hahah, one that gets overused by some specific writers is "to be sure"

Stephen Kotkin for instance says it constantly

"To be sure" is one of my favorite red flag phrases that show the author knows they're full of poo poo. I'm not sure if Megan McArdle uses it often but it seems like it would be right up her alley

"Perform." We already have the word act, which is an exact synonym. Like "perform masculinity" vs. "act masculine." The second has the same meaning but it way less pretentious

This is a bad opinion. Masculinity is a noun and masculine is an adjective. They do not mean the same thing.

That's like saying "show that you're clever" is different from "demonstrate your cleverness." They're different forms of the same word

Act and perform aren’t universally interchangeable. An overbearing parent might tell their kid to “act like a man” but they’d never say “perform masculinity.” “He was acting strangely” isn’t replaceable with “he was performing strangely.”

Saying someone is performing a behavior draws attention to the fact that the performance is the point. “Acting” is used is a much looser way, often akin to “behaving.”

This phrase and all the associated sentiments that want to delete pretty common English words whenever they're even marginally redundant out of some STEMlord vision of "streamlining" natural language DEFINITELY falls into "overused poo poo"

On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.

I've been seeing a lot of people on Twitter ALL-CAPS words for emotional EMPHASIS especially when dealing with emotional topics like POLICE BRUTALITY or the covid PANDEMIC on the NAVAJO land and I hate it so much that it makes me have a split-second where I DISAGREE with Tweets that I would AGREE with and find SENSIBLE and CORRECT if they weren't typed like a grandma having a SEIZURE with an E-MAIL FORWARD.

“radicalized” when it comes to politics like democratic socialism. having an 81 year old dad who has been a democratic socialist my whole life might make me biased but it’s just being reasonable, not especially radical at all.

did I already say that? I’m old and forgetful
