Godholio posted:537 votes in Florida decided the 2000 election. Those votes WILL NOT put a third party in office, but they might keep Trump in office. Do you see the difference here? The Republicans don't worry about their vote being split anymore...it cost them the elections in the 90s and they loving learned. Who said anything about putting third parties in office? Who said anything about revolution? Who the hell are you even arguing with?

Voting for Biden is not worthwhile. And I'm happy to not be doing it. Honestly, I hope that a third (maybe even a fourth!) can push their way into our system. Currently it seems like what we have right now is just one pro-war, pro-wall street party.

Just so we're crystal clear on this: I don't think that Donald Trump should be voted for under any circumstance, even if his opponent was worse than him. This isn't some crazy bad faith gotcha question. If you truly believe that Trump is an existential threat, then you shouldn't be willing to vote for him at all, even if he was hypothetically the lesser of two evils. You are not obligated to continue participating in an obviously broken system. And just so we're clear on this too: there's a whole lot of room for possible actions between "vote" and "violent revolution".

you dont enact change, or even slightly slow down all the horrific poo poo the country does on a daily basis, by continually supporting the people who spent their careers making it happen.
|
# ? Oct 20, 2020 23:26 |

Nope. Which is why the downticket races matter. The only way to revive a party is to flood its seats with the people you want there. You're not going to enact change from the top down.

nwin posted:So is the basic consensus here that people would rather have Trump another 4 years and hopefully send the Democrats a message to say “do better than biden” next time? nwin posted:So, I mean we’re just kind of hosed either way. Trump sucks and is an idiot, but at least stocks somehow keep going up so I’m kinda happy with my TSP account. Plus he’s republican so my military paycheck isn’t going to take a hit so that’s cool, promotions will probably keep up fairly well. But long-term the dude don’t give a gently caress about climate change and if another conservative joins the Supreme Court when RBG dies we’re kinda hosed there. I love catching up on threads and coming across things like this. Beware, folks. This can be considered an “identifying mark” and spoil the ballot.

Watch as people like Buttigieg or Bloomberg mysteriously end up in these roles instead.

pantslesswithwolves posted:~most progressive campaign in history~ I'd be really surprised if Bernie even accepted a Cabinet level position. Maybe Warner, but I think both are more influential outside of the Cabinet and can say whatever they want versus working under him. Perhaps getting some folks from the House would be a good idea. Oh, reading the article, its all about trying to maintain dem seats in the Senate.

pulling good senators out of their seats for cabinet positions is dumb though
|
# ? Nov 2, 2020 15:28 |

Plucking sitting elected officials for the cabinet backfired pretty badly for the Obama administration and the Trump administration, so it's honestly a pretty defensible call. Plus, even if Sanders wanted to be Secretary of Labor, he'll be head of the Budget Committee should the Dems manage to flip the Senate, and that's a pretty hefty consolation prize.

It's very funny if Elizabeth Warren ever thought she'd get anything in exchange for helping hand the election to the guy she got in politics to oppose.

It would be a good way to get someone like, say, Diane Feinstein out of the Senate before her term is up and into some functionally useless cabinet position. No way in hell that would happen of course.

Why put a far left radical like Feinstein in the admin? With Trump behind us, it's time to reach across the aisle and demonstrate a commitment to bipartisanship.

As much as I doubt they actually will do anything with it, it's a sign that they actually want a congressional majority, so that's something at least.
