old PC's that I need to clear out for room. If interested I suggest pinging Verizian in the Solidarity Fund channel on the Discord (pm etc will also work, but this way would help us track what's been claimed, if anything) Maugrim fucked around with this message at 09:58 on Apr 8, 2020 |

The pandemic is definitely well tailored to get at least a few people asking questions like "what exactly is 'the economy' and why is it so important that it keeps growing"

Fossilised fish-hooks, I can't believe you'd admit to that! OwlFancier posted:I have vague memories of reading a bunch of famous five stuff when I was very young but I can't remember any of the content. I did read a lot of Redwall too and that was a good series. Also has communist shrews. Best thing about Redwall was the food porn imo RockyB posted:I still have a soft spot for Swallows and Amazons. Ooh yes my dad made me read Swallows and Amazons as a kid and I devoured the entire series. Would still read today. I guess I just read whatever came within reach as a kid. Hardy Boys (my English teacher used to scowl when he caught me with this trash instead of Thomas Hardy). Duncton Wood! Amazing stuff. E: my mum gave me a copy of Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel. I found the sequels later in my grandmother's bookshelf and holy poo poo they're basically porn after a point. Maugrim fucked around with this message at 08:46 on Apr 10, 2020 |

I guarantee most of the nation did and even as someone aware of the staggering hypocrisy of it I have to admit it was pretty powerful. Are brave NHS! You have to give things like these time to fade in the public consciousness before the bigger picture comes into view. That's why popular opinion typically starts to drop off sharply once these crises are actually over.

I'm drinking about the same as I did before lock down, i.e. maybe a double of something tasty with the wife once a month when the kids have given us a particularly rough day. Comfort eating is more my thing.

Overminty posted:It's this, wanna live somewhere with a dishwasher so much. For those who have posted this - you can get little tabletop dishwashers and a lot of them can just be hooked up to the sink rather than plumbed in, if like me you live in a rental with a poky little kitchen and an arse of a landlord. It took me 5 years of handwashing everything to find this out (loving baby bottles nearly broke me). The space taken up by the dishwasher is more than made up for by not having dirty/just washed dishes cluttering the surfaces.

Coohoolin posted:Omg such a thing exists?? Please tell me more! How expensive are they? What model should I get? You're looking at £150-350 probably? This is the model we ended up getting and we're pretty pleased with it - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153660910002 Size ratings are by number of place settings - this one is 8 place settings which is about as big as tabletops go, but if you don't have kids (and/or don't have the space) you'll surely be fine with a 4 or 6 Obviously measure the area first and factor in a couple of inches at the back to run the pipe. Ours takes up the entire square of worktop next to the cooker and overlaps the draining board a bit but we reckoned it would just about work, and indeed it does. We also ended up springing quite a bit of cash to get it properly plumbed in because our taps are a stupid shape and really hard to attach the hose to.

goddamnedtwisto posted:As long as they have a detachable aerator (i.e. basically any sold in the last 20 years or so - check for a couple of flats on them that you can fit a spanner on to unscrew them) Yeahhh... So... behold our kitchen taps This place has been let continuously for probably 25 years now and lol if you think our landlord has done any renovations he didn't absolutely have to in that time. E: you will notice the sink overflow has been blocked with sealant. We did this ourselves a few years ago, after discovering that it was not overflowing to anywhere; the water was pouring straight into the cupboard under the sink. This has been a typical experience in our house Maugrim fucked around with this message at 22:02 on Apr 20, 2020 |

Another pet theory being posited repeatedly by this guy is that BAME populations may be more prone to vitamin D deficiency - which has apparently been demonstrated in various studies to make people more susceptible to complications from respiratory illness - as darker skin makes vitamin D less efficiently in sunlight.
