I’m not sure what your background is (so forgive me if you know this already) but usually EMS resus discontinuation protocols require medical arrests be transported if they’re in public view, even if discontinuation is indicated. This is just a suspension of this bit.

PD is usually responsible for bodies in private homes and this just extends it to public places.

Arsenic Lupin posted:

Huh. To avoid traumatizing spectators, or because they don't want to wait around for the police to show up to pick up a corpse?

LeeMajors posted:

Nah, has nothing to do with cops—they are responding to every cardiac arrest regardless of etiology.

It’s generally about preserving modesty of the dead and medical arrests are generally unlikely to require investigation. Traffic deaths, GSWs and other traumatic causes are generally left in place unless there is a medical need to transport.

So this one appears to be more of the streamlining type of action, rather than allowing people to outright die if the paramedics can't fix it on-site. It might get there soon, but not yet!

This may be, oddly, the science working. It's pretty clear that there's a loving ton that we don't know about COVID-19, primarily because of the asymptomatic carrier issue. We also don't know why some people with COVID-19 feel nothing, others get a cold, others get the fever/shakes/chest stuff, others need hospitalization/oxygen, and others need the full-blown ventilator. I'm only now seeing conjectures as it having to do with the initial viral load in the initial exposure event.

Now that a sizable chunk of research has been done on asymptomatic carriers, and they turn out to be more cases than expected, the guidelines changed. That's good!

But, it's not exactly helpful that drat near everyone in the administration was all "ENJOY YOUR JOBS AND THE GOOD ECONOMY, THIS IS NBD" until it suddenly wasn't. Nor is it helpful that decisions are being made in respect to our culture, instead of just a person, at a podium, saying what the straight science is. You're wrong about this bit, but otherwise, yep.

The federal stockpile is operating as normal and it's direct federal-to-state transfers, no companies involved, but it's basically out. The trouble is that the feds (Donnie) can't figure out if they want to nationalize all of the replenishment requirements, or half-rear end it. So, states are bidding against states bidding against the feds, high bid wins until the poo poo gets delivered.

Donnie's trying to avoid the responsibility for the shortages, but his people are still Doing Things and buying/sending poo poo to the high-population states (or, red states!), so the low-priority states are literally working AROUND the feds to get their poo poo in secret.

There are somewhat early signs that New York is hitting their peak earlier than expected, with a lower peak than expected.

Deaths are the most lagging indicator, the current best indicator for where things actually are involve new hospitalizations and new ICU admissions. Both are significantly down in the past few days. Hospitalizations/ICU admissions are also lagging indicators, tracking back to how successful the mitigation actions were 2-3 weeks ago. There's significant evidence that social distancing is working and a lot of models are getting more optimistic.

Bonus points if you have a link so I can learn more.

Here's information on the IHME model out of the University of Washington that has been driving some talk: http://www.healthdata.org/covid/faqs

Another on how localities are partnering with universities to make their own models, with different assumptions, and why DC thinks the IHME model is bad: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/coronavirus-peak-dc-maryland-virginia/2020/04/03/0636bc6c-75cf-11ea-87da-77a8136c1a6d_story.html

The trouble is that there's so much we don't know, and no federal government model/standard, and each model is based on assumptions, so localities are pulling from a gazillion different sources. We're so far behind that contact tracing really isn't A Thing in the hotspots.

Note this is extremely situationally dependent, and what the paper describes is most relevant for describing the early outbreak in China and not necessarily the behavior in other areas. For example, the authors state: "Among many factors, the lack of awareness of this new pathogen and the Lunar New Year travel and gathering in early and mid-January 2020 might or might not play a role in the high R0." If you looked at the R0 based solely on that woman in South Korea that infected multiple churches, the R0 would be 1,000.

Yeah this is the big question and why that study has such a wide R0 confidence interval. The Chinese data is bad because of their rampant lying (though the propaganda likely didn't start before this data came in) and nobody knowing what this thing was to start with. I'm really curious as to what ours will be, even though our data is bad due to poo poo testing (which is getting better!).
