https://twitter.com/michaeljswalker/status/1245488347155398657?s=11 So, there's always a lot of talk about how Kuenssberg and Peston are useful idiots: jumped-up gossip journalists continually duped by the messages drip-fed to them by their politician contacts. But is that really the case? I'm more cynical. They most know what they're doing, know what their role is. There's a lot more conscious thought going on than them just being unwilling stooges of the establishment. They know precisely that they have the opposite opinion than a few weeks ago, that their job is to sell the government's actions to the public. Their 'cogs were turning' all along. e: Dan Hodges, meanwhile, very much is a useful idiot: https://twitter.com/DPJHodges/status/1245472822857740289

I can see why many within Labour think they need a move towards the centre to chase that elusive concept known as 'electability' (I think they're very wrong, but I can see why they think that). However, it blows my mind that, after the election we've just had, and the clear reason why the defeat was so heavy (Brexit, obvs), they think the #1 figurehead for Remain is the person to do it. I'd predict that Starmer will get beaten worse than Miliband in an election for that reason alone. Especially if he cuts out the left as many are supposing. The only other option is to 'win' by doing everything the right-wing of this country want him to do, in which case what's the point of winning at all? Also, why do these people think he's such an attractive, suave operator? On Marr he's got the same overfed puce features as most gammons, and his voice is so bland it's hard to listen to for any extended length of time.

What a story arc this guy's had over the past twenty years. Spent years biding his time to get to the top, achieving everything he'd always wanted, only to be ruined by the long-sown consequences of his own actions. Ending feels a bit rushed though

We can only really pay attention to what happens in countries that are starting to open up a bit, and take a cue from that. Notwithstanding the Tories being evil and/or incompetent: you test, you isolate, you have an adequately resourced healthcare system, and you provide means of helping people through the economic fallout. That the Tories are ideologically opposed to all of those things is the only reason we're so hosed.

Starmer is on Sky News right now, and I'm sorry but he's absolutely loving useless. The presenter is spoon feeding him an opportunity to critique thr government but he won't be drawn on it, instead talking about 'not being party politicial, not opposition for opposition's sake'. Now he's being pressed on what Labour's actual strategy is and he's totally floundering. We're right back to Miliband and the Labour offer being 'Tories, but half-hearted and incompetent'

So I think I'm gonna cancel my membership of Labour, and possibly Unison, and put the money into joining the IWW instead. A good idea? Do they do much useful stuff? They seem pretty sound, but I'm quite new to Actually Doing Stuff beyond voting in whatever ballot papers that happen come through my door.

ThomasPaine posted:Ditch Unison, think very hard before ditching Labour. The PLP and bureaucracy may be awful but it is still one of the biggest and most effective spaces for left-wing organising in the UK, and short of some serious political upheaval will remain so. You're going to be able to do a lot more working with groups like Momentum than you are outside the party (though that's not to say don't also join the IWW and other groups). If you leave, you hand victory to the enemy unless you have a viable national-level power structure outside the party, which as far as I can see does not exist in the UK at present. Fair play, thanks all. Maybe I'll just stick with the current arrangement and actually pull my finger out when this is over.
